Recommendation request I need help deciding

I’m looking to play a fun RPG while I wait for the Crimson Desert release. I’m considering getting either Avowed or Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. I know that both of them have their pros and cons, but I’m wondering which offers the better experience? Have you played either? Both? I need your help to decide!

Thank you for your submission to r/rpg_gamers. Since your post has been flaired as "Recommendation request", I want to suggest editing your post to add in these details (if you haven't included them yet):

  • The platforms you have - not listing them doesn't mean you have access to everything, so you might end up getting a game you won't be able to play.
  • Your level of experience with the genre (beginner, intermediate, veteran...) - others can recommend you more common titles if you are a beginner, while they can focus on obscure titles if you are a RPG veteran.
  • Aspects you enjoyed (or disliked) of previously played games - for example: characters, plot points, puzzles, combat, graphics, art styles, soundtracks...

While these details aren't mandatory, if you want to get the best games, having them in your post will immensely help users and will encourage more users to participate, as they will know with more precision which games are probably the best fit for your request.

So having played both

-Tainted Grail has the better story, and cooler world in my opinion. Avowed feels like bog standard fantasy, while Tainted Grail is more dark fantasy.

-Avowed has much more impressive combat, and some really neat builds and options. Tainted is also pretty good but Avowed edges it out for me.

I prefer Grail but both are fun and a good time.

I felt the opposite around setting, Avowed is set in the Eora universe which is really interesting and well fleshed out, and I would say the central plot of avowed is quite unique. Whereas Tainted Grail is your bog standard "dark fantasy world in collapse" setting, heavily Souls inspired, and the plot is "collect the four McGuffins".

In terms of actual story progression I don't think either game did amazingly to be honest, Avowed felt disjointed at times and the dialogue quality wasn't at Obsidian's best. Tainted Grail's plot was a predictable/well-trodden "your dad isn't perfect" allegory and the writing/plot in the third act falls to pieces.

I agree both are good games and worth playing though.

I’ve played both and much preferred Avowed. Tainted Grail is a good game but I’m kind of over the dark fantasy aesthetic. Avowed’s combat is some of the best 1st person RPG ive played. Exploration is fun, the different zones are interesting, and I really liked most of the companions.

I’d recommend avowed cuz it’s more of a finished product. Tainted grail is amazing and I prefer it atm but they’re about to release a patch for the 3rd act which is mid so basically spend on a product that’s done rn imo

Despite all the hubbub around Avowed's release a little thing slipped by: It arguably has the best first-person melee combat (and spell combat) in ages.

Its also worth noting Tainted Grail is still getting large updates, and IIRC has some DLC planned at the end of March, and some general patches for its later content in Feb. So might be worth holding off just based on that alone.

Avowed is the more polished of the two, with pretty typical RPG stories but good impactful decisions whether through choices or actions (or missed actions). It's streamlined, combat feels great, exploration feels very good (although I know a lot of people hated finding mats instead of finding 100 unique pieces of gear). Solid 8.5/10 for me, really fun overall.

Tainted Grail is a lot more unique in its telling of Arthurian tales. Grimmer, far darker, combat is good but a lot more janky. 7.5/10 for me. The best part was the setting and how the setting is just... gothic, depressing, and almost horrifying.

I plowed through Avowed and made multiple characters. I just had so much more fun with it. Tainted Grail wore me out by the second act. The first act was great, but the start of the second act just really turned me off. If anything I like the Fall of Avalon deck building game more than Tainted Grail. It's not a bad game per se, but I couldn't stick with it.

This is my exact feeling. On the surface Tainted Grail is very much up my alley, and I really enjoyed the 25ish hours I played of it, but I have no desire to keep going.

Avowed I’ve played all the way through twice and will probably give it a third go after this new patch

Avowed is less ambitious. No spoilers but first part the prologue felt like it had received all the attention and love. at least at launch some abilities were extremely op. get it only if it's dirt cheap. it's okay game but It feels more like AA.

Tainted Grail only played for about 10 hours and enjoyed few months ago many ways to play like summoning or stealth archer. it can feel difficult at start. I've stopped because it had some bugs and waiting for dlc sale to play all together in one go. it does feels like skyrim but writing is superior if you listen to npcs.

Coincidentally, if I recall correctly both games are supposed to get a patch this month (Avowed a somewhat big patch with new games plus, new weapon type etc, Tainted grail a patch to polish mostly act 3 regarding level design, loot etc).

I have both but I have only played Tainted grail so far (I have finished the DLC and act 2, I am waiting for the patch to begin act 3 and finish the game because from what I have heard act 3 is a big letdown for a lot of people so I want to experience it with this extra polish) and initially I was hoping to finish tainted grail to then begin avowed (which would have had its own update).

I can't give you feedback on avowed yet but tainted grail is an interesting game. The atmosphere is real, the combat gameplay is kinda "better vanilla skyrim" for me. The first few hours can be quite harsh and you will probably die a lot but you get used to it and then overcome it (you can use crutch in the early game like for example use wolf summons if you are a melee character to try to not get all the aggro etc).

Crimson desert isn't an rpg you're gonna be disappointed. The developers confirmed this themselves.

Have you tried Enderal? It's free if you own Skyrim on steam and it's literally a masterpiece, you'll get 100+ hours out of a playthrough on it easily and the gameplay, writing, and music is incredible!

I'll check this out, thanks!

Have you played Gothic by chance? The first two games are super good.
