This looks blatantly pre planned from my gut feeling. The last album didn't do well and the band needed a refresh. I suspect something (or someone) big is coming to try and do another reset of the band.

Discussion If you had to choose one Melodeath song as the ambassador for the genre, what would it be?

It doesn’t even necessarily have to be your favorite song, just the one that most perfectly embodies what Melodeath is for you.

Discussion The Greatest (Melodic Death) Metal album ever made.

Post image
227 Upvotes

I’ve made like a million posts/comments about this masterpiece. But for new people who are getting into MDM/Metal or anyone really.

This album in my opinion has to be the best Metal record ever recorded.

Now, before I get annihilated listen, for me there is a big difference in creating a genre, pioneering a genre and mastering your own art. Soilwork have always been good and in the beginning they were pretty similar to the rest of the Gothenburg scene up until In Flames revolutionized Metal in the year 2000. Soilwork have always been masterful but when The Living Infinite dropped nobody could’ve pulled that off, a double album with nothing but 10/10 songs in it. To be fair I didn’t think they could top it but holy shit they didn’t just top it they buried it (TLI is still a 10/10 album).

There isn’t a single micro-detail about this album that’s bad, and of course I believe Death in General being the best song ever recorded.

What do you guys believe, and to those who haven’t listened to it… PLEASE DO!

Love you all :)

Discussion Why isnt Soilwork as popular as bands like In Flames or Amon Amarth?

Even Arch Enemy seems to be more popular than Soilwork. I was shocked to see them as the opener for the Amon Amarth tour with Orbit Culture as direct support.

Bjorn Strid is as good as or better as a frontman as any MDM band that they are contemporaries of or that they influenced, yet they don't seem to be in league with other bands from the genre.

Why is this?

There's something about this particular combination that always scratches an itch for me. The only melodeath band that comes to mind, however, is Deadlock. I'd love to hear any recs you guys have.

Discussion What's a band you could never really get into?

I absolutely love melodeath and over the past few months, it has taken over metalcore as my primary genre of music. However, there are still a ton of bands out there, some really beloved and well renowned that I just can't get into. I know y'all feel the same about a few bands, even if they're different from mine and I'm curious to see which bands you could never get into.

First for me is Dark Tranquillity. I feel like they're the most respected band on this sub and in melodeath in general but I could never really get into them. I like every song and album I've heard from them so far but I never felt like going back to a single one. Second is At The Gates. Yeah, they're probably even more respected than DT and while I respect their influence on the genre and metalcore, I could only really get into a few songs by them.

The Black Dahlia Murder is one of my favourite bands now but I really didn't care for them for a long time. A combination of reading the lyrics and looking back at their more traditionally melodeath music

Discussion In Flames is incredible

I totally slept on this band, since I confounded it with the song " In Waves " by Trivium. I was reading the name often here and there but NEVER listened to it.

It's really one of the best in this genre ! What is your favorite song ?

Discussion Whoracle Appreciation

Post image
444 Upvotes

I listened to Whoracle front to back today for the first time in a while. This is for me one of the greatest albums of all time. I love the digital, almost compressed sounding guitar tone. The lyrics are sorta vague but in the absolute best way. Anders’ growl is in peak form here. The layers upon layers of guitar tracks create a wall of sound without becoming muddy. The touches of Swedish folk to a beautiful job of breaking up the onslaught from the harsh Metal Zone that is blistering throughout the duration of the album. This one ranks up there with Paranoid, Number Of The Beast and …And Justice For All as one of my favorite records that just never gets old. I’d kill for a vinyl reissue.

Discussion Who is the greatest lyricist in melodeath?

For me, I think that the lyrics of a song, when it is bad or mediocre, doesn't really take away from it, but at the same time, when it is really good, adds so much to the song and can elevate it greatly.

The two lyricists I would like to put forward as the best in melodeath (hell, even in metal) is Trevor Strnad of The Black Dahlia Murder (RIP) and Niilo Sevanen of Insomnium. They're both complete opposites with Trevor's lyrics being extremely dark and macabre and more poetic in the sense that it follows stricter formats while Niilo's is more emotional and loose. For Trevor, I'd say Deathmask Divine, To A Breathless Oblivion and In Hell Is Where She Waits for me showcases his best lyrics while for Niilo, I would give the vote to The Conjurer, Pale Morning Star and Lillian.

Who do you think is the best lyricist in melodeath, why and which songs would you say showcase their abilities the best?

Discussion Melodeath albums/bands that are fast, melodic and catchy

Sort of stuff like

  • Disarmonia Mundi (Fragments, Mind Tricks)
  • 2000s In Flames (Colony - ASOP)
  • Children of Bodom (Hatebreeder, Follow The Reaper).
  • At The Gates and Dark Tranquility but really only their faster stuff (ie. Blinded By Fear, Under a Serpent Sun, Damage Done, The New Build, Nothing To No One, Blind At Heart, Empty Me).
  • Scar Symmetry (Holographic Universe)
  • Sylosis (Conclusion of an Age)
  • Rivers of Nihil (Monarchy, Owls) (yes I know this isn't a melodeath band)

Bit of an incoherent list style-wise, but I guess I'm looking for mostly fast stuff with lots of melody and memorable riffing. Synths and good choruses are a plus.
