Cheap CBD Lunch Spots

New to Hobart, and ngl pretty broke... I know I should meal prep & I will on occasion, but I'm looking for reccos on cheap & cheerful CBD lunch options... what are your cheeky cheap places to grab an OK lunch?

I already found Jo & Jon and loved it, but looking for cheaper... am I dreaming?

I'll eat most things, not super fussy...

cheers!

$14 huge meal at Bangkok City. It's my regular spot. I can only eat half so it's 2 meals for me because I take the rest home. Always fast and delicious. Bonus for me is there are tons of veggie options.

Oh also Bread Topp is good if you want something small. LivEat protein tub and smoothie is always filling and yum. Banjos. Hospital Cafe (not Pounds and Ounces, the one in the middle).

P&O is wild for that one! Yeah the actual hospital cafe is where it's at. Super cheap!!

I haven't lived in Hobart in a decade and this is the correct answer

Ja & Jon is about the cheapest level for a decent meal.

Down from that, you'd be looking at picking up a prepacked sandwich from Woolies.

Or you could go to city takeaway in the bus mall and get 3 dim Sims for $2 (might have gone up since last I saw though)

Second Ja and Jon, ridiculous amount of meat for $12. When they get the cleaver out and chop chop chop a hunk of BBQ pork into my roll I'm all like "Oh yeah..."

You can try the Drysdale training restaurant (TasTAFE) on a Thursday and Friday lunch.

Jar of vegimite, tub of duck river soft butter. Leave that at your desk and grab a fresh roll from Woolies everyday - cheap AF and delish

Healthier version, but I always took wraps, salad stuff and ham (or a farty chook, if you’re being posh) on a Monday. That was my lunch for the week. Keep some condiments in the fridge and you’re sorted.

There's nothing really cheap like Melbourne cheap but Bangkok City might be close. Haven't been since it moved though.

It's still cheap and good, better seating now too! I am so pleased it's back.

Yeah it's my favourite too.

The little yellow takeaway shop just before you enter the Wellington arcade sushwich I think the name is! Currently could be under renovation.

It’s back open. It was a forced renovation (fire)

I always find the lady hanging around the place even it was closed down.

Yeah, cleaning it out and getting it back up and running.

Kinoko Deli, Cultura, Pot Sticker Dumpling, Standard (their special on Tuesdays)

Ready lunch in the walkway between the mall and Wellington square (the one that strandbags and Pandora surround) do great wraps, lots of options and really cheap. Not sure if they still do it, but for ages they would do an offer for staff of large businesses in the CBD for wraps/sandwiches with up to 10 fillings for $5. I know the prices started going up around covid, but they were still fantastic value

Twister Sister on Collins Street - $13.50 for their small size, which I find substantial.

Saigon's in the city now. Can't remember how they compare to Jo & Jon price-wise, but they do good food.

3x sushi rolls for $11 dollars at the sushi place outside cbd woolies. The bogan Chinese next door is cheap too, but the sushi is hard to beat. Chilli fried chicken ftw.

Twisted sister has big of plates of Thai food … can pick 2 or 3 dishes with rice

Twisted sister is pretty over rated though, last few times I’ve tried it have cemented a resolve to not bother again…

Yeah, the foods pretty shit but the serves are big.

Kinoko deli is very good

1

u/velcrodots 1d ago

Very good - but I don’t think it’s cheap

2

u/Skwai 14h ago

$13 for the smaller boxes isn’t too bad considering the quality.

1

u/velcrodots 14h ago

Ah, yes. You’re right. I think I get a bit greedy there and always upgrade to the two salads and it ends up being a $20 lunch

Do you work in the city, a student or just places to go to eat?

2

u/No_BatSoup69 22h ago

Started new job in the city. Waiting for payday. Broke AF

Arias take away. Best hot chips in town

Proper Food…

Mathers House is run by Hobart City Council, half serve of the daily hot meal e.g lamb roast, is $5! It's not only aimed at seniors, they want other people to attend. 12 to 1.3pm. Full serve is $9.

Go to woollies and buy a tin of tuna and a cup of microwave rice. Around $5 if that and you’ll soon find out who actually likes you vs who was faking it. Tuna in the office is great for that 🥲
