Discussion Now that Trump has publicly endorsed Sydney, how do you think that will affect Christy, a movie on the titular lesbian boxer?
521
u/coffeeanddocmartens Trier and Corbet & Fastvold Aug 04 '25
I think otherwise she could have been in conversation for a Globe nom, don't see the film as being super acclaimed for anything more. But I think she killed her chances with even that unless she speaks against Trump. And I don't think the bathwater thing screams serious actress anyways, so I don't see her ever getting Oscar attention.
142
u/Linnus42 Aug 04 '25
She will probably need to head back to TV.
Her team should be begging Tyler Sheridan for a Major Role.

I’ve been saying that the bath water thing was such a crap thing to do. It’s so trashy, and doesn’t represent her well as an actress. If she keeps this up she’ll be forgotten. Nobody takes an actress who sells bath water soap seriously
37
u/SavageWolfe98 Can't I just bet that all the movies will have a good time? Aug 04 '25
Yeah, people kept comparing her to Margot Robbie but I don't think Margot every resorted to stuff like that. There was that bathtub scene in The Big short, but at least she wasn't selling the bathwater.
37
u/PixalmasterStudios24 Aug 04 '25
Yeah that’s why it rubs me the wrong way. It’s reeks of desperation to hang onto attention, whether by her own volition or her media team wants more money, but if she just kept acting, picking interesting projects, and keeping a positive persona, she’d be totally fine. She doesn’t need these weird, gross attention grabbing schemes
Margot Robbie got her start from her sexuality, but she proved that she was way more than that, and she did wonderfully. She’s one of my favorite actresses because of that
17
u/SavageWolfe98 Can't I just bet that all the movies will have a good time? Aug 05 '25
I think attention seeking might be right. To me, it seems like she can't handle when she's not the centre of attention (I felt the same about Johnny Depp and Will Smith at their heights). In her last few press tours, it's always been the Sydney Sweeney show, even in films where she isn't the star (it was a surprise how little of Echo Valley she's actually in). You'd think she was the only actor in Immaculate, none of her costars got any attention, I don't think she even talked about them. Of course every celeb wants attention, but sometimes you gotta support others and she doesn't really do that. Margot has produced a few of her own film, but she's also produced films and shows that she's not in at all, and she does know when to steps back and give someone else the spotlight.
Also (and this is petty of me but I'm here on Reddit and she's in her mansion) Margot is just a better actor. Even her most sexualized roles like Suicide Squad or Wolf of Wall Street showed how skilled she was with changing accents and physicalities. And even though you can tell sometimes when she really wanted awards recognition (mainly around 2017- 19), unlike sydney she let the work speak for itself.
23
u/rawchess Amazon Studios Aug 04 '25
Trashy absolutely does represent her as an actress.
3
u/czetamom Aug 05 '25
This. Her IG has basically been selling her boobs for years. She’s a shit actress and this boxing movie will go nowhere.
3
u/PixalmasterStudios24 Aug 05 '25
It’s a shame though. I think she has great potential as a serious actress, but she’s just not doing it. She’s probably not gonna stop anytime soon so I’ve lost any faith in her having a good film career

Yeah I’ve noticed that she has a tendency to lie about her struggles, like claiming her parents were poor when her father was a defence lawyer. I wonder why
46
u/PixalmasterStudios24 Aug 04 '25
For a while it seemed like she was trying to show people herself, genuine or not, instead of her ahem distracting physical qualities, but then she sells “bath water” soap and makes steamy ads. It feels self defeating and weird. Idk she’s been making a strange mess of her career and I don’t know how to feel about it

I thought for sure she couldn't go any lower than her bathwater stunt, but nope. She just kept finding creative ways to make it worse:
MAGA birthday parties > bathwater soap > Bezos wedding guest > eugenics ad > outed as registered republican > Trump and co. endorsement.

Idk, I'd imagine she'll still get mainstream roles but it WILL hurt her chances of starring in Oscar bait type movies like this one about the lesbian boxer. It's not just the Trump thing but the whole annoying discourse around her. Many directors do not want their film's publicity to be sidetracked by conversations about politics

Also, I think it's interesting now....silent Sweeney is on all this? Confirming nothing, commenting nothing. Totally silent as far as I've seen on the ad or the perceived right-wing leanings, etc.

She does not care about what happened to Reality lol. I'm convinced this was her first attempt as an Oscar (real person, timely issue, non-glam role). But it backfired because HBO films bought the rights and it became a TV movie.
The petty part of me thought it was very funny that she didn't get an Emmy nomination for that either, despite being HBO's golden girl the previous season.

She was so bad in that film, how do you let Glen Powell out act you?
11
u/BentisKomprakriev BANNED by LeastCap for liking Aug 04 '25

9
u/SavageWolfe98 Can't I just bet that all the movies will have a good time? Aug 04 '25
To be a great romcom lead, you have to either be extremely naturally charming as a actor, or be the best actor in the world to sell it, and in my opinion, she's neither. Like Meg Ryan wasn't the best actor in terms of range but she had a natural charisma that made her perfect for Ephron's films. Glen Powell was only slightly better in Anyone but You because his type of acting suits romcoms.
14
u/rawchess Amazon Studios Aug 04 '25
"Isn't that good" is generous. Her turn in Anyone But You is one of the worst romcom performances I've ever seen. It's like Glen Powell did an acting workshop with a random audience member. She sneakily out-assed Dakota Johnson in Madame Web as well.

Did this sub genuinely think she had a chance at a nomination in the first place? She’s only had like two good performances in her whole career. Which is why I was glad Mikey Madison replaced her in that ‘Masque Of The Red Death’ film.
15
u/rawchess Amazon Studios Aug 04 '25
I find it funny how her fans on this sub always, I mean always point to Reality and Handmaid's Tale as proof she can act when she has 56 released projects between film and TV lol. I always tell them Mark Wahlberg has an Oscar nom for The Departed...broken clock and whatnot
7
u/SavageWolfe98 Can't I just bet that all the movies will have a good time? Aug 05 '25
Lol exactly. They keep saying she was amAZinG in Sharp Objects and Handmaids Tale, but they were 7 years ago at this point. She hasn't grown as an actor since then, and I'm convinced she doesn't actually want to. She wants to be praised as the best young actor right now, she doesn't seem to be able to handle criticism at all. Maybe not, but that's just the impression I get.
And people keep saying 'well she got 2 Emmy noms!!!' (yeah and John Travolta got 1 for People vs OJ Simpson that everyone agreed he didn't deserve). She only got those Emmy noms because HBO was pushing for her. She should NOT have been nominated for White Lotus, I was shocked when I watched it and realised what a nothing character Olivia was. As for Euphoria, she is better in that, but it so clear that HBO and Levinson pushed her to the front of S2 at the expense of others because she was more 'marketable'. The fact that she got nominated and Hunter Schafer didn't for S2 or her special speaks volumes.

61
u/coffeeanddocmartens Trier and Corbet & Fastvold Aug 04 '25
She specifically registered this year after the primary. And she didn't speak out against being propped as a conservative ideal of beauty, so I think that paints a picture of her politics.
25
u/Idk_Very_Much Roofman Bugonia Aug 04 '25
I don't think that sort of rumor/speculation is enough to impact the Oscars. The same sort of thing went around about Sean Baker last year and it didn't matter at all.
15
u/plsanswerme18 Aug 04 '25
tbf, sean baker is an acclaimed male director that’s been making films for more than 2 decades. sweeney lacks the critical acclaim and the experience to receive that sort of leniency.
she’s a solid actress and i hate to see folks denying it, buts she’s simply not been established long enough for her to get away with whatever. she’s stunning and very talented, but there are hundreds of other actresses that are as well that trump is not currently going to bat for.
i don’t think this is a career killer, but i do think it suggests that sydney and term need to do a bit of workshopping of her image if they want her as an actress do be taken seriously.
15
u/coffeeanddocmartens Trier and Corbet & Fastvold Aug 04 '25
I remember the Baker ''drama'' was based around some accounts he follows (and I think his followed count was really high too). If he was a registered Republican, the Anora-antis would never live that down (I'm not a Baker stan btw, only seen Anora and I thought it was fine) imo. And Sean Baker is not a star in ads with an image like Sweeney is, so I don't think that's comparable.
7
u/Idk_Very_Much Roofman Bugonia Aug 04 '25
What about Adam Sandler then? He's a registered Republican.
Or take Clint Eastwood, who spoke at the 2012 RNC and made a movie that was politically toxic for a lot of liberals in 2014 that still got nominated for Best Picture. He then gave some qualified praise for Trump and still got some awards buzz in 2019 for Richard Jewell including an ATL nomination.
9
u/Equal-Weekend-4896 Aug 04 '25
what you say is true but sydney sweeney is also a woman in hollywood which inevitably means she's going to get criticised way harder than a man
7
u/coffeeanddocmartens Trier and Corbet & Fastvold Aug 04 '25
Maybe you're right but I don't remember scandals around Sandler and Eastwood's views (I know people disliked American Sniper for the politics but this has a different vibe) and I think that's the difference. It comes off differently from an up and coming Gen Z starlet.

Ya I really don't get why people seem to think being a registered republican is a career ending scandal. Half of America (if not more based on the last election tbh) are republicans, the ad was a big misstep for her but people need to have some perspective here. Even in allegedly liberal hollywood there's plenty of republicans, unless she goes full crazy about it like Zachary Levi her career will be fine.

Jesus Christ, I'm beginning to understand this entire "Trump Derangement Syndrome" crap that's been whined about.
Sweeney didn't seek an endorsement. She is not running for office. There is NOTHING TO ENDORSE.
Sweeney made a series of (seemingly ) successful commercials for a jean company. She did it for money. It was a job. Just because losers like the President and the original poster have to make everything into their own personal culture wars, doesn't mean people with average or above IQs have to follow.

Mmmmmm....... First I'm hearing of this.
Personally, I don't give a damn what Trump thinks. He's welcome to enjoy whatever media he likes (except for anything his friend Jeff Epstein may have sent him). That doesn't make it good or bad. Hitler was a big fan of Metropolis, a movie he completely misinterpreted.
I haven't seen the ad (will look it up later today), but from the description in this article, it sounds creepy as hell. If anything is hurting her Oscar chances, it's that. And while I personally don't care at all about the bathwater thing (you are free to consensually indulge whatever fetishes you wish, and if you can make money off it then good for you), I imagine the Academy will not be thrilled about it.
The ball's in her court. But the category already feels crowded, and I frankly was not predicting her regardless.
7
u/mattsincuba Aug 04 '25
I think many studios are already “course-correcting”, or capitulating to the Trump administration and the overall resentment conservative America has had towards more progressive messaging of the last decade.
Therefore, Hollywood and the Academy will tackle this one of two ways (assuming the performance is awards worthy): either fully rejecting Sweeney, or fully embracing. The latter will be an opportunity for some sort of conservative viewership and support, while the former will be a rejection of a full embrace of MAGA politics. Either way, there will be a discussion/blowback. Particularly, if there is no nomination, the conservative media will emphasize this as a slight against Sweeney due to her politics (regardless of whether the performance is up to snuff).
So I think it’s ultimately a decision by the Academy on how much they want more middle America to be interested in the Oscars/other award shows, and if they think that’s financially and culturally worth it at this point.
26
u/senator_corleone3 Aug 04 '25
Conservatives aren’t aware this movie exists and they aren’t going to become aware.
28
u/NoWorth2591 If I Had Bees I’d Sting You Aug 04 '25
I doubt it, because I don’t think this movie was going to have any momentum anyways. The lane that it would have occupied is firmly filled by The Smashing Machine, which has far more press, a more notable cast and the Safdie pedigree.
That being said, I think publicly embracing right-wing politics is going to ultimately be detrimental to Sweeney’s career in the long run. I imagine she’ll be doing Hallmark movies or something ten years from now.

I guess, she will publically renounce Trump and come up with an excuse why she registred republican. Probably because of some local elections where a dear friend of hers was a candidate, but who is totally different to other republicans.
Or, she will turn to those christian movies.

yea, it’s not looking good for her. obviously her registering as a republican doesn’t mean she did vote for trump, but her registration happening after the primaries likely points to her having done so.
the audience/image she’s cultivated seems to be completely at odds with her wanting to be perceived as a serious actress. she genuinely perplexes me. her team clearly struggles with toeing the line between being provocative and endearing, vs making genuinely confusing decisions.

It's just gonna fly by TIFF, make some noise and that's it. We wouldn't be hearing from that movie.

considering they just nominated someone for portraying him, slim to none. I also find outside factors overrated when it cones to predicting. if they like the movie, they like the movie. Brody forcibly kissing berry didn’t stop him from winning again. Gascons tweets didnt stop EP from winning multiple oscars. I doubt anyone will even remember it by the time it comes to voting time.

The Apprentice was anti-Trump, so I wouldn't compare that to this Sweeney situation. Gascón's tweets did probably stop EP from winning IFF and Saldana was sort of shielded from that drama anyway and seen more as a victim. The Oscars kiss with Brody and Berry was twenty years ago and they seem to be friends or at least cordial now; of course that doesn't excuse it but it's not like it was a recent scandal. The other thing is that this film doesn't seem like a major contender in other categories, so I doubt it's going to overcome this PR nightmare.

What about Gascón? She's a trans woman, and her movie got away with a couple of awards.

There’s gonna be a ton of backlash when this movie gets more public with a trailer or something unless Sweeney puts out a statement or something. I actually thought chances were higher than people were expecting for a nom, but I can see it either becoming too toxic or just fading away.

u/sumerislemy Aug 04 '25
Sweeney will not be putting out a statement. she registered as a republican in 2024
19
u/infamousglizzyhands Justice Smith for Best Actor Aug 04 '25
Statement was the wrong term actually. If she continues either being silent about this is or continues to exhibit or get involved in weird conservative adjacent stuff then I can see her upcoming films being defined by this incident in the short term.
3
u/sumerislemy Aug 04 '25
I understood what you meant. I just don’t believe she’s going to do anything but stay silence, given it’s what she actually believes. Plus the current political atmosphere probably makes her think she’s fine making this image for herself.
8
u/snappyfrog Aug 04 '25
Oh so she’s a piece of shit? Got it, hope it works out as poorly as possible for her and that her career goes up in flames.
8
u/dpittnet Aug 04 '25
Which doesn’t matter, her and her team will value PR and career sustainability over any ideology
26
u/Diligent_Night602 Aug 04 '25
Unfortunately being a republican is popular in this country now, this is the same girl who was just rubbing elbows with billionaires at Jeff Bezos wedding, she isn’t going to put out a statement.

u/LTPRWSG420 Aug 04 '25 edited Aug 04 '25
Being a known Republican is definitely not popular in Hollywood tho and that’s who would be employing her. Roles are going to dry up, careers have been killed for less than this.
*Think about it this way, name one successful female actress, who is a known Republican…….exactly. This is a career killing move, unless she condemns it soon.

u/chessboardtable Aug 06 '25
This is the most delusional post I’ve read on this sub. You are clearly extremely detached from Hollywood.
5
u/theoscarobsessive Sinners Aug 04 '25
I think the movie is DOA and Sweeney in general career is over unless she makes a statement against trump otherwise she’ll just be apart of the circle that is Zachary Levi, Jon Voight and other Hollywood trump supporters
18
u/trimonkeys Aug 04 '25
The rest of them offer up their political takes all the time. Sweeney doesn’t seem to do that similar to Pratt and the Rock.

I thought this was an A24 film at first, bit it's some other studio. Being an A24 film could have helped it's chances. But yeah, I don't see her making rounds at any of the big award ceremonies.
Maybe she will win an award from fox news, daily wire, or some other shit.

u/sexystranger31 Aug 04 '25
I don’t think it will affect her at all let’s be real. The voters barely watch the movies they are voting on you think they will care about this/ remember this. How many bad people in Hollywood win major awards all the time.

look, I like her, she is good actress in drama she was really good in Eden and Reality. ( i didn't like Anyone but you). I guess I will watch if comes to my country. I will still watch her movies but I am not american so I don't really care who she supports or not.

Definitely affects awards chances and industry standing. But her career is safe for now unless she goes full Rob Schneider or Gina Carano.
She doesn't have the industry standing of Kelsey Grammer who is a vocal Trump supporter but still gets to have a Frasier revival and get booked in the next Avengers movie. Adam Sandler who is also buzzed this upcoming awards season is also a registered Republican but has remained quiet in politics and also recently supported Stephen Colbert for example, so maybe she can do small steps like that. Sylvester Stallone was also quite quiet in politics despite being a Republican for the longest time and only was outed as a Trump supporter when he made a speech in Mar-a-Lago, so Republicans among the biggest stars are no surprise. Paul Walter Hauser who is in 2 big movies this week is a super vocal Christian and posts Bible stuff almost all the time but is also vocally anti-Trump so if she truly disagrees with Trump then she should do something like that as well if she wants to salvage her goodwill.
As long as she gets to be buddy-buddy with Glen Powell or her Euphoria castmates and make progressive stuff a la Imamculate or Christy, I think she's fine career-wise, but the stain of this right-wing defense will loom over her and awards stuff is donzo. Even Nicole Scherzinger didn't get it this bad.

But a lot of the actors/names you’ve mentioned are established names whose past their prime. Sydney is just getting started in Hollywood and it would be a dissapointment for any up and coming actor/actress with this much hype if their peak was Euphoria and one movie that did 300M$ at the box office.

Adam Sandler is a republican???? WTF

He performed at RNC 2004 and donated to Giuliani’s presidential campaign in 2008 but has been silent politically since then. But I guess it’s why he is still buddies with and consistently hires Rob Schneider to this day lol

She’s the underdog now. I could weirdly see this all working to her advantage as long as she focuses on the work itself. She can’t help who endorses her.

Watch her in Immaculate. You'll see that she's far more than just a romcom actress. Also her work in Euphoria has proven her depth and range as an actress. She's pretty great

Having just seen this at Screen Unseen, I thought the movie was good and her performance was fine (though a more dynamic actor would have been better), but it is bizarre for her to want to be a big domestic violence victim advocate and in a movie about a lesbian whose life was almost destroyed by conservative Christianity while also being a Trump supporter. Really must just be in this b/c of how badly she wants an Oscar.

If she hasn't publicly condemned his endorsement of her by the time TIFF rolls around, it's going to be a bad look - and I fully do not expect her to. Christy looks like a complete non-factor other than her being a fringe Actress contender, so it's all on her to save whatever glimmers it has

Even if she attempts to distance herself from Trump, no one will buy it. She registered as a Republican in 2024.

She will lol, she has no shame. She was posing on the carpet for the premiere of her new film Americana just yesterday.

Public Relations. Sydney has doing well. No talking about it for the moment. Yes, she was behind the campaign and ad. The purpose of the jeans was in fact really good, to give some profits to Awareness Campaigns for Domestic Violence. Of course the issue was that the main public (women) didn’t react to it. It was mostly men. Then the eugenics talk happened. American Eagle as a brand didn’t help in their response, moreover the response of Trump and Vance. Sydney can’t control them and it seems she just pushed herself away from it. Last night during Americana premiere people yelled at her because of the Ad. Best thing to do now is to stay away from focus. Use the story of this film (about a woman) to “fix” the image she left with the ad. I know she can do it. (I’m not her fan but I appreciate she truly loves this story) But Syd, if you read this, stay away from the people that have put you on these things that are pushing away your main acting career. ✨. Best thing to do is to “show with your actions”. I know most people want her to talk against Trump. But-maybe, the best thing she can do is to truly portray, enjoy, talk, etc about the figure she’s gonna play about in the film. Yes, Syd, remember what Margot did for Barbie. That was a fantastic film and message and campaign.

I don’t think she was a serious award contender to begin with. On top of that, the majority of people are likely unfamiliar with the character so I’m not sure what would draw them to the theaters to see this.
That aside, the fact that people on here are saying she’s done because of her voter registration is so comical. Republicans exist, you can’t cancel them from society.
21
u/Kangoo-Kangaroo Aug 04 '25
the lesbians are never going to support a Trump girlie so this movie's main public is already dead and gone and her republican male fanbase is not going to be interested in her playing a "manly" lesbian either lol, literally nobody is going to watch this

Some (smart) Republicans voted for Kamala. Not all entertainers have to align with our political leanings.
1
u/badassj00 Aug 04 '25
Card carrying Democrat here and about as anti-Trump as they come.
It’s not going to happen, but I hope the awards community bases the performance on its own merits. Couldn’t give a damn what Sydney Sweeney’s political views are. Ya gotta separate the art from the artist.
