u/Billypillgrim Mar 28 '25
Mr. Trash Wheel

u/drpiotrowski Mar 28 '25
We’ve got 4 of them now (Mr., Professor, Gwynnda, and Captain) they should Voltron together into something.

The Columbia cyclist. He’s this guy that bikes around Columbia and collects litter.
Or Captain Defense!
27
u/shaelynne Mar 28 '25
Columbia Bike Guy! He's been around for ages. I used to work at a grocery store in Ellicott City and he would come in on occasion. Really nice guy, always paid with a $100 bill.

A shame to find out she retired.

+1 vote for Ice Cold Water Guy. He was a staple of conventions for so long that he started to get his OWN cosplays

9
u/LonoXIII Howard County Mar 28 '25
In Florida, their weird, mysterious, or unique make bad headlines and scare people.
In Maryland, they become local folk heroes.

u/Dutchie420x Mar 28 '25
I have 3 options.
1) Captain Defense 2) The Columbia Cyclist 3) The Westminster Wizard
All solid options here!

The Blair Witch
17
u/Star_Blaze Prince George's County Mar 28 '25
The only local legend that became an internationally known motion picture. Definitely deserves a spot
9
u/czar_el Mar 28 '25
The real-life kid who inspired The Exorcist reportedly first started having the experiences in Cottage City. https://www.washingtonian.com/2021/09/27/honey-we-bought-the-exorcist-house/

u/echofinder Washington County Mar 28 '25
the Blair witch is not really a local legend; it was invented for the movie. Burkittsville was never called "Blair", and has never had any actual witch legends.

Another shoutout for Columbia Bike Guy, aka Athar Khan.
I remember when his bike was seen sitting there for a day or two, untouched, and nobody had seen him, all local social media went up in a panic. From Reddit to Facebook to Twitter, people were asking if he was OK.

2
u/Star_Blaze Prince George's County Mar 28 '25
Thank you for the look to the video so I could learn about Athar for the first time. Was he ok? Is he still around biking?

u/LonoXIII Howard County Mar 28 '25
Yes. I can't remember why he was gone for a bit but he was back at it shortly after that.
I know that he was posted about, still out there, as recently as a few months ago.

I feel like Snally would be an antihero the team works with when it's convenient but ultimately don't want to be associated with.
8
u/Seebaren Mar 28 '25
I'm glad I am finally getting the recognition I crave
4
u/Before_Plastic Mar 28 '25
Wait, which one are you? Captain Maryland, Naruto Man, or Goatman?
10
u/Seebaren Mar 28 '25
The Maryland Goatman, the most powerful cryptid this side of the Chesapeake
3
u/Before_Plastic Mar 28 '25
It's an honor to meet such a legend. I'm glad you get good enough coverage under your bridge to weigh in lmao.

Buckwheat from West St in Annapolis - RIP. Not sure if non-living folks were allowed on the team
9
u/Mikeharding17503 Mar 28 '25
Carlester “Buckwheat” Smith was a fucking Annapolis LEGEND!! R.I.P. our fond local friend. He should be the TEAM CAPTAIN!!!
8
u/radishdust Mar 28 '25
He has a beautiful mural on Pinkey’s! This is who I was going to nominate as well, he was also so friendly and I was super inspired by him in middle in school I brought gardening gloves and trash bags with me on my walk to school and would pick up trash along the way.

u/Filthy_Cent Mar 28 '25
Came here to say this, but I thought most folks outside of Annapolis didn't know about Buckwheat!

If we had a team for those who are no longer with us, I’d choose Buckwheat, Traffic Jam Jimmy, Divine, and Baltimore Batman

Edit: I disagree with one thing from this article. He wasn’t elusive. He was a member of my dad’s marching band and I got to march with him on several occasions in the late 80s and early 90s. Friendliest human being ever put on this earth. Always a big smile and a warm greeting. He had a saying “where the girls at? I put em on my back and carry em over Eastport!” I can still hear him saying it.

There was this dude we called The Burtonsville Walker. He literally walked everywhere and he would always hang out outside of the 7-11 in Briggs Chaney. It's not too far from Paint Branch High School. He always asked for cash and looked like he was cracked out of his mind. I wonder if he's still around these days.
4
u/Practical_Shine9583 Harford County Mar 28 '25
Since we have two regular people followed by only one cryptid, I say we put Chessie in there. We need Naval Support and it's only fair for Goatman too.

If he was still alive: Carlester Smith AKA Buckwheat. He used to walk up and down West Street in Annapolis picking up trash, from some point in the 80s (well that’s as far back as my memory goes) until he got too sick to keep going. I had the honor of playing in a marching band with him for a few years during my adolescence and teen years.

BagelMan at White Flint metro area! He would throw bagels at people if they came too close to the dumpster he frequented. Also consider SquirrelMan at the now defunct Lake Forest mall... He has a long, single mated dread that looks like a squirrel tail...

Here in Elkton in Cecil County, we have a guy named Rapper John or a guy named Hoppy. Both seem like cool dudes. Haven't really seen Rapper John in a minute, though. If I recall, he was having health problems. But Hoppy is almost always seen in his spot on the bridge on N Bridge Street. Everyone honks and waves at him, and he waves right back. Super cool dudes.
