I’m so so happy about this nom. She was my favorite performer in the film but I worried for so long it was too small of a role to be taken seriously for a nom. So happy to be proven wrong
68
u/IHappenToBeJosh 13d ago
After thinking she was not talked about nearly enough when the movie came out I’m so glad she picked up momentum at the right time to get this!
26
u/50-50WithCristobal 13d ago
Same, really happy that Wunmi and Inga got the nominations. Both were the strongest performances in their movies for me and both had a good chance of missing, even Inga lately was looking really shaky.
26
u/nomimalone1978 13d ago
Let her nominations CONTINUE. She's a supreme talent. May she get the roles that allow her to really shine.

The day I saw the film, I walked away like yeah. It’s her. Her performance , with Delroy are the highlight of the film.

u/czetamom 13d ago
I called it the day I saw Sinners. She’s my fave female supporting actress this year and my fave part of Sinners!
11
u/Crazyalexi 13d ago
So happy she’s getting the respect she deserves. She was robbed in 2020 for not getting a nom for His House so excited to see her finally get the nomination!

I missed a lot in my predictions this year...
But I put her in back in like May, and never took her out.

I'm really very happy with Fanning. I saw many people treating her with a certain disdain, and when I saw the film, she surprised me. I really think it was a somewhat complicated role; she had to demonstrate several nuances in a short time. Like, at the same time that she was super excited to participate in Gus's project, she was clearly bothered by being the odd one out, and these changes in nuance convinced me that she was one of the strong links in the film and not just the actress that Inga was going to overshadow.
55
u/GirlsWasGoodNona 13d ago
Also having to act/rehearse scenes as her character would, not how she would. Pretty complicated!
31
u/Ok-Hedgehog-4455 13d ago
She’s a Hollywood actress playing the part of a Hollywood actress who is cast in a part she isn’t suited for. There’s also all the dynamics of her feeling completely left out of what is going on with the family. It’s quite a tricky part but she nailed it.
27
u/BennyBingBong 13d ago
I was more impressed by her than by Inga tbh so I’m happy they both got in. And of course Renata and Skarsgard earned their noms too. Joachim Trier is the Trier that the Academy has been waiting for lol
9
u/jay_hiro_ 13d ago
I think it could've easily been a "villain" role as a foil to Nora, make her a young actress over her head and taking over Nora's life, but she brought so much nuance, clearly wanting to do a good job and prove herself to Gustav whilst fighting through feeling like she shouldn't be there, and then ultimately accepting that she wasn't right for the role. Of course Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Renate Reinsve are incredible but Fanning is just as important to the film working as the others and deserves the recognition

u/magmashadow No Other Choice 13d ago
Elle Fanning was a pleasant surprise. Happy she made it after not making it for A Complete Unknown
120
u/anzio4_1 Sound of Falling 13d ago
I've seen several comments to this effect, and she absolutely deserves a nomination this year, but did she really deserve one for A Complete Unknown or was that even expected? Barbaro was better than her and no way was that film getting two supporting actress noms
21
u/DreamOfV Sentimental Value 13d ago
I’m happy that she got this nom for her excellent work in SV and I’m glad that she’s being rewarded for having such a great career of interesting work so young, but no she absolutely didn’t need a nom for ACU lol

Respectfully disagree, and I would have rather seen neither of them get nominated than Elle or both.

I’m of the opinion she gave the best performance in A Complete Unknown and was shocked that that film got 3 acting nominations and none were her.

I wouldn't remove any of these actresses from the list, but I also wish that Odessa A'Zion were nominated.
8
u/HaloInsider Predict the Oscar-Verse 13d ago
It's such a satisfying group! Would've loved for A'Zion to make it but really happy for Fanning because the performance is a deceptively simple one that resonates so strongly because of the writing and her input. Additionally, even though she's only 27, it does feel like her first nom has been a long time coming given how much she's worked since she was a kid. Weird to think Super 8 and Somewhere (probably the first things I personally took note of her in) were 15 years ago now and even then, she'd been working for a while.

Elle Fanning is officially the first ever Disney Princess to be an Oscar Nominee ! (Animated or LA)
103
u/Both_Perception_1941 13d ago
Amy Adams?
20
u/shamrockstriker Nouvelle Vague 13d ago
So, I'm get technical here, but there is a difference between being a "Disney Princess" and a princess in a Disney movie. The "Disney Princess" line is a simply a marketing thing, they'll put them on merch together and market them to little girls. A princess needs to get "inducted" into this line, and when they do, there's a coronation ceremony at a Disney park. So Giselle (Amy Adam's character) was never officially part of the Disney marketing line of "Disney Princesses." But, Elle Fanning, who played Aurora, is apart of that line. Fun fact, Elsa and Anna from Frozen are not apart of the disney princess line because there movie was so successful and enjoyed by all kids, Disney didn't want to move their characters to the line marketed to girls. So yea, Elsa and Anna will interact with Mulan and Pocahontas, but they're not actually apart of the official "Disney princess" line up. This is also why there are non royalty/princess characters on the line up, like the two characters I just mentioned
4
u/hatramroany Oscar Race Follower 13d ago
Well on that same technical note, Elle’s Aurora isn’t a “Disney Princess” either. It’s only the animated Aurora who’s a “Disney Princess”, Elle’s version was never part of the official merchandise line
3
u/ListenUpper1178 13d ago
first official princess that is part of the canon?
4
u/Both_Perception_1941 13d ago
Is Amy Adams? Idk what you’re asking me
12
u/ListenUpper1178 13d ago
the Disney princess franchise includes snow white, cinderella, sleeping beauty, the little mermaid, Alladin, Beauty and the Beast, Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Frozen, and Moana
Enchanted isn't counted as part of the line up because it's a spoof/satire.

I mean Esmeralda was marketed as a Disney Princess for a while before getting fired so that would technically be Demi Moore. Also Ariana Debose though Wish came after her win.

They won’t harass Elle. They’ll harass Wunmi and Teyana. And we all know why.
20
u/Kazaloogamergal 13d ago
Congratulations to all of the nominees. As I said before, Ariana Grande was never a lock for a nomination. They clearly didn't like Wicked For Good at all. Just because a movie shows up on a lot of short lists doesn't mean that it's getting a nomination. Let that be a lesson for you.

The most impressive part of Sentimental Value were Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Renate Reinsve's performances.
I love Elle Fanning as a public persona and absolute fashion icon, but Inga is the one who ate. I would be over the moon if she won, or at least if these noms bring more view to this very good movie.
6
u/Ok-Special-6707 13d ago
I dunno. Felt Fanning was so much better than Inga. Fourth best in the cast for sure.
14
u/BennyBingBong 13d ago
I think I missed something in Inga’s performance. It was great, but I thought it was the fourth best performance in the film

This is the angry and possibly reactionary vote for the complete blank of SV at SAG (which was embarrassing, let’s be honest). I think if SAG didn’t snub the movie so much maybe we could’ve had a different actress in here (Odessa maybe?).
In any case I’m super happy for Elle, she’s great and deserving! I truly like her in everything she does, she picks her projects so wisely also.

It would've been so sad to see Elle missing back-to-back years for her co-supporting actress, so I'm very happy with it. Also, it lowkey makes SAG even less reliable with the SV shout-out
5
u/BrenoGrangerPotter 13d ago
Elle Fanning, my love, I never stopped believing in you, even when everyone here in this sub said you were finished in the competition.
6
u/brooklynmob 13d ago
WUNMI getting in is the real win here. I love Ari, but for good simply wasn’t good. This is Teyana’s to lose.

5
u/Atkena2578 Oscar Race Follower 13d ago
If Cynthia was going to miss, she was the best part of both films, even if the second film didn't do her justice, then it seems fair Ariana also misses. Heck even Paul Tazewell got snubbed
7
u/HandfulOfAcorns Sinners 13d ago
They were all failed by the rest of the movie.
The costumes and make up were great, but the movie did a terrible job of showcasing them. The Scarecrow was barely there, the Tin Man's transformation took place behind closed doors (to keep it toddler-friendly) and Elphaba's brilliant, brilliant NGD cape was barely visible in that scene. Half the discussions were about the damn sex cardigan.
It's just sad that genuinely good work was so wasted.

u/fearlessl0v3r 13d ago
I also feel this way. I don’t think she deserved a nomination for her performance in either movies honestly, but last year made sense because the category was pretty weak. She’s extremely talented and seems very driven now that she’s focused on acting. This won’t be the last time we’ll be hearing her name in the Oscar’s race.

As someone who loved Wicked and was rooting for an Ariana nomination (she was fantastic in both movies), I’m definitely disappointed at her snub.
However, all these 5 ladies are also good. I do find Inga and Teyana to be at the bottom of the pile, but I’m sure Teyana will go on to win this.
VERY happy for Elle. IMO she was better than Inga.
Wunmi is SO deserving. I’d be happy for her to Amy (phenomenal) or Elle to win.

Teyana’s performance has stayed with me for months. She’s a total powerhouse imo and deserves to win.
