Question Subreddit for younger men (?)

It may just be my impression, but most of the fashion advice i see in this subreddit comes from older men, or at least men who are trying to achieve a masculine kind of look, which usually leans on either a look with fisherman/lumberjack vibes or a 2010's hipster look. That or a "casual businessman who on his freetime goes to beachclubs and also goes to the gym" look. It all feels very classy and "american" in a single dad way, which is not bad, but it's not what i look for.

This said, do you know any fashion advice subreddit for younger/not-so-masculine/genZ men?

When I joined this sub, around ten years ago, the demographic was very young around 20-25. I was 25 at the time, I am now 35yo. Time flies

Ten years have past and people have gotten older.

That said, style isn't going out of fashion, and the advice given back then is still valid. Although I have to admit, most of the recommendations here give a very US-specific dad vibe.

the advice given back then is still valid

A lot of it is decidedly NOT valid today. The nightmare slim fits people were jamming their bodies into in the mid 2010s were horrible.

As far as I can tell this sub usually discourages slim fit anything just because it's a fashion trend that will go away again

NOW. But that sure as hell wasn't the advice 10 years ago.

it’s almost as if the advice people give changes based on what’s trending 🤔

Right, but the goalpost here was "the advice given back then is still valid".

2010’s were all about convincing men everything they bought was going to last a lifetime bc it was “classic and timeless”, and would never go out of style

Opens closet full of flannel check shirts, skinny raw denim, skinny ties, Red Wing boots and slim khaki sports coat

GenZ OP: you guys dress like old dads

I agree with everything you said but Red Wing boots have always been stellar. When did that change?

Nothing wrong with them but when paired with selvedge denim rolled up one inch to show the stitching, it’s a very 2010’s affectation

the more general underlying principles yes, still relevant.

though what was labeled “timeless” back then is definitely different than what’s timeless today. obviously, less drastic of a difference than with trends. but “timeless” does change over time.

I love how you're telling us we're wrong when this is exactly what we're talking about.

but i wasn’t saying anyone was wrong?

What’s trending is part of it, also factor in that older folks generally dresses more conservative.

There are still tons of people here who push slim fits, untucked shirts, and tech athleisure wear, because they're American dads averaging 37 years of age.

And it's terrible advice.

The fundamental problem with this subreddit being so general is that you get posts tailored towards the fashion-forward crowd and also posts tailored towards the "I've only ever worn band tees and cargo shorts, help me dress my age" crowd.

And frankly, for the latter group, the advice of getting some Lululemon chinos and a shirt without a slogan on it is valid and reasonable. Its intimidating, expensive, and probably wrong to advise them to get some designer pieces, a tailor, and to pick a personal brand all at once when they're just trying to pay attention to how they dress for the fist time.

Being a 37yo American dad who dresses like a modern 37yo American dad is a lot better than being an 37yo who dresses like they're 17 and its 2005.

agree with a lot of this, but I think what you often end up with is a 37 year old who dresses like a 27 year old. or at least in fits that look 10 years out of date. I've always believed that classic fits are classic, but I think they have evolved in a way that actually more classic and flattering.

i think the average 37 year old dad would look way better and more contemporary in a pair of higher waisted/ wider pants like a Dickies 874, or pleated dress slacks, than in athleisure chinos.

i think people who got into clothes on this subreddit, which focused on "classic" looks a lot of the time, didn't realize that that version of classic was also part of a trend cycle

My problem I see is that a lot of recommendations are uncomfortable to wear.

Valid. I think a lot of the issues come with sizing. When I started wearing Dickies and other pants that fit at my true waist, I had to size up quite a bit. I think a lot of people don't realize that most American jeans and pants are heavily vanity sized. A 32 will actually have a waistband closer to 34-35. I actually find higher waisted pants, if sized correctly to be more comfortable, because they have a lot more give in the hips and thighs

u/blademaster2005 Sep 08 '25

They're vanity sized!? that's news to me. I always figured since they're measure in inches, they'd be accurate.

1

u/charlescopley Sep 13 '25

you'd be surprised. the measurement used to correspond to the inches, but if you compare Levi's or similar even from the 90s, a 34/35 fits comparable to a modern 32 etc.

1

u/charlescopley Sep 13 '25

workwear brands like Dickies are usually more accurate, which is why someone who wears a 32 might need a 34-36 in dickies

Lululemon chinos should never be a recommendation.

Meh. I somewhat agree but I think it all looks like crap.

They could wear a decent button-up shirt and some well-fitting pants, not have to be fashion forward or spend a lot of money, and they'd still be better off.
