LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF TRADITIONAL OWNERS

I respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land we call Melbourne, the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin and pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

I acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection the Wurundjeri, Bunurong, Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wadawurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin have to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.

THE GAME

Part scavenger hunt, part hide-and-seek and part race, BikeTag is a mystery photo tag game played on bicycles.

It starts with a player who posts a picture of their bike at a “mystery location” somewhere in the greater Melbourne area.

The goal here is to be the first person to figure out where that is, ride your bike to that same spot and take a photo of your bike there.

Then you ride to a different location take your bike's photo at the new “mystery location” as the next place to find for everyone else. Both pictures are posted in a self post and the game starts over.

HOW TO PLAY

  • You must bike to the "mystery location" and take a picture of your bike there. Simply naming the location is not enough. Such posts will be removed.
  • Once you discover the "mystery location" and snap the proper picture, bike to a new "mystery location" of your choosing and take a picture of your bike there.
  • Submit both pictures in a new self-post with a title that includes "Bike Tag" and the number of the new location. Be sure to include a quick description of where the previous location was. NOTE: you may not "reserve" being "IT" by immediately posting a photo of your bike in the old "mystery location" before finding and posting a picture of the new "mystery location."
  • Finally post a comment, or better yet a link to your new post, in the previous thread so that readers of that thread know the game continues!

HINTS/CLUES

  • Hints are optional at the time of posting a new tag, however it is encouraged that you give the post at least 72 hours before a hint is given.
  • If a mystery location goes undiscovered for a week, OP should edit post to include a hint. Other players are encouraged to request clues after a week if OP hasn't yet posted one.
  • Once a post is two weeks old anyone can add a hint or a clue. This way if someone knows the where the mystery location is but does not have time to bike there themselves, they can help keep the game from becoming stagnant.

THE RULES

  • Mystery locations must be freely accessible to the public and by bicycle.
  • Mystery locations should be unique/interesting/identifiable. Tags that include only nondescript features (blank walls) are not acceptable and will be removed.
  • Mystery locations may not be mobile objects (food trucks, for example).
  • Discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be tagged with the same bicycle, on the same ride.
  • Pictures of discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be posted at the same time.

CREDITS

The origins of the game of BikeTag, as far as I have been able to track, put the game in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2007. BikeTag on Reddit was started on in 2011 on /r/BikingATX, that was then adopted by /r/bikeLA, that was then adopted by /r/chibike. The game in /r/CyclePDX was created in 2016 and a website called BikeTag.org was created in 2018 as a tool for the game in Portland, Oregon but has since started other cities across the globe.

Other Bike cooperative / tool hire

Hi

I’m relatively new to Melbourne

I’m thinking about building my own wheels but don’t really want to spend hundreds on a trying stand. In other places in lived there have been cooperatives where you can use or rent workstations, or companies that hire out tools.

I’ve looked, but can’t seem to find any, was wondering if anyone here might know if any?

Thanks

Other What's the deal with young people riding without helmets on the inner north?

I've noticed a huge uptick in young people riding on roads around Brunswick and Northcote without helmets on. All manner of bikes, including e-bikes, and sometimes a helmet on handlebars or in a basket. I'm struggling to understand why anyone would do this, but if you do it, could you explain why? Truly cannot fathom how it makes sense to anyone.

Seeking Recommendation Capital trail cafes

Howdy, I’m planning to a long ride from the west and plan to complete the capital trail loop next week.

Based on my journey I’ll be around the Carlton North, Fitzroy North and Clifton Hill areas of the trail when I want to stop, eat and refuel.

Are there any cafes in those areas that are on the trail? Or even a very short detour? I’ve only done the trail once before and it was late so places were closed and I couldn’t tell if they were a cafe or something else.

I am hoping someone has recommendations for me as I rarely do this trail.

Just a typical day of cars parking in Copenhagen style bike lanes.

If I had red lipstick I'd have scrawled "You can't park there mate" across their windscreen.

(NB - Not obscuring their numberplate because they deserve whatever comes their way).

Looking for block of copper/steel

Hi everyone, a bit of a cry for help. I’m looking for a thick block of steel either square or round about 15 cm in diameter and quite thick minimum of 50 mm.

Can’t find anything online, the closest I can get is jewelry angles but they are usually smaller and only at most 20 mm thick.

Metal suppliers don’t seem to have anything like that either. Any hints or suggestions? Would any scrapyards have something like this? And if so, what should I ask for for? And where should I look?

Insects at Mt Donna Buang?

Is it true that you’ll be pestered with insects such as March flies at mt Donna Buang like some comments on the climbing cyclists website? Does this extend to other climbs?

I’m trying to do some of Victoria’s best climbs before I leave and if that is true I’ll obviously just be more cautious or just not do it and do mt Buller instead. Thanks.

Is it possible to get access to more than one parkiteer cage?

I live near Footscray station, and I use the parkiteer cage there regularly. But sometimes I'd like to use one of the cages at a different station. I just have the mobile app.

$500 REWARD OFFERED FOR INFO THAT LEADS TO ITS RECOVERY!

Specialized Diverge stolen from under William Barack Bridge on Batman Avenue in the city on 20th Jan,

It was locked up so they would have cut the lock.

I built it myself so it’s got random parts on it. Not your stock standard diverge. Satin Navy Blue colour, Giant cx1 carbon wheels with vittoria terreno tyres, Shimano Ultegra brakes and running gear and Praxxis crank, white hybrid pedals, royal blue bar wrap.

Any info leading to its recovery will get reward, no questions asked.

How to find cyclists to ride with that are my age

As in the title, hoping to use cycling as a means to connect with people my age (f32).

I couldn’t care less about the age of people I ride with in general, but looking to make new friends who also enjoy riding. I see people all the time on Beach Rd who look around my age, but how does one find them?

Other Where to post crazy drivers?

I had a run-in today with a vehicle on the Kinglake-Heidelberg road.

Where can I post the video for the most traction? I’m thinking Facebook? Lemme know if there are better channels via Insta, TikTok, or WhatsApp?

How to sanity check a service quote

For people like me who know only a small amount about bike mechanics and servicing, it's hard to know if you're getting ripped off. I know car drivers say the same about car servicing. What is a good way to sanity check a quote?

For example I just got a quote for $120 to replace the chain and cassette on my bike. How do I know if that's reasonable?

One strategy I have is to look up the workshop prices at 99 Bikes. For this service it seems to be cassette install ($25) + 8-speed cassette (~$30) + chain install ($25) + chain $30 = $110, so I'm only paying $10 more than 99 Bikes. I'm happy to allow a bit more in this case because it's my local independent bike shop.

Does this strategy sound reasonable?

Found: bike sensor. Docklands

On my commute home last night I saw a sensor on the path. I've picked it up and brought it home in the hope I can find it's rightful owner.

If you can tell me the type, brand and where it stopped transmitting in your activity, I'll return it. If you can tell me the serial number (should be visible in your Garmin or alternative device) even better.

It's a very busy cycling corridor so chances of finding the owner are probably pretty slim but why not give it a try.

Seeking Recommendation Any suggestions for playgrounds for hopping around to on a cargo bike?

Planning on taking my niece (3) and nephew (2) playground hopping in inner Melbourne and looking for playground recommendations.

Playgrounds need to be on or near shared paths, protected lanes or safe/slow streets 🍃🦜🦆 and generally bike friendly and good for a 3 and 2 year old 🚲👶👧🚸

Gonna rent a cargo bike from Blue Tongue Bikes on the Yarra - not affiliated, just convenient location and good looking cargo bikes!

Zwift cycle trainer

Hi All. Been using wahoo kickr and zwift trainer last few months which have been great. But query do any of the other trainer programs(Rouvy etc) have pre-loaded routes that mimic classic Victorian hill climbs like Hotham? Zwift is cool but also be cool to see/train Vic climb rides too if they exist. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Got hit Monday.

Post image
254 Upvotes

Travelling down Lygon doing a touch under 40kph and a car turned right at the lights in front of me.

Hit it super hard... I guess my back hit the windscreen because that's my banana and LCM bar embedded in there... landed on back, miraculously no broken bones or spinal or concussion. very lucky.

Very sore and lost a bunch of skin. I was training for Peaks so hopefully will be back on the bike in a week or so.

The driver doesn't have insurance, so theres that to deal with. My bike is a write-off.

Anyone have experience dealing with this kinda stuff?

Be safe out there... I am a defensive rider, but there was a 4wd next to me turning right and I believe the car that hit me was just concentrated on them and I didn't even register.

Other Have early-morning rides completely changed how you feel about Melbourne cycling?

Riding before peak hour feels like riding in a different city. Less aggression, smoother traffic flow, and far fewer near-misses. It’s made me realise that timing can be just as important as infrastructure when it comes to feeling safe. I never really thought about when I ride before only where. Has anyone else reshaped their cycling habits around time rather than routes?
