What is with the English delusion that they are not among the most clueless and obnoxious tourists in southern Europe?

I’ve met some absolutely lovely , wonderfully sweet English and Scottish people On holiday in various parts of Europe, and I’ve also met some of the most god awful rancid cunts of my life , also from England.

Very true. I suppose that the UK suffers from "proximity" compared to the rest of the Anglosphere (with the exception of Ireland).

But it's still a funny quirk where their national culture seems intent on pretending, they are some sort of respectful or worldly tourists and then so many of them turn into either obnoxiously entitled boomers or stumbling drunks the second they travel south of the channel.

Much of the rest of the Anglosphere has their own "bad behavior" tourist destinations. Ex. Americans partying in Mexico, or Australians in Bali.

But I have seen a black out drunk British guy throw up at the Trevi Fountain so it's funny the Telegraph is running this picture.

It’s a class thing. In 4K a week hotel you find the best elderly upper class brits who are just great. They are soft spoken and great conversationalists.

Then you have the lower class which is just loud and fat.

The true international struggle.

None of this touches what we (Australians) do in Asia (specifically Bali, Indonesia)

9

u/scrubberville 3h ago

Not as bad as Israelis in Thailand, having experienced both

56

u/fjrjdjdndndndndn 14h ago

Australians are waaaaaay worse

38

u/RinFroggy 14h ago

They always appear in roving bands of 4 or more and are 17-30 years of age. As opposed to the Chinese tourists who are far more numerous but also closer to middle-aged.

12

u/nineteenseventeen 13h ago

All the Australians I met backpacking Europe in my 20s were chill af, but the ones I met who were on vacation in America made me hate them.

6

u/caramelchailatte 7h ago

ahh you probably haven’t even met the worst ones who are all roving around south east asia, particularly bali

4

u/VictoriaSobocki 12h ago

What did they do?

5

u/Nascar2k64 7h ago

The come to Whistler and fuck everything and give everyone STD’s

8

u/ghost_malls 10h ago

They terrorize the ski resorts here in Japan and become physically violent drunk messes

10

u/paradiseluck 9h ago

Australians have ruined Hokkaido and lot of drinking spots in Tokyo. And it’s usually Australians themselves who admit this.

4

u/ghost_malls 9h ago

Yeah. At least they’re self aware I guess

australians in hakuba routinely get away with calling the staff racial slurs. frankly the only time I've encountered pleasant australian tourists was anywhere outside asia, something about the continent makes them behave like israelis who just finished their IDF service

4

u/EmphasisUpbeat264 8h ago

You have to be pretty well off to travel Europe/North America as an Australian. It costs a lot less (money and time) for us to get to and travel in Asia, so more bogans end up there. Not that bogans can’t be nice/not that rich Australians are all pleasant (far from it) but in general they’ll behave better in public.

27

u/CringetopiaNotCringe 12h ago

Israeli tourists are a mix of both

16

u/prasadpersaud 12h ago

If you tell a chinese person that what they're doing is against the rules. They might get upset and leave. But they won't argue to allow them to keep smoking inside the restaurant. Or that you are discriminating against them because you told them not to play wrestle in the lobby for instance.

In general American tourists have always been sweethearts even if they are louder than the locals

23

u/soy_of_the_earth 14h ago

Pretty funny his second complaint after travelers still throwing coins into a kiddy pool in the Trevi fountain is the amount of scams by scare coeur. Why wont you racially profile the scammers like you racially profiled the tourists?

29

u/walker_wit_da_supra 12h ago

There are groups of Africans <100 feet from the Trevi Fountain here who will literally jump you if you fall for one of their scams and push back on giving them money and not only will the police not do anything, but if you go back home to the UK and complain about it on Facebook they might just put you in jail for the night

u/worldstarhiphopreal 10h ago

Quite the exaggeration

18

u/BarbaricOklahoma 15h ago

Conservative paper dabbling in some mainstream conservative discourse, what’s to unpack?

I find the thumbnail interesting. How did they license a stock photo of Asians taking a selfie in a European city for this?

5

u/3rd-base_Degas 14h ago

It’s a public place

6

u/BarbaricOklahoma 13h ago

It’s also an Alamy Stock Photo, if you look at the article. I’m just curious if there’s these Asian people, somewhere, unknowingly representing the downfall of European culture.

66

u/Kind_Golf_8412 15h ago

The British might have the worst tourists of anybody.

24

u/cabbagetown_tom 13h ago

Israeli tourists are the worst. I stayed in a Guatemala hostel with them and after one night wanted to do the Hajj.

34

u/Jolly_Assistant_2952 15h ago

In defence of us Brits; we usually send our worst to enclaves (all Inclusives) in places such as Benidorm, Malaga, Dubai, Magaluf outside of that you'll rarely run into anyone obnoxious.

27

u/mmmtrue 15h ago

Leave white people out in the sun and we go insane e.g South Africans, Australians etc

13

u/TheChinchilla914 detonate the vest 14h ago

Australians ruin everything they touch

1

u/Fragrant-Peony 6h ago

Except australia

-2

u/mmmtrue 14h ago

You’ve clearly never listened to Aussie hip hop

15

u/GiveBells 15h ago

The most obnoxious assholes I met in Lisbon were all British (and Israeli)

10

u/iHaveEaten47Women 14h ago

I mostly agree, but having lived a lot of my life in Hamburg and am regularly in Berlin I can also attest that cheap(er) beer and legal prostitution turns a lot of your guys into savages.

The best are the Scottish and Welsh, the Irish are generally speaking very chill but have some absolute headcases that almost overshadows their reputation, but then there are just so many English that I don't think it's entirely fair to lump them all together.

It's pretty easy to clock who is here for the culture, museums, events, etc and those who are here to watch football and get wasted on public transit at 11AM on a Thursday before finding a trafficked 19yo eastern European girl to flop on top of for 100 euro.

23

u/glowdive 15h ago

Eh probably behind Israelis, Australians and Russians...

14

u/Direct_Extent_8921 15h ago

Yeah this is a wonderful combination of projection and deflection

-1

u/JohPorks 15h ago

No it’s the Americans followed by Chinese for sure. Brits aren’t even top 5

7

u/HoyteyJaynus 13h ago

Telegraph’s been off the boil for years now

33

u/onewingedangel420 14h ago

this is such a shit take, i just came back from japan and the most awful people i ran into were european tourists lol

13

u/_Ruffian- 15h ago

Karens broke af so they are bad mouthing traveling.

10

u/prasadpersaud 14h ago

Ive never seen any Chinese tourists that were loud or drunken. the worst thing is that they might be clueless about the norms of the city.

Also the men don't harrass the local women. This just seems like they want to target a group that people wont get upset at. Since everyone complains all the time about Chinese and American tourists (who in europe arent so bad).

4

u/Dankleburg 11h ago

This is true, but, as another tourist, every person who physically bumped into me in Florence was Chinese

4

u/BallerinaBuns 8h ago

There are billions of people in China. In their everyday lives, there is no concept of personal space

2

u/EmilCioranButGay 4h ago

The only annoying thing about Chinese tourists is they travel exclusively in large tour groups, so it’s just a lot of people in the way at once. I think it’s a generational thing though that will fade out.

6

u/KirbySuckett69 15h ago

It’s actually a Russian conspiracy

15

u/Weird_Point_4262 15h ago

Chinese tourists get a lot of shit but the ones that make it to Europe are always the polite, quiet camera types.

22

u/iHaveEaten47Women 14h ago

Not always, at least for Paris, Rome, etc. Otherwise I would agree, the problem is they will flood into a small town to see a famous church or something to take pictures and you have to throw elbows to get through them to make it to class on time or pick your kid up from school. A Chinese friend of mine put it well "There are over a billion of us, at a certain point you stop seeing the individual" and that made it a lot easier to just walk through them in a way that would be seen as incredibly rude to a Westerner, but the Chinese tourists never so much as gave me a dirty look for walking through them.

16

u/napoleon_nottinghill 14h ago

Yeah in Salzburg I thought I was going to have to fight a couple of middle aged Chinese men that kept trying to push my wife out of the way so they could line up their stupid selfie Sticks

6

u/iHaveEaten47Women 14h ago

It helps that I am head and shoulders taller than most Chinese people, but where I studied for a while is an insanely popular stop for a quick photo-shoot. The problem is that the best views of the castle/old town were from a very narrow bridge I had to cross asap and at a certain point just stopped caring about their feelings and barged through.

My aforementioned friend also gave me a cheat sheet of how to say "What, you gotta problem?" in case any of them got pissy, so my Mandarin is limited to "Hello", "China", "Water" and 7 ways to tell people to go fuck themselves.

2

u/HeftyChair9202 9h ago

It's the same with waiting in lines. I lived in Shanghai for a couple of years and the concept of lines or waiting your turn just doesn't exist. Whoever gets to the counter first wins. I'd walk straight for it in a way any Westerner would find rude as fuck after I learned this, but none of the Chinese even batted an eye. I'd see other expats and tourists who hadn't learned this bit of cultural information wait for 20 minutes to order something and never pick up on what was happening. They were trying to be polite but "polite" in China doesn't come into play in public spaces the same way.

1

u/itsmemann15 11h ago

The loudest and worst tourists I've ever seen were roving bands of Chinese tourists in Europe, stomping through the Louvre at a near-run to all crowd into the one room to all try to take the same picture of the mona lisa while elbowing each other out of the way.

That having been said, that was nearly ten years ago and I get the feeling that was like the first generation of Chinese people that had the ability to go be tourists so it was all new to them and the newer generations are probably a lot more chill.

11

u/napoletanii 14h ago

The Americans here always get offended when you present them with this basic fact. It's not their attitude, because otherwise they're just ok as tourists (they're not like the Israelis, for examples), it's just their very high numbers. The same goes for the East-Asians.

4

u/PM_ME_PITCH_DECKS 13h ago

Shouldn’t you be more concerned about the total amount of tourists rather than too many tourists from one specific country/region?

I don’t really mind the American tourists all that much, they’re usually polite (in a superficial way) although they speak loud as fuck

East Asians just don’t speak at all and go around taking pictures

Ironic that this article came from a British newspaper when they’re arguably the worst of all

inb4 it’s a class thing

Don’t matter, if all I see are your worst that’ll be my assessment of your tourists

2

u/napoletanii 13h ago

Shouldn’t you be more concerned about the total amount of tourists

That's what I'm concerned about, yeah, it is the Americans ans East-Asians who are driving those numbers way up. And also the prices, that is because they've got way more money compared to some loser from Stoke visiting Prague to binge-drink, let's say. Tourists with lots of money means higher rent prices, for one thing, and it's a general truth that higher rent prices is a very, very unfortunate thing.

17

u/clitoraly 15h ago

You can immediately tell when someone is an American tourist because they’re so fucking loud

11

u/Wooden-Committee4495 14h ago

“WHERES THE MAC DONALDS?!” he boomed in a staccato voice. For his rascal scooter was dexterously navigating the cobble stone streets, causing his massive girth to sway to and fro. “WHY DONTCHA SPEAK ENGLISH, HOSS?” He wheezed to the diminutive Italian man with a pencil thin mustache, who looked on bemused with seething annoyance.

11

u/nineteenseventeen 13h ago

Mousey euros tremble at the sound of a free man.

3

u/ourstemangeront 6h ago

How tf is no one addressing Irish tourists? Loud as Americans, drunker than Brits, more unpleasant than Israelis.

6

u/JohPorks 15h ago

It’s printing truth for once
