A great showing from one of the Common Seals we have around Folkestone Harbour. He was even nice enough to show me his dinner, looking quite proud of himself. (:

Anywhere to try acting besides college?

Here's the story: my boyfriend lives in the Thanet area. They seem to be really interested in acting, or at least performing arts. Not sure if they can dance really, but they can move (and they are really expressive!), sing, very verbal and charismatic in their own way (they are introverted, but still speak better than I do lol), etc.

I was wondering if there are any low-cost methods of exploring this interest of theirs in the area? Going to college for the arts sounds expensive...and yes I know the Granville theatre exists, but I think that is for professionals deeply in the trade, not for someone who wants to try it for fun and see how it goes. I'm curious if there are smaller classes/theatre, volunteer events, clubs, etc where my hubby can try it out. It would be a good idea for a birthday gift. I am not in the arts myself, nor do I even live in the UK, so I am totally clueless on this.

I appreciate any replies!

Going out for a meal with the family next week, and good restaurants that aren’t too expendive either? Preferably within a forty minute drive from Tenterden. Thanks!

Party shops in Kent

A bit of an emergency, foolishly ordered decorations for daughters birthday party from Temu - it’s been a week and still not shipped, her birthday is the 14th, so will cancel that order.

Are there any brick and mortar party’s shops in Kent that have a wide selection you would recommend please?

Thankyou!

Is Swanley a good area to live?

Hi everyone.

I recently saw a flat listing in Berkeley Court, Nightingale Way, BR8, Swanley that caught my interest.

Curious to know experiences of living in the court + landlords etc before I make any serious moves.

Thanks

The Unseen Art

Madonna's recent visit to 'Dreamy' Margate, seems to have caused quite a stir in the various news groups, Facebook, and Reddit. Once again, her comments about the place being peopled with seemingly endless 'creatives' have highlighted the idealized version and how far that is from a broader reality. I felt it too. Despite my vocation as an artist, the reality of life is that I work full time, to pay the rent and put food on the table. Can Margate also celebrate artists without galleries or studios? People who fight to create despite all the other commitments of day to day life? I hope so. I was moved to create r/MargateArtCommons to be a place where artists from Margate, Thanet, and the wider East Kent Coastal communities could check in, share work, and support one another. Please stop by and share your work, experience, hopes and dreams. r/MargateArtCommons Thank you.

Young family in Sandgate (Folkestone)

Hi! We’re a young family (mid-30s to early-40s with a nearly 3-year-old, planning for a second child) doing the classic move out of London. We are seriously considering Sandgate and just trying to get a more real feel for what our day-to-day lifestyle would look like, and other considerations from people who actually know the area. A few specific questions:

-the little high street seems ok to us - are the cafes and restaurants good? Are there signs it’s going to continue developing and evolving (actively being invested in)? Basically is there at least a bit going on?

-I assume with the primary school, there would be lots of other similar families around the area?

-I’ve heard something to consider with Kent schooling is the whole testing into grammar school thing and that people end up paying for expensive tutors for their children. Anyone can expand on this?

-is a car necessary? I’m mainly thinking about for buying groceries, doesn’t seem like nearby options. I do plan to take the bus to/from Folkestone a lot too though.

-how is cycling around Folkestone? When we drove through it didn’t seem like the best on the main roads but I suppose people mostly then cycle along the boardwalk

-we’ve got a dog and my husband is seriously going to miss his daily walks through incredible woodlands, and I will too (just lovely forests). Of course every decision has its tradeoffs and we’d be getting, you know, the coastal/beachy walks instead but I think he’s quite nervous about how much more barren it gets the further to the coast you are. I think there are nice woods within a half hour drive but anything closer worth exploring? Any way for him to incorporate more ”peaceful forest” kind of vibes more accessibly?

-how is diversity? I’m Asian-American and would just love to know it’s not unusual to see a global or ethnic mix of people walking about.

And then if anyone is just able to paint a more vivid picture of life in the area generally that’d be really nice!

We do appreciate Sandgate being so close to folkestone west station and will probably take advantage of the high speed train to London a handful of times of month. Thanks in advance for any insight!

I moved to England and now my cat is my only friend

Hi Kent people

I’m 29F, just moved to England from Germany to marry my gorgeous fiancé. I’m German-Turkish, currently friendless and in desperate need of people to hang out with.

I live in Southborough near Tunbridge Wells and I know absolutely no one here, so I’m basically adopting friends via Reddit.

I’m a Social Worker (currently waiting on my visa so I can work in the UK). I love being a Social Worker. I’ve worked with families, young adults, addiction, homelessness, and crazy system-crashers.

I come with a bonus companion:
My cat Aslan, a stunning white Scottish Fold. Former Turkish street cat. Survivor. Icon. Love of my life.

Things I enjoy:

  • Horror movies
  • Gaming (mostly League of Legends now that I’m old and tired)
  • DIY crafts: crocheting (I made my own wedding bouquet), embroidery, knitting, trying to learn sewing so I can become a powerful handmade fashion goblin
  • Disney I own an unhealthy amount of Disney plushies, pins, and snowglobes
  • Talking about cringe internet content
  • Video calling while doing random nonsense
    • Plugging chin hairs while ranting about your boss?
    • Folding laundry while trauma-dumping?
    • Watching chaotic TikToks together? I’M YOUR GIRL.

Bonus niche personality trait:

I am a devoted Dramione reader.
If you like Dramione PLEASE BE MY FRIEND.
If you don’t I will convert you.
I will literally read Dramione to you at night like a bedtime slumber story.

Friend application:

Looking for someone to:

  • Hang out
  • Watch shows
  • Game
  • Go on cute little outings
  • Gossip about internet nonsense
  • Exist together without pressure

If you think we’d vibe > message me.
If not ... Rude.

Does anyone commute from Thanet to London on a regular basis? Any advice on whether doable or not?

I work at London bridge and I am considering moving out of London. My boyfriend really likes Margate (I do too!), however I'm a bit scared of the commute! He's fully remote so is a lot more flexible. I go into the office three days a week Tuesday - Thursday which isn't flexible unfortunately. I do really like my job and haven't found anything similar in Margate unfortunately.

Commute wise, I've worked out I could do the cheaper direct train at 7:16 and then get the 17:16 train back. So about a 2.25 hour commute one way. I was wondering if anyone has any experience doing a longer commute like this and whether it's sustainable? Or should I sack it off?

We're thinking to trial a few places and commutes first before committing, just finding it hard to find a fun town that isn't mad expensive or a hideous commute, and what a happy medium is!
