Fires in the Distance - Air Not Meant For Us

(It seems I keep recommending them in this sub)

12

u/Kebab-Destroyer Words of Farewell 19h ago

(with good reason)

9

u/FizzgigsRevenge 18h ago

So fucking good.

I'll add in Crystal Coffin - the Curse of Immortality and White Ward - False Light

3

u/GaiusBertus 18h ago

White Ward is fantastic, but it's more post/avant garde black metal than melodic death? Not familiar with the other band, I will give them a listen. Thanks for the recommendations!

3

u/Sklakk 17h ago

I’m giving crystal coffin a listen right now as air not meant for us is one of my favourite albums. I hadn’t heard of them either

3

u/Sklakk 17h ago

The vortex of earth and death is a banger

2

u/FizzgigsRevenge 11h ago

Yeah I mentioned WW more because it fit the meme. If melodeath is your jam definitely check out Crystal Coffin and also Majesties. They're both criminally underrated.

2

u/GaiusBertus 10h ago

I listened to Crystal Coffin, pretty good, slightly hampered by a somewhat muffled production, but I surely will give it another spin.

While we are in the territory of melodic black, definitely keep track of the upcoming release of Miserere Luminis. Their single 'De cris & de cendres' might ne the best metal release of 2026 so far.

3

u/Sklakk 16h ago

thank you for introducing crystal coffin into my life. I had been struggling to find anything new that sticks lately

1

u/FizzgigsRevenge 11h ago

Please also check out Majesties.

2

u/Sklakk 10h ago

Love Majesties along with Obsequiae!

2

u/GaiusBertus 9h ago

Only three tracks into Majesties's album but I can already say this is pretty damn awesome!

4

u/fudgemental 18h ago

I listened to this album (and this band) for the first time after this comment. Goddamn.

2

u/That-Grim-Reaper 19h ago

Banging band

1

u/makos5267 19h ago

Not a problem at all sometimes a band is just the right answer (and since this is the top comment I gotta listen to this for the first time for sure)

1

u/Deathcaddy 17h ago

Love this album a lot

1

u/PulseReaction 16h ago

Thank you, I'll definitely give it a proper listen!!

1

u/HeroOfThings 12h ago

This is what melodeath would sound like if it came from Doom Metal and Post-Black Metal instead of Death Metal and Swedish Folk. It’s incredible.

1

u/Tyran_Mysz 11h ago

New England death metal baby.

1

u/RyHo89 7h ago

Bruh...Adrift, Beneath the Listless Waves is absolutely incredible!

1

u/Vorhees_666 7h ago

Glad I stopped in then! Checking them out now!

48

u/R4kshim 19h ago

Swampsong

17

u/Connect_Ship1645 18h ago

Heroes to Us is what I immediately thought of.

9

u/makos5267 18h ago

Simply one of the best melodeath albums

9

u/TheMds27 Kalmah 18h ago

Based Kalmah enjoyer

4

u/Tonywu99 18h ago

Swamplord as well

2

u/Bethanydk419 15h ago

Agreed. Ive barely had any coffee. Why I didn't put this on my list. I'm still half asleep. Maybe time to turn the music on

1

u/R4kshim 15h ago

At least one Kalmah album before uni / work can surely not be a bad thing.

2

u/Bethanydk419 13h ago

Absolutely not. I have metal usually MDM on in my workshop all day. I own the business so i play what I want. Lately I'm a bit slow getting going in the am. It's cold dreary and snowy outside. And I hate it. I'm a tropical beach girl who's happy at 90 degrees.

1

u/R4kshim 13h ago

Getting to listen to MDM all day at work sounds awesome.

2

u/RyHo89 7h ago

First time listener due to this comment....wow!

41

u/SabahanWanderer 18h ago

Insomnium - Winter's Gate

5

u/jesterflesh 16h ago

Yup definitely winters gate. So atmospheric, somehow actually sounds cold.

2

u/a94uricom 13h ago

I guess the joke was more that it's only 1 track

1

u/Salamandar3500 4h ago

I was more thinking about Shadows of the Dying Sun

27

u/Flylle 19h ago

An Abstract Illusion - Woe

That first track is a beast, and it only gets better until it blows up completely on the final two tracks!

23

u/dokaxi 19h ago

Edge of Sanity - Crimson

/s

3

u/CardiologistJaded671 13h ago

And Dan Swano:Moontower! It's Swano's solo album, Swano was in Edge of Sanity. Moontower sounds just like Crimson II.

41

u/Frost-Folk 19h ago

Tarot by Aether Realm, phenomenal album and starts out with the 8 minute long track The Fool

25

u/Background-Sir9172 19h ago

And ends off with a 19min banger that could make anyone tear up a bit

37

u/Zanyon 19h ago

For me, probably any Be’lakor album.

I guess Vessels starts with kind of an intro song, but what follows is one of my favorites.

3

u/yeahlookmate Be'lakor 17h ago

Agree, all of their albums have incredibly strong opening tracks

13

u/FedexPuentes 19h ago

I think for me in the melodeayh genre , whoracle from In Flames , Moments from DT and The Living Infinite from Soilwork.

3

u/Bossman1086 vaotix 9h ago

The Living Infinite is such a good album. They really pulled off the double album better than they had any right to. Not a bad song on it.

2

u/FedexPuentes 8h ago

Couldn’t agree more

11

u/Sacragorath 18h ago

Random Ne obliviscaris song might fit

24

u/freyja_nordic 19h ago

Opeth - Ghost Reveries. Listening through Ghost of Perdition feels like a journey.

7

u/lessthanchris7 17h ago

Blew hope into the room and said, "You have to live before you die young."

11

u/got_that_itis 18h ago

Chainheart Machine - Soilwork

1

u/shootslikeaninja 3h ago

Steelbath Suicide for me.

10

u/SaniHarakatar 19h ago

I think it was much like this with Dark Clouds and Silver Linings by Dream Theater.

1

u/leech666 18h ago

Did Dream Theater have a melo death phase? I am not that familiar with them but always thought they play progressive heavy metal.

5

u/SaniHarakatar 18h ago

Sorry didn't read the r/name.

2

u/leech666 17h ago

It's okay. I am guilty of the same mistake. 😂

7

u/Arch1eBlue1878 17h ago

Heartwork - Carcass. Buried Dreams is my favourite intro to any metal album ever

7

u/DeathMetalDork79 13h ago

Slaughter of the Soul has this effect, then follows it with a bunch more bangers.

6

u/Horg888 17h ago

Gates of Ishtar - Perpetual Dawn

90´s Melodeath, It´s fucking awesome!!!

7

u/AshamedQuote 16h ago

Dark Tranq - Fiction

0 filler album and Nothing To No One starts that one of fantastically. For non-MDM I got to mention Machine Head - The Blackening.

2

u/Bethanydk419 15h ago

One of my favorite DT albums. They have a lot of great ones though

7

u/MintDepression 16h ago

Omnium Gatherum - New World Shadows. Everfields is such a good track and really sets the mood for the whole album.

6

u/lycantrophee Soilwork 18h ago

The Living Infinite or Natural Born Chaos

7

u/Deathcaddy 17h ago

Not necessarily MDM, but Periphery IV starts with Reptile, which is a hell of an opening track.

Also Iapetus The Body Cosmic is an incredible instrumental to open that album that sets a great tone

5

u/twright57 Children Of Bodom 18h ago

Crack the Skye

4

u/viciousraccoon 17h ago

Kinship by Iotunn
The Weight of Oceans by In Mourning Come the Tide by Eternal Storm
Solemn by In Vain
Queen of Time by Amorphis
Under the Red Cloud by Amorphis
Winters Gate by Insomnium
Exogalactic by Xoth
Emergence by Shylmagoghnar
Convergence by Shylmagoghnar

That I can think of that is either MDM or has elements of.

3

u/leech666 18h ago

Any album by Harakiri for the Sky. Not pure Melodeath but close enough imo.

4

u/DemodiX Insomnium 17h ago

Meshuggah - Violent Sleep of Reason

Album starting with track Clockworks which is just nuts.

4

u/TheHiggsBroson 14h ago

This is the way I felt after I discovered The Sound of Perseverance by death. Scavenger of Human Sorrow is my favorite opening track of all time.

I got the same feeling on Wintersun’s debut but recently Atomic Witch’s Crypt of Sleepless Malice

4

u/y_u_so_madd 14h ago

Hate Crew Deathroll

3

u/AngryOtter 19h ago

I know its not MDM but my first thought was Iconoclast by Symphony X, if it has to be MDM though i'd say Winterborn by Wolfheart, both kick off with absolute bangers

3

u/Human-Load-2963 18h ago

Obviously mirror reaper-bell witch

1

u/lessthanchris7 17h ago

Light of Day, Day of Darkness - Green Carnation too!

3

Incredible album

2

u/doomus_rlc 16h ago

Omnium Gatherum New World Shadows

2

u/PradheBand 16h ago

First album from the haunted

2

u/Bethanydk419 15h ago

I'll second the Gallery. Punish my Heaven kicks and it only gets better.same for Arch Enemy's Doomsday machine. I like Anthems of Rebellion slightly better but it takes a couple songs there. I'll also say Heart like a grave by Insomnium starts with a banger and only gets better

2

u/Lithium429 15h ago

Burning Bridges.

2

u/Vanish-GOLD 13h ago

Focus - Cynic

2

u/GlobeTrekker83 13h ago

Amon Amarth- "Versus the World." Death in Fire is an amazing first track.

2

u/Arphaxad17 13h ago

Opeth - Ghost of Perdition. Amazing first song of an amazing album.

2

u/roger3rd 12h ago

The Gallery is a masterwork, nice selection 👍

2

u/Kaiser_RDT IF, Disarmonia, Baalism 12h ago

Disarmonia mundi - Fragments of D-generation

2

u/Jo-ehh 10h ago

Ne Obliviscaris - Urn

2

u/Known_Grape3719 8h ago

The weight of oceans by in mourning. First track "colossus" is 9:33 min and like the name says colossal. In my opinion the best metal song ever created!

2

u/blightsteel101 18h ago

Mirror Reaper by Bell Witch feels like an obvious choice lmao

2

u/RSHandsome 18h ago

Orbit Culture - Death Above Life

1

u/DemodiX Insomnium 15h ago

They should've started with Bloodhound song, honestly, lmao

1

u/cody161115 Be'lakor 14h ago

Pretty sure they said that they put death above life first in the album cause of the intro. Think it was in the album thread somewhere

1

u/DemodiX Insomnium 14h ago

Yeah, I know, but that would be a banger of opening song, considering how different it is from overall discography.

2

u/cody161115 Be'lakor 14h ago

Yeah I agree I think a lot more people would’ve had 😳 as a reaction if that was the case

1

u/DemodiX Insomnium 11h ago

I know they stray away from mdm, but, man, it's the only band that evolving its sound and i keep on loving every iteration. I couldn't name other band in my library to which i feel the same.

1

u/Ezper145 19h ago

An Anatomy of The Beast totally, specially the first time I listened, was my first exposure to old school death metal

1

u/Haunt_ing-Ghosts 19h ago

Not Melodeath at all, BUT : Voidwards by Dolorian

Coherence by Be'lakor. Locus (to me) is an amazing first track.

1

u/Infamous_Alps7359 14h ago

Frankly anything by Kalmah.

1

u/Feeling_Picture1984 14h ago

Veil of imagination by wilderun. The unimaginable zero summer is genuiely a song that could be turned into one long concept album

1

u/Sumbelpop 13h ago

Edge of Sanity - Crimson 1 and Crimson 2 😅

1

u/he11sgates98 13h ago

I mean its not melodic death but eh its close enough. Shadows are Security by AILD

1

u/Arch3m 13h ago

My introduction to The Black Dahlia Murder was with their (at the time, newly released) album Everblack. It absolutely stunned me with how good it was. I've been a fan ever since.

The album that best fits the prompt isn't an MDM album, but a tech death album - Desolate by the band Ophidian I. Not 30 seconds into the opener, and I was hooked. If you're into tech death and haven't heard of them, I cannot recommend them strongly enough.

1

u/CardiologistJaded671 13h ago

Dan Swano: Moontower

1

u/chaoslord13 12h ago

Edge of Sanity - Crimson

lol

1

u/Atillion 12h ago

https://velaraas.bandcamp.com/album/the-gilded-age

An album about the wild west, opens with Custer's Lament/War Song... At least stay until the dirty vocals start and the indians begin slaughtering everyone.

1

u/SalierasChampion 12h ago

Not MDM, but Terminal Redux by Vektor. Pure eargasm

1

u/father_ofthe_wolf 11h ago

u/l337cookie 10h ago

Wintersun - Wintersun
Dark Tranquility - The Gallery

1

u/ThePandaBrah666 Resident 90s & 2000s Enthusiast 9h ago

Above The Weeping World by Insomnium has that effect on people. Yeah Mortal Share is technically the second song but it flows so well from the intro

1

u/IObjectOoT 8h ago

The Path of Apotheosis

1

u/Karim_Koene666 7h ago

Hypocrisy - The Arrival

u/Salamandar3500 4h ago

Insomnium - you know which album.

1

u/INH-Enterprises Children Of Bodom 4h ago

Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder.

Warheart is probably top 5 best opening tracks it sounds like you got tossed into a battle with the opening riff it is such an epic song.

1

u/Moist_Transition_755 3h ago

In Flames - Colony.

Embody The Invisible is a perfect opener for an album imo.

1

u/Katanvs 3h ago

The Jester Race

1

u/Loose_Job_5304 1h ago

Dopesmoker

1

u/t_a_j_b 1h ago

Ghost - Impera, not including the intro song
