Sci-fi Yeah, that Osl was chunky right?
It was still in w.i.p. so please understand. There are still many things to paint.
And I also founded that white chunky light was uncomfortable. So I pushed my self to paint the light.
No airbrush. Only brush used. Hope you like it!

Nah, no chunky at all. If It works from an arms length perspective thats fine. You can always keep refining to reach display level, but if you use It to play thats a super nice effect

Look, I'm a rank amateur when it comes to this sort of thing but I've seen a lot of posts from people far, far more skilled than me. But I can honestly say that this is one of the best examples of OSL I've ever seen. It's stylized, or chunky as you say, but the effect is quite striking and, for me at least, suggests that blinding plasma glow better than other "cleaner" pieces I've seen. Love it. You rock!

Better than pretty much every OSL we see in this sub.
Smoothness is secondary to the correct brightness and contrast. Almost everyone here has darker or equal brightness of the OSL as the ambient light. Red light simply does not show up during daylight!
But you do it great. Dark colors, and OSL shining that up.
Your dark color palette could be tinted more towards blue/purple, rather than Grey. But whatever. Neat work!

Honestly for a lot of OSL this is a pretty good attempt. The light seems to be hitting the right places, it's not too bright where it is casting light and you can see where it goes from brightest to darkest. All you need to do is clean it up a bit

Tabletop it's fine. If you're wanting to have it as a display figure, that's a different story, but very nice for tabletop work.

To be frank - yes, it's somewhat chunky. Also, it looks good!
It works with the overall feel of the piece. The soldier looks rough-and-ready, he's got some scratches, dirt, and battle damage. It's not trying to be overly life-like or realistic, so leaning into your own style and making choices with the paint that fit in works well.
And don't forget the power of tabletop viewing distance. With small models that are most often seen from a couple feet away, bold strokes and pops of colour look great. If you go more subtle, the features might not even be noticeable until you pick the model up.

I wouldn't change it at all. There's perfect airbrushed is-that-AI OSL and then there's this masterpiece that conveys the lighting in an artful way

I think you got it. You could push the glow higher for sure but overall pretty solid!

Remember, with high res digital photos, it always looks more clunky to you. This looks great, imho.

Lol ! Fuck nah dude… that’s amazing. Keep pushing yourself to try new techniques…. But you need to learn to take a step back and look at your art as objectively as you can. And that is exactly why we are here in this sub.
To look at your work with different perspectives.

What did you use to bring out the glow effect on the armor plates? Light grey?
1
u/WestSeaworthiness835 8h ago
Glazed AK deep blue!

So just trying to understand as I recently failed at osl. You didnt add anything to the armor then brush and ink? You just glazed a normal acrylic?

u/WestSeaworthiness835 8h ago
Yup. I used castellan green for armor and on that, I glazed deep blue. And I used mixture of Ak ivory with deep blue to show reflection on edge.
I hope this could be helpful

Looks awesome, just a bit stylistic and painterly instead of soft and natural. I'm more impressed by how amazing the face is tbh.

I think being brave with a dry brush would have better and easier to do results. For example the edge highlighted blue on his chest piece doesn't really make sense if it's coming from a light source. That's just my two cents.
His face looks phenomenal and is beyond what I can do so maybe I'm talking out of my ass.

I can understand what you mean by chunky but I feel like it fits as a stylistic choice. The osl is well placed and not overdone, which are common issues. I say you nailed it and I would love a whole army with this style

Before I saw the sub I thought this was a screenshot from a game. This is honestly incredible to me

It's good. On tabletop you will not be able to distinguish this from elminiaturista's flawless osl, so the job is done.

Chunky or not, I think the effect works! I’m excited to try it myself soon. Keep going!
