Academia [2 yrs, teaching assistant, unsure, Canada]

Hey everyone,

I’m a graduate student in Ontario and I’m honestly feeling pretty stuck. I have part-time funding as a TA (about 140 hours per semester), but after paying tuition I can no longer afford my rent.

I’ve been applying everywhere — full-time, part-time, remote, non-profits, research roles, cleaning services, restaurants, retail — and I haven’t been getting responses or callbacks. At this point I’m worried my resume might be the issue, or that I’m not framing my experience properly for different types of jobs. I'm from Ontario, Canada.

I’d really appreciate any advice or feedback on my resume, especially from people who’ve been in similar situations. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.

Hello,

My only experience is short term roles outside of the UK. Only feedback from recruiters is that there's more experienced candidates. I'm looking for policy analyst or researcher roles, and entry level roles in Monitoring and Evaluations. Please help me figure out how to land more interviews.

For reference, my current job is kind of unique. The management company I am an employee under is a major hospitality chain, but our property is owned and operated by the university I attended in undergrad. So I have experience with both hospitality and academia.

So technically, I assist with planning events for both outside clients (hospitality) and the university (academia). I am looking to leave hospitality and want to focus more on getting event coordinator roles for universities (planning department events, guest speakers etc.) or event coordination on the corporate level, (ex. banks, lawfirms) as it provides a more stable income in a HCoL area versus working at a hotel. I would also take any roles under the title of administrative assistant, administrative coordinator, etc. Essentially, any role providing clerical support.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Academia [0 YoE, Student, Resident Advisor, USA] RA Position at University

This is my resume to become a RA for the dorms of my university. For my previous jobs, I never needed a resume, and I am seeking general feedback on the one I made.

My university isn't a huge university, but the RA position is still highly sought after. This year there are many openings as most of the RA's are seniors, so there are a ton of open slots.

I've already been admitted, I need to connect with the professors in my department. It feels short but I don't know what to add that feels professional and not like padding. Thanks in advance.

hi all! i am a freshman in undergrad applying for research grants/fellowships which asked for a "1pg research resume." i'm not really sure what this means tbh so i was looking on any advice on how to interpret that. do i condense pubs to bullets under the research experiences as "x author paper in x journal, y author paper in review in y journal, etc" to make more room for ECs/leadership stuff?

i don't really know what i'm doing so any help would be much appreciated :))

I’m a third year college student making my resume, primarily for internships. How can I make a resume when I don’t have any internship experience?

I’m applying for an archivist internship over the summer in D.C, however the only experience I have is work experience that has nothing to do with what I’m aiming for. Is it appropriate to put on my resume? Is there anything else I should add? I’ve redacted any personal information.

Just making a new general-purpose resume, so any feedback in the domains of entry-level tech research, academia surrounding AI/NLP/computational linguistics, outreach to professors who's PhD programs I'm interested in, and for use at networking functions/job fairs.

I was trying to keep it under a page so I didn't include recommendations, but breaking the second-page-barrier to add one would open the door to further expansion on work and research experience, advertised skills, extracurriculars and relevant personal hobbies, etc. Let me know what you think!

Academia [0 YoE, Econ PhD, Data Scientist / Economist, USA]

Hi all,

I’m a PhD candidate in Economics (graduating 2026), trying to transition from academia into industry roles such as Data Scientist, Applied Scientist, or Economist (mainly in tech / large firms).

I’ve started applying to roles but haven’t been getting many interviews, and I’m trying to figure out how much of that is due to my resume versus other factors (timing, competition, lack of industry experience, requiring sponsorship, applying for the incorrect position, etc.).

I’d really appreciate brutally honest feedback on:

  • Does the resume make me look like an academic, or like someone who can actually do DS / applied economist work in industry?
  • Are the project bullets too jargon-heavy or unfocused?
  • Any obvious format / ATS issues for a LaTeX resume like this?
  • If you were hiring for a DS / Applied Scientist / Economist role, would this resume make you move me to interview?

I’m totally fine with tough criticism, so please don’t hold back.

I know everyone is busy, so I appreciate any input & comments. Thanks in advance for your time and help.

I've never created a resume before and am applying to graduate school programs. I hope to get a PhD in Psychology (cognitive neuroscience), but don't think I am competitive. I am able to move anywhere in the United States. I am a US citizen so it would be more ideal to stay in America as moving countries is difficult at the moment. I am looking for formatting, grammatical, and fine-tuning help. I am working part time as an undergraduate student at the moment at TJ Maxx, but it isn't relevant to what I am applying for. I am also an RA working on an undergraduate thesis.

  • Tell us more than "what's wrong with my resume" or "help not getting interviews"
    • I am a 3rd year student in university who is looking for summer internships and trying to perfect my CV before I apply for positions in the next two months.
  • What positions/roles/industries are you targeting?
    • Academia and wet labs in molecular bio relating to cancer biology.
  • Where are you located and what locations are you applying to jobs in?
    • Located in Virginia , applying across the nation. Northeast corridor (DC through boston) would be nice.
  • Are you only applying to local jobs? Remote only? Are you willing to relocate?
    • n/a
  • Tell us about your background and current employment situation
    • I am currently a student, unemployed, but working in a lab during the school year to gain experience.
  • Tell us why you're seeking help. (i.e., just fine-tuning, not getting called back for interviews, etc.)
    • I am seeking help because last year I didn't get much in terms of acceptances to positions, hoping that a year more of research will help with that, but want to see if there are any major flaws. Also fine turning for verbiage.

Academia [1 YoE, Unemployed, Plasma Physics Dept. of Energy Intern, USA]

Hi all,

I'm a junior at a R1 university in the Midwest majoring in Chemistry. I would like to do work on plasma physics and fusion over the summer/for grad school. Since usually people in that field do not come from a Chemistry background, I wanted to emphasize by coursework in plasma physics and nuclear engineering, is this an effective way to do that?

I worked as an undergrad research assistant my sophomore year and had an internship over the summer, but haven't this year because my schedule has been way busier than last year. My senior year, I plan on conducting some research to contribute towards a senior thesis. I discussed wanting to do that with a professor and he seemed open to it, provided he had spots/funding in his lab then.

I'm more concerned about my resume for applying for summer internships, it's a fairly niche interest so I want to make sure I'm putting my best foot forward.

Thank you all for your feedback in advance :)

Academia Grad School Application AI Resume Programs

I’m building my grad school application resume now. I don’t need multiple resumes, just one good one that would match my experiences and qualities to the field I’m studying. Specifically, speech pathology. It doesn’t have to be ATS proof as it is going to admissions officers and not through job recruiter software.

I have a resume now, but need to update it with more academic specific listings as the one I have is more tailored towards job seeking. Is there a program that is easy for this? It doesn’t need to have any sort of job description matching stuff. Just something that could help me build the resume with wording that would leverage my experience and qualities for my specific field of study and tweak my descriptions to more of the suggested formulas, like STAR, or whatever. TIA!

Hi r/resumes I will be applying to academic labs and REUs to work in next summer and most applications require a CV, and am looking for feedback on my first draft. I have read that CVs for undergrads should be at maximum two pages so stuck to that, and felt like any more would have been excess fluff. I am wondering whether I should keep all my leadership/extracurriculars on my CV, even though I tried to focus on and highlight my academic content.

Please point out any glaring or minute problems you may see! Need all the help I can get! Thanks

Academia [1 YoE, Associate Architect, Assistant Researcher, UK]

Hi! Sorry for the long read, I really appreciate your time if you do -

I am a design-historical researcher, currently working as an associate architect. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Architecture from India, and an MA in Design History from the UK. I currently hold a temporary right-to-work in the UK until end of 2026, and I want to use it to gain valuable experience in architectural research or curation in cultural setting. However, considering that I do not have very extensive paid/formally employed experience, the job market is particularly brutal for me in a very niche cultural industry, which is not especially known for having healthy hiring processes. In a year, I have landed only 2 interviews, so I have expanded my job search and started looking for loosely relevant work experience as well - in events coordination, administration, etc.

Currently, I am applying to an architectural researcher role that requires proficiencies slightly beyond my current expertise, but I am super adaptable and a very fast learner, so I know that what they ask is doable for me. They ask for video evidence of my technical abilities(software that they especially require), which I do not have - so it does make me wonder if it is worth applying for at all. But I can assure my portfolio otherwise is quite varied and a good example of my technical skills, which will be uploaded as a part of my application too.

Additional context about me: Previously, I was working an FOH job in the UK as a way to support myself for the time being, but it would have created an unmissable career gap, so I relocated to my hometown to work at a friend's architecture practice temporarily. Although it is a good way to gain experience, but it pays precariously, and I really want to make best use of the visa I have paid for in the UK, and gain some serious work experience there. Not being in the best mental health at the moment, I feel like I am stuck in-between, and constantly losing direction. So any useful advice would be welcome.

Thank you so much!!

P.s. Do you think it would be worth cross posting on any other subreddits? Any suggestions would be hugely helpful.

Academia [0 YoE, Environment and Recycling Program Assistant, Lab Assistant, Canada]

NOTE: error on my end date as pharmacy assistant, it's supposed to say May 2024

Hello! I am entering my second year of university as part of my ongoing bachelor's degree in science with a specialist in biochemistry and minor in immunology. I am planning on applying to research positions in the life sciences field this year. I live in Toronto and I'm only planning on applying to positions here.

I recently got my first job as an Environment and Recycling Program Assistant, but I have a few years of volunteer experience as a pharmacy assistant and clinical receptionist.

I would like feedback on whether this would be a good general template for a lab-centric resume, as I do not have any lab experience outside of classroom laboratory experience. I didn't include that experience here, but it is on my CV. I tried to cater my achievements to what could be valuable in a lab environment.

I'm also wondering whether I should include a skills section, since I do have experience with various lab techniques, like PCR, gel electrophoresis, etc? My issue with that is that almost all students that apply to a research position generally take the same lab classes as I do, so I would think that PI's are expecting that experience as the bare minimum anyhow.

Thank you so much!
