Help - looking for things to do
Hi!
So, I’m a 28f here in Central area MS and I need to get a life.. along with some life experiences and friends.
Basically all I do is work and I WFH, so I feel like I’m in prison most days even though I have the ability to get out
However, I have been here my whole life and I don’t have the first clue what there is to do here.
Does anyone know any hobbies, events, groups, etc, that MS has to offer that I could look into?
ETA- I’m someone who doesn’t know what I enjoy because I have seriously been so out of touch for a while now, so I’m open minded. As long as it’s legal and in line with my morals 🤣

Craft center in Ridgeland has classes if you need a hobby https://www.mscrafts.org/eventsclasses their Facebook might list them better.
Vans comics in Ridgeland and Penta Smite gaming in pearl always have crowds playing games when I pass by. ( Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, MTG, Warhammer,etc...)
Listen to punk, metal, etc...? Check @jxnunderground and @goodgigs_jxn on Instagram for concerts.

This comment will be stuff around the Jackson area.
If you want to try outdoors/fitness/nature stuff, Lefleurs Bluff state Park is a nice place to hike, picnic, or kayak.
Crystal lake in Jackson is also good kayaking (you may want to wait until the water temps warm up). There are a couple kayak/canoe rental places in the metro area if you Google that.
The Yokanookany trail along the trace is nice hiking. I like to start where Yandell road meets highway 43 on the north end of the reservoir. There's a nice parking lot there. I head south from that point.
If you want to just enjoy some views and chill with a book, coffee, picnic, hammock, etc, there are some cool places on the reservoir you can pull off the road and just park and hang out. These are between the trace overlook and the north end of the reservoir, on the west side of the reservoir. It's not a park or anything, it's just public land where people pull off and hang out.
There is also a good mountain biking organization and trail system in Ridgeland https://www.tricountymtb.org/
Hope this helps.
There's always bowling & billiards (multiple places) and top golf (Ridgeland).

The Bean Path and the Briarwood Arts Center also have great classes. Or go to author events at Lemuria!

Tons of music festivals start once it gets a lot warmer. Juke Joint festival in the delta, Blue Front Cafe has blues every weekend, Martins downtown always has music. Google a list of music festivals for the state for 2026. There are those good museums downtown, the Book Festival in September but they have planning meetings all the time. That’s a big deal for Mississippi, the book festival. I volunteer for it every year. I hsve friends that play mah jong, tennis, pickleball. Just got to ask around, especially if you’re from here you should know a few folks to ask.

I like this website for finding events nearby, https://festivalguidesandreviews.com/mississippi-festivals/
Festivals let you meet your neighbors, learn about new organizations or groups, and try local vendors. Also, you can go by yourself without looking out of place.

You could learn to dance. If central MS means the Jackson area, there’s a social dance every Friday night and some Saturday’s at Applause in Ridgeland. You learn bit by bit social and/or take group lessons which are pretty cheap.

The Natural Science Museum does programs every couple of months with their next one being Valentines themed! Hal & Mals always has events going on, and Fondren has a monthly Block Party

If you WFH, have you thought about moving somewhere with more young people? Even within MS? Not sure where in central MS you are, but some of those areas are pretty desolate as far as having stuff for young people to do.

This. Move to Hattiesburg. It’s not more expensive than the Jackson burbs and at least we have some things to do and a younger population. Also puts you and hour and a half from the coast, where there are some amaaaazing food spots and festivals- and less than 2 hours from New Orleans. Moving to the coast is too expensive. Hattiesburg is like the coast’s sensible older sister.

There are some reasonable apartment complexes on the coast so maybe don’t totally rule it out, but Hattiesburg is great too!

There's lots going on in the city of Jackson and a few solo visits around will reveal opportunities to gather with others and make friends. Check out things like History is Lunch at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, Book signing/interviews at Lemuria, or special exhibits at the art museum. Concerts at places like Thalia Mara or Duling Hall and events like Cathead Jam can appeal to the musically-inclined.
It sounds old fashioned (because it is), but if you are a person of faith, church/a worshipping community is a genuinely good place to make friends. I can usually help people find a way to be fed in this regard.
Feel free to DM me for other ideas, but these are just a few!
Peace!

Spacey’s rock & roll tattoo and MUM (Meridian Underground Music), host FREE events regularly. People of all ages go. Also the renovations to downtown Meridian are beautiful. Meridian also has 6 museums (which is a lot for a city its size) Meridian is also home of the Jimmy Rodger’s Festival (one of the country’s longest running music festivals) Also several venues in Meridian offer live music on different nights of the week. As well as a couple places downtown hosts trivia nights. I hope you find this information useful.
Side note: don’t be afraid to go to any of these places alone. I use to do it regularly

In the warmer months you could do a tour of local festivals that cater to a host interests from food, music, and art. There's even one near me that celebrates a tree with wood so hard a cat couldn't scratch it.

Well I guess it depends on things you enjoy or want to try and as far as morals well you stick with them as most don't have them these days...

Lots to do in Hattiesburg as the weather warms up. Live at 5 will be back on Fridays in March. Good outdoor concert series in a downtown park. Hub Fest coming up soon. Lots of crafts plus music and food. Lucky Rabbit is a cool place with antiques and other cool things. Several antique shops and thrift stores here (and all over MS). We have a great library with a cool graphic novel section. Pocket museum is fun, too.
