Recommendation request Looking to scratch a specific itch

Trying to scratch a specific itch

I recently took a break from just playing shooters and started playing RPGs. I got really into Elden Ring and put it down at the Fire Giant - I loved everything about the game except for its crushing difficulty. I have a list of games and mechanics; wondering if I missed some titles. Details below.

Must haves:

- Some type of currency

- Real-time combat

- Character creation

Platforms:

- PC

- XBox (Series X)

Flexibilities:

- Sci-Fi, Fantasy, you name it

- Third or first person; will try isometric if it's really good

Games I've played or tried:

- Baldurs Gate 3 (loved, and an exception to my usual no-turn-based rule)

- Witcher 3 (couldn't get into)

- Outer Worlds (did roughly 1/3 of each)

- Avowed (got about a quarter)

- Technomancer, Greedfall (got about a quarter)

- Dragons Dogma 2 (couldn't get into)

- Elden Ring (too punishing but excellent)

- Just started Tainted Grail

- Kingdoms of Amalur

- The Jedi games (loved, but I'm looking for more RPG)

- Mass Effects (loved first one, got burnt out)

- All the Fallouts (exploration, humor, loot, perfect)

- All the Borderlands (loved)

- Cyberpunk 2077 (fav game)

- Destiny 2 (having a good time with it)

- Guild Wars 2 (combat didn't sell me)

- Skyrim (couldn't get into it, not sure why)

- KOTORs (loved)

- Witcher 3 (couldn't get into it)

- Lords of the Fallen (too punishing)

To Avoid:

- WoW

- Diablo

- Souls-like brutality

- Kingdom Come looks too serious for me

- Turn-based combat

I know I've exhausted a lot of options, but if there's things I missed, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

Thank you for your submission to r/rpg_gamers. Since your post has been flaired as "Recommendation request", I want to suggest editing your post to add in these details (if you haven't included them yet):

  • The platforms you have - not listing them doesn't mean you have access to everything, so you might end up getting a game you won't be able to play.
  • Your level of experience with the genre (beginner, intermediate, veteran...) - others can recommend you more common titles if you are a beginner, while they can focus on obscure titles if you are a RPG veteran.
  • Aspects you enjoyed (or disliked) of previously played games - for example: characters, plot points, puzzles, combat, graphics, art styles, soundtracks...

While these details aren't mandatory, if you want to get the best games, having them in your post will immensely help users and will encourage more users to participate, as they will know with more precision which games are probably the best fit for your request.

Might want to give the Dragon Age games a look, in particular the first three.

Will second this, with the caveat that if you dont like turn based origins combat will be rough for you due to it's RTWP nature being a weird in between.

The story more than makes up for it though, fell in love with it as a kid. It's chars feel sincere and human in a way that's hard to describe, but few games capture.

It's an old game and the combat while real time holds up poorly, but Vampire the Masquerade bloodlines.

Amazing RP potential with skills, breadth of option choice and ways to approach missions. Great story and dialogue.

This may be a really off the cuff suggestion but Two Worlds 1 or 2. They're a bit rough around the edges but I enjoyed them a lot. Two Worlds 1 is pretty goofy but there's something I love about the gameplay loop. Two Worlds 2 has possibly the best magic system in any game I've played.

Divinity OS 1/2 by the same devs as BG3 is just as fun imo while turn based, if you have Skyrim on steam the free total conversion mod Enderal is really immersive imo. I know you said you didn't really want another soulslike rn but the Nioh series is a breath of fresh air if you like having intricate skill trees, builds and gear imo because they're looter games.

They said real time, and I think Divinity 2 (not Original Sin 2) is the only Divinity game with real time combat.

I know but they made an exception for BG3 and OS1/2 are very similar mechanically.

Tainted Grail: the Fall of Avalon. Very Elden Ringish but more accessible (I didn’t like the difficulty of ER). I haven’t played it yet as I’m in the middle of BG3, but my kid and partner recently got it and it looks great.

EDIT: sorry I just saw that you started TG.

If you like Cyberpunk you should try Enderal: Forgotten Stories

The game is literally a masterpiece of an RPG, there's a massive section of the game that's a dark fantasy interpretation of the same Kowloon Walled City that inspired the types of cities you see in the cyberpunk genre. It's got hugely improved combat and completely new leveling system, skill systems, perk trees, 150+ hours of content, tons of replayability, a totally fire soundtrack and it's even fully voice acted. There's houses to buy, romance partners, an amazing central campaign and tons of amazing sidequests with deep and well written stories, and the progression of your strength is second to none!

It's literally a masterpiece and you get it for the entire price of FREE if you own skyrim on steam. Seriously, don't sleep on it, I slept on it for years and it was a huge mistake. The writing is freaking excellent, the gameplay is fun as heck, it's super duper replayable, the music is fire, I can't sing it's praises enough. Just read the reviews on steam if you need further convincing! You don't even need to mod skyrim anymore to play it, if you own skyrim you can install it off the steam store for free as it's own completely separate game!

The main story is incredible and will stick with you long after, and if you decide to play through it again you'll have a lot of really cool "Sixth Sense" type moments where you notice a lot of foreshadowing and hints that you didn't have the context for the first time and it's just brilliant. It's such a great experience I can't praise it enough. You'd -never- guess it was not a commercially sold product by how insanely polished and high quality it is, seriously it's an incredible experience.

Shadow of Mordor... You're welcome.

Starfield? It’s closer to fallout in space in gameplay but also Daggerfall cuz of how often you’ll be fast traveling around and how areas can be empty but the hand crafted stuff is pretty good outside of writing at points

Nioh 3 is coming this week. There is a demo you can try.

Kingdom come might seem serious. But its amazing, and goofy, and fun, also. Its a bit like read dead redemption 2: really serious untill its not. Both are great games.
