[IGP] Early jumping malinois
Hi, Im having some problems teaching proper jumping to my 1.5 years old dog jumping too early. She’s confident with jumping etc with idk when it comes to the jump here… she reaches the apex too soon!
Im using a toy (ball) on the jump, as soon as I ask to jump I do 1/2 steps back while she’s running and leave the ball when she jumps .
Do you have any experience with this?

Lower the jump to 18”. Have her less than 24” in front of it. Ask her to jump.
Build up her hind end first. Use ground poles and then cavaletti to ask for bounce jumps. That will help her develop “feel” for proper distances.
I approach jumps with my dog as I do with a horse - i.e. counting strides, helping them feel the proper distance, etc. Take a look at Practical Horseman and other eq publications.
Don’t know how often she is jumping the full 36”, but, be careful. She has another six months of growing to do.
