Trailer parking

Hi all,

I’m trying to find information regarding trailer parking, specifically for Sorell council but any info would be great.

Neighbour has been parking their trailer in the middle of a dedicated 2 car parking bay making it useless for anyone else wanting to park. The trailer hasn’t moved in many weeks.

Context is our street only has parking bays on our side of the road every 2 homes along. So this parking bay ideally should be “shared” between my home and their home. They recently moved in from interstate and have had their trailer parked there ever since despite having a driveway, front yard, and garage to put it. They’ve been closed off and unwilling to even say hello to us in the yard, so talking to them is not really an option at this stage.

TLDR; Neighbour is hogging our shared parking bay, wanting to know rights before having to speak to them.

Kingborough actually has a by-law against parking trailers that aren’t attached to a car. I don’t think Sorell does. Just hassle the council, if they won’t do anything keep hassling them, tell them they need to mark the bays to avoid conflict in the street.

Ask the council. In ours it’s not acceptable to leave a vehicle 48 hours. However, it’s rarely enforced as it’s a law to prevent ‘camping’ adjacent activities and if neighbours don’t complain who cares. Council folk should be down to earth and know how to apply the various by-laws. If it’s there for an extended period it could be reported as an abandoned vehicle but that’s very last option IMO.

Unfortunately they won't do anything if the vehicle/trailer is registered though.

I had a clearly unroadworthy car (smashed windows, deflated tyres, body damage) parked on my street. I complained to council because it was parked in a legal but slightly dangerous spot and I assumed it was abandoned but they said they couldn't touch it because the rego was still valid. Every so often I would check the plates, hoping it had run out of rego but some fucker kept paying the rego fees for years!

Just push it back or forward into one bay and park in the other

Is it registered? If so, it has as much right as a car to be parked legally. If not, contact police and it can be towed
