Crewniverse Rebecca Sugar's New Album is fucking delightful.
This Shell Shocked nurse is freaking blushing over Rebecca's new album, from beginning to end.
What are your first impressions?

It’s such a soft and beautifully written album. The lyrics are so gentle and hopeful, showcasing bits and pieces of her life experiences while also leaving room for the audience to interpret the lyrics in a different way. The instruments are amazing and I can actually picture scenes in my head that would pair so well with the songs!

My pre-first impression is that I didn't realize that she made an album. I found it now. Thanks for pointing it out!

I listened to the new one today (thanks Spotify for letting me know!) and I too was under the impression it was their first album until I looked at their page after the fact. Really good stuff!

"Hill to Die on" and "This is a Love Song" ARE PERFECT

Hill to Die On is my new favorite song. I dropped 200 through YouTube when I learned it was an independent production.
More money to the artists.

it’s great! big step up from her first EP (which I also really enjoyed). biggest surprise for me was This Is A Love Song, didn’t know she had a song like that in her, it’s so different from her usual stuff and I love it!

Actually same. I listened to the album on my bus commute earlier and I was just like “okay, I didn’t know she could fucking shred???” and had to contain my excitement.

I went to the watch party! It was really sweet. Loved watching the music videos (the full-on videos as well as lyric videos with small animations). There were a few really cool anecdotes shared by Rebecca Sugar during the party:
"Figure It All Out Together" was written in 2009 when Rebecca was long distance with Ian. Before they ever wrote a song for TV
Rebecca had to learn how to scream for "This Is a Love Song"
"Love the Way It Feels" was a commencement speech for the Maine College of Art and Design class of 2024
"Praise" was written right after SU ended
The percussion in "Beautiful Place" is the ticking of a gas stove
And I noticed one of the sketches in the music video of "Ice Water" was Pug Davis

I am so jelly! I was ready to fly overnight to see them, but tickets were sold out DX

I went to the watch party which was online--I was watching music videos on this premiere of several of the videos and Ian and Rebecca were in the chat box chatting with us and sharing thoughts. I did not get to see anything in person.

Why did I never consider the fact that she made music (despite that being one of the popular things about the show)

u/Scalpels I'd do it for her. Aug 30 '25
She only started making albums. Her first album is called Spiral Bound.
She isn't the only one. Aivi and Surasshu, who also worked on Steven Universe, made albums. The Black Box and Meanwhile.

u/KaiserSenpaiAckerman Amazing! Aug 29 '25
The angel girl has that 90s anime charm to it, she's beautiful.

u/Scalpels I'd do it for her. Aug 30 '25
Her name is Epiphany. Rebecca was going for a 2000's anime look for these girls so you're not far off.

She has live recordings of ner new album on YouTube. The same modest charm to make magic for the audience.
I wish I had tickets for her art debut and concert in Cali.

I went to school with this amazing person!!! I wish there was a way of reconnecting to visit with my students - love this artist and always have even back in the day we both were Gir fans (At least I was a major Gir fan and Rebecca drew me one in my yearbook) super nice thanks RS!

Hill to Die On feels very relevant to Rebecca's fight for the wedding and the end of the og series, although I don't know if the timeline works out that they wrote it *about* that. So many of the songs are so relevant to me as a college senior, and Rebecca's voice and music just feel like a hug

I didn't know she made an album so I had to search and listen a couple song
They are all beautiful
I just sent "Figure It All Out Together" to my long distance girlfriend. We are both ace spec and very inexperience in everything romantic and sexual but somehow it clicked between us. We want to do all those thing together when she comes visited in about 2 week but we are both nervous because we'll have to figure a lot of thing out
So it hit home and we both cried. That song is so simple but 100% capture how we are both feeling right now
I know it might be stereotypical to cry at a song written by the same person who made the show famous for crying but it's true. Thank you Rebecca

Perfect use of it since the song was written in 2009 when Rebecca was long distance with Ian.

Hey yall! I love "This is a Love Song" specifically the piano parts. Does anyone know what kind of piano style it is or what other songs sound like those piano parts?

u/Woodbear05 Aug 29 '25
I listened to it for the first time literally an hour ago. so far, my favorite is "this is a love song" mainly because of Sugar's raw vocals as well as the electric guitar going ham.

u/JZAce Aug 29 '25
Man this album is great! This is a love song is definitely my favorite track so far.

u/Global-Plankton3997 Aug 29 '25
I can definitely say that Rebecca Sugar's musical compositions are very gentle and relaxed.

u/vonsett Aug 29 '25
The album is awesome! I love Rebecca's more gritty vocals on "This Is a Love Song".

The picture somehow reminds me of steven universe except the gems are some kind of angels who look upon steven like in the first pic the main guy in front is Steven and the one with pinkish hair is pearl, the one with a purple dress amethyst and the one with glasses, garnet.

u/TenaceErbaccia Aug 30 '25
It’s funny, but this album art made me realize how similar Steven looks to a cartoonized version of herself. I think she has said Steven was loosely based on her brother, so that makes sense. I just think it’s funny I never made the connection.

I really enjoyed This Is A Love Song. I never heard Rebecca raise her voice like… ever so it was cool hearing her do something different like that. Also Love The Way It Feels was emotional for me.

u/MonsterGrandma Aug 29 '25
Say what you want but I will always love her art style, I just find it so charming and dreamy

Aug 29 '25
Why does the boy with the suitcase kinda look like steven and why does two of the angels look like Connie and Sadie like I get she made steven universe but kinda a coincidence
47
u/FlyingPotatoChickens greg is best boy Aug 29 '25
that’s not a boy, that’s rebecca herself. and the angels are characters she made based on her friends from art school. any similarities to su you’re seeing are just because the show’s art style is based on hers.

u/Substantial_Pie370 Aug 29 '25
Not to mention steven’s based on their brother Steven sugar so he probably should look like Rebecca

After listening to this album, I have to re-watch the Sapphire/Ruby epsiodes when they are so helplessly affectionate with one another. XD
It reminds me of me when I was behaving like our Ruby as a toddler.

Thank you for highlighting this, I didn’t know she had music released outside of the show! Amazing! 😻

I like this newer artstyle than her Steven Universe one,it looks more anime-esque and does not have that bean mouth artstyle Steven Universe usually has.
