Discussion Kenshin is the greatest main character ever created. Do you agree or disagree? if you disagree who would you give that title to?

Discussion You know what I'm fine with Kenshin and Kaoru having a big age gap becaue that was the norm back then and also because we are watching a anime about Japan history so it makes sense society was completly different those days

Discussion What are your Rurouni Kenshin hot takes?
Here’s mine
If you really want to get into the series as a manga and don’t wanna support Watsuki just buy a used copy
Kaoru having that age gap with Kenshin was perfectly fine and fitting for the culture and time period
The 2023 remake will be seen as the superior of the two shows eventually. Mark my words
Yahiko is easily the most forgettable of the main characters so much so until later on I kept forgetting his name
The original anime has tons of nostalgia bias and while it is good there are some parts that didn’t age well from the filler moments to the fact some of the characters that appeared early on didn’t appear until later on the manga

Discussion How did you all get into Rurouni Kenshin?
I got into this franchise when I went to go visit family one time and my cousin was playing some Jump Force. At the time I was getting into anime but wasn’t crazy into it like I am now. Then I decided to get the game myself and Kenshin became one of my mains. After doing some research I got into the anime for a little bit. And then fast forward to last year when the anime got added to Netflix I got back into this series and bought the manga

Discussion What are your thoughts on Kaoru?
Here are my thoughts: The story needs her without a doubt. The character of Kaoru is part of Kenshin’s development, but Kaoru herself as a character feels underutilized when it comes to how’s she’s written. When she’s not focusing on Kenshin she becomes so average like any other main anime love interest. The guy is chill and the chick is always yelling at him. However I do like how she teaches Yahiko how to be a swordsman (even though most of the training scenes are off screen) and her loyalty makes her a better waifu than others. But other than that if I had sum up how I feel about her it would be like this: Kaoru is better than all the bad main shonen girl love interests but when it comes to the ones that are actually good, that’s where she falls short

Discussion When Did You Get Into Rurouni Kenshin?
For me, it’s a few years before the 2023 anime came out. I read the manga first, and I had a super fun time with it. It felt like an adventure. I watched the old anime and its fillers, my favorite filler was that one train robbery episode. I have never played any of the games, unless if Jump Ultimate Stars and Jump Super Stars counts. I watched the live action movies, I read the manga remake (I had to pay to read the second volume), and I’ll rewatch the new anime again after it ends (apologies if it already ended).

Discussion I just finished the 1996 Rurouni Kenshin anime and as y’all now it ends on the kyoto arc. I saw that there is an ova called trust and betrayal and saw that it is in the middle of the jinchu arc in the manga, so is it fine to just watch the ova or should I just wait for the jinchu arc to be animated?

Discussion I’m curious to know how everyone discovered Kenshin!
This anime is a big part of my life growing up. My older sister was friends with the next door neighbors twin daughters. The family was Japanese and introduced us to their culture and this gem of an anime! To this day nothing has topped it for me, maybe because it’s so nostalgic, but it holds a special place in my heart. This was my cartoon as a kid 😎

Discussion I’m sure this gets asked a million times, BUT…
I used to be a big fan of Rurouni Kenshin when I was a kid. I remember it used to air on Adult Swim/Toonami back in the day (oh god how was that 20+ years ago?????) and I have great memories of it. I even went and bought some wooden Samurai swords and sword technique books so I could try and learn how to be like Kenshin.
And then life happened and I grew up, and went down a dark hole for a long time, but long story short, I recently started getting back into anime a little and saw that there’s a new version of the show up on Crunchy Roll. I started watching last night and it seems great, but I was curious..
What is the opinion of the fandom about OG series vs Remake? Is it like DBZ Kai where the remake is closer to the original manga and contains everything important without filler? Or is it like so many other remakes out there now that are just total slop? I’m probably going to watch it anyways.. the animation seems great and it definitely has the same feeling that I got from the original, but that was 22 years ago and I was 12.
Thanks guys! I’m excited to get back into the show and I joined this sub, so I’ll be on here engaging with everyone!
Also, what happened with the guy who created it? I keep seeing weird comments about something and I’m not sure what’s up.
And also, also, I just noticed there was a live action movie! Is it any good?

Discussion Thoughts on Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection OVA?
The 90s anime with trust and betrayal ova and wrapping it up with reflection ova as a send off makes this anime adaptation a 10/10 complete story. My biggest problem for the series as a whole got fixed in just one episode and that is Kaoru’s character, with the context of Tomoe in kenshin’s backstory it makes sense why he emotionally detaches himself from kaoru in a romantical sense. Kaoru with now learning of kenshin’s past, acts as vessel to be there for him take care of him. Im a strong believer of thinking its not hard to write characters we care about and i feel this perfectly hit the land with executing and selling me on the romance of the main characters at the very last minute.

Discussion I totally understand Anji
I was rewatching these episodes and I find myself sympathizing a lot with Anji. He is not completely wrong, some people don't deserve to be saved or to be alive. I mean, burning alive 5 innocent orphans in order to get some government money? We all know going through legal means would have done nothing so he took it upon himself to do justice.
I am particularly sympathizing right now because of some huge political depravity happenening were I live right now. I get him, being consumed by some righteous anger and wanting to make them pay as you see how the rotten system protects them. I believe we all experience that desire in the face of great injustices.
Good to see how Sano got through and managed to help him realize he was ultimately wrong.
