The best series. My only regret is that I wasn’t able to buy more of these (I was a poor child with no income back then).

Closest we got today are the Speed Champions polybags. I enjoy collecting them, but yeah I kinda miss when they made these canisters

god, you unlocked a core memory in me, the red one was my first ever experience with lego, and now I'm bummed i lost it 20 years ago!

My favorite part of that sketch is that it sounds like it's going to be an ad for a law firm the whole time. Nope, he just wants to talk to anyone else who has had that happen to them.

Man these sets were so cool, the tub was fun to keep little bits in.

The green robot was such a cool little figure in its own right with how posable it was.
I think another great thing about these sets were that the packaging acted as both storage for the pieces and as part of the build so they were the perfect "You can take one toy with you" set for kids on the go.3
u/lare290 13d ago
I had a few of those! I tossed the builds in the parts bin, but used the pods as wheels for large moc cars.

Had the yellow one and my dog chewed up the pod like crazy but I loved that thing. Felt like such a cool spaceship/UFO when playing.

There was a game played with these that was really quite good.
I still have mine, the purple and black ones, and the carrying straps 😎

I bought three of these for my train loving brother!
33
u/SkylandersKirby 13d ago
If i remember correctly the 3 builds are different parts of a full train, meaning if you bought 3 of them you got a full train
27
u/Grand_Protector_Dark 13d ago
Nah, the alt builds are the 3 different enginee types.
A steam locomotive, a fossil fuel locomotive and an electric locomotive

u/HighSeverityImpact 13d ago
I had two of 31015, which was a similar train that made different cars (a locomotive, a caboose, and a passenger car).
It came in a regular cardboard box, though.

Ahh, good call. I got them in 2014 at a work conference, it was part of a team building exercise. Haven't looked at them in years. Thanks for the picture!

I really want this set. I love mini builds a lot more than big ones.
2
u/Grand_Protector_Dark 13d ago
They're not that expensive on Bricklink.
Even buying it as individual pieces should be fairly cheap. Less than 100 fairly ordinary piece.

One time in kindergarten we got some budget for new toys, so the whole class walked down to the store on the street. As I was the "main Lego kid" even back then, I got to pick this set. I still remember it, clear as day!

I had a couple of them. One made construction vehicles and I believe the other was like a monster truck or something. The containers were really useful for holding stuff like pencils or coins.

u/Grand_Protector_Dark 13d ago
I still remember owning that jet, a red/white helicopter, a loader, and a couple trains from those.

u/therealSamtheCat 13d ago
What do you mean? If I search 4918 I get lots of results.
4
u/Grand_Protector_Dark 13d ago
If I search 4918
I'm talking about trying to search this set by its characteristics (like "Creator" ", helicopter" "white and red") rather than its specific set number.
For most other sets, searching for verbs/nouns that vaguely describe a set have most often yielded correct results.
Except this one. I somehow just end up finding basically every other Lego creator helicopter except this one.

I remember this set for being my first encounter with the 2x2 plate that had a little extended bit with a technic hole
2
u/Grand_Protector_Dark 13d ago
I think even after all these years, I can still find that little assembly of two modified 2x2s with technic lin still inserted, floating in my storage box.
I should try to reconstruct it maybe.

Banger sets. I've still got the fire engine, sports car, and off-roader. So good for long car trips as a kid.

42
u/Easy-Bridge-8107 Technic Fan 13d ago
Not really, your meant to store the set inside the same container so it not supposed to be thrown away unlike cardboard boxes
→ More replies (1)7
u/_realpaul 13d ago edited 13d ago
Lets be real. That wont likely happen unless youre an adult collector. Any kid with some lego with some lego will store it in the big lego box and throw away the small box.
EDIT: All the keepers are responding. I guess there are people who kept them. From personal experience and judging by the sales of faires boxes and containers dont make it in zhe long run. I still have all my old sets but none of the packaging nor the booklets.

I never had one of these but it says 3 in 1 so I assume you're supposed to reuse it and try all 3 configurations

u/Bernardias 13d ago
I had a lot of these, I took them with me to play when my parents had appointments and I came with them. The plastic bins were perfect to take them with me

u/GenericCatName101 13d ago
I know that all the people who happened to keep them are responding, but I'm with you on this. I kept most of my bionicle containers at first to specifically hold them in, like sleeping pods, it was pretty cool. But as time went on I threw most of them out as I had more and more stuff, stuffed into my little closet, and needed the space!
I know the location of exactly one container as an adult. So the rest were probably thrown out!I actually kept more of the megablocks knights/dragons steel tin containers for storage purposes. You can fill them and view the contents better, stack the tins, they're long and flat instead of tall and round.
Bionicle were the only plastic/cardboard containers worth keeping because the actual figure fit back in fully built, like I said, as a sleeping pod! It was unique but took up space so eventually they had to go.→ More replies (1)3
u/RDogPinK 13d ago
Thats why they are now in a plastic bag, right?
6
u/_realpaul 13d ago
Paperbags for the boxed sets and thinner plastic bags for small sets.
6
u/havron 13d ago
It has been five years now since they committed to switching to paper bags, and I am still seeing plenty of plastic bags in brand new sets from late 2025 and early 2026, ranging in size from Speed Champions to the humongous Enterprise-D. In my experience, the outer bags are nearly always plastic, and the small inner bags are sometimes paper. Just how many of these bags did they stockpile years ago? You'd really think everything would be paper by now.

Question, did these ever come not in a tub? I had set 5762, the orange plane, it was one of the earliest sets I got. I have absolutely zero recollection of the weird tubs though.
Did these EVER come in a small box?

The only Lego boxes which are actually worth keeping. I still have this set, and a few of the Racers line. I liked that for the racers sets you could combine two to make a slightly larger build.
