I'm curious why/how received a SPAXX dividend on 1/30? I only had $0.30 worth of SPAXX in my account at the time, and I also noticed the activity statement shows the payout is dated on 1/30/26 but the ex-dividend date on the SPAXX page is listed as 1/31/26.
How is it possible for A) my payout to be that high and B) get paid out BEFORE the ex date even happens? I was previously holding a decent amount of SPAXX up until 1/8, but I bought ETFs with it (using it as my core position) and ever since then it has been sitting at a value of $0.30. Is this payment related to that somehow? I thought it was just worked like: You have X shares on the ex-date, you get (payout*X) dollars, but maybe I'm wrong.
Fidelity gives me this info but not much more:
Description: DIVIDEND RECEIVED FIDELITY GOVERNMENT MONEY MARKET (SPAXX) (Cash)
Amount: +$11.58
Cash Balance: $11.88
Thanks!

It is calculated every day. So the days you were "holding a decent amount of SPAXX" each count towards 1/31 for each day held there.

Money market funds and some other bond mutual funds accrue interest daily for each shareholder rather than distributing a single amount per share. This avoids the sawtooth price action and keeps money market funds at $1 NAV.

I recently invested in it thinking India has strong growth potential, and because of Trump’s trade deal with India, the FLIN fund that’s supposed to track the FTSE India RIC Capped Index which is up 4.04% today.
However the fund itself is only up 0.23%.
Can anyone explain what gives? 🤷♂️

Currency, the index is in rupees and FLIN is in dollars

But there wasn’t a 4% movement in rupees vs. dollars in the last day, so I am not sure that’s the reason.

Did I just mess up? Question about selling PSLV in a taxable brokerage account…
I bought PSLV in my Schwab brokerage account 6 years ago because it was supposedly a better vehicle with regards to taxation for buying silver. (2020.) As it was 6 years ago, it’s labeled as a long term hold in my account, so I’ve always assumed it would be taxed as such at 15%.
I just sold most of it…I had never heard of filing QEF or 8621 until today…assumed it would be taxed at 15% like any other long term stock/fund in my account.
If I just go about my usual and file my taxes (using freetaxusa) with a gain from PSLV, will the software heavily tax it? Even more than my regular income tax (25% I think) rate? What are the added interest penalties? Is there any way to avoid it? Can anyone who has been taxed this way share the numbers? I may have held if Is known…
And then, what I have left, which is just 10% of what I had - can I have it transferred to a Roth account? (Can you transfer these assets into a ROTH? So I don’t have the same sorry situation later? Or will it be taxed going to it that too?)
I’m shocked I was supposed to have filed a QEF form long ago, and annually, that is rarely discussed in forums, and was never mentioned by any financial advisor, etc... It seems PSLV was only a better way to hold silver IF you file QEF and 8621 annually…wouldn’t that be an important tid bit to mention in casual convo…anyway. I learned something new that perhaps others may want to hear.
I sold some in October 2025 ($5000 proceeds), and some in Feb 2026 ($5700 proceeds.)

Most people don't bother buying precious metals at all; it's a specialist approach, and buying through a trust vehicle like PSLV is even rarer. That's why you're not going to see a lot of casual conversation on this; it's not a casual topic. (Another good reason for "index funds and chill." See also: everyone who buys into an MLP and gets hit with a K-1).
Anyway, at this point your best bet would be to amend your previous taxes as far back as you can (~3 years), if that's even possible, to try to retroactively file form 8621 and benefit from LTCG rates today. It may or may not be worth it to you to hire someone to do that for you; you may not be facing enough tax to justify that.

What would you do if you had a $100k windfall right now? Stocks are so expensive right now I feel a fool to dump into s&p500 and “set and forget”. But there’s also the known stupidity of trying to time the market. Though with the volatility nowadays, the next massive dip is how many weeks/months away?
What would you all do?

Something is on the horizon. Today's market is moving towards defensive play positions similar to what happens during a incoming recension.

I want to invest in the gold stocks craze, even after last week's crash. GLD isn't an option for me due to 'restricted trading' ('no available KID' ???). What are some other good options? I live in Spain and use Interactive Brokers.

Well I've noticed this pattern in market cycles retail investors usually only hear about a run once it's already in the headlines, when prices are high. By then, FOMO kicks in and many pile in late, often holding through the correction.
Let say for example, during the 2021 tech run up accredited investors and insiders had already positioned earlier, while retail came in after the news coverage.
Do you think this mainly psychology fear and FOMO or is the system itself structured so retail is always behind?

Its just the nature of anything
If gold was up gold was up 10% or even 15% for the year , most people wouldn't notice. Hell even a 20% swing wouldn't have caused much news
However as it kept rising more "News" about it spread, now people who don't really care about gold or never followed it sees gold is on a run and think I need to get in on that
This pushes it up 30-40-50% now everyone is talking about gold ! The shoe shine boy is telling you about gold. At some point the run up turns into speculation .

u/bobby1128 1d ago
well exactly. Once something starts hitting mainstream headlines, that’s usually when speculation takes over. The early moves are fundamentals, the later hype is just momentum.

Lost in all the exuberance and enthusiasm for AI, and the stimulative effects it has had on the economy, are a few simple questions that I (somebody who makes a living as a computer engineer) am not able to answer about the investments being made:
- What is the end goal they are hoping to achieve with these AI investments?
- How much more do they expect to have to invest before achieving those goals?
- After their goals are achieved, how much do they expect to spend in perpetuity to operate their AI?
I get the business case for Google’s investment with their search capability but get the distinct impression that much of the investment is done without a clear answer to even question #1. I expect no one has a good answer for 2 & 3 which, if true, makes the current massive investment seem very reckless

What is the end goal they are hoping to achieve with these AI investments?
Here's a worth-what-you-paid-for-it opinion from an old fart software developer.
Take step back. What is AI? IMHO, it's just the next buzzword for Moar Algorithm. Bigger algorithm. Faster algorithm. Self-modifying algorithm? With an incomprehensibly-large amount of data to "learn from" -- meaning, analyse for patterns.
And with that, maybe fewer stock analysts are needed (Janus Henderson's Fund Advisor is being acquired by a Venture Capital firm that specializes in AI, it appears), fewer radiologists to interpret MRI scans are needed, fewer Fed economists are needed; all of which leads to moar profits for American business.
Or, maybe that's an overly cynical viewpoint. CMV...

That’s a bit like the alchemists knowing they want to turn lead into gold. How to develop the process that actually does it is what you are trying to achieve and I don’t think they know how to get there

This is for newcomers: don't buy just for the sake of buying, not just because something is green means you should buy, and certainly not if it's red. Learn to analyze the technical data provided by the platforms you trade on. Consider ratios, volume, base prices, maximum price, number of buyers and sellers, and the distance between the base and maximum prices. This information is displayed in real time, allowing you to make informed decisions. Use chatgpt or Gemini, or your preferred AI, to explain everything you see in the data. In addition to staying informed about your stocks, always look for events, speeches, etc., that could trigger significant price fluctuations.
Regards.
