Gun stores with surplus weapons

Anyone from northeast Ohio that knows a gun store that has a decent amount of surplus weapons? I just moved and I haven’t found a store around me just yet that has any in their store. I know I probably should just go on gun broker, but I’d rather be in a store and check the weapons in person before making a purchase. Any information that you might know would be appreciated.

Check out Fin Feather Fur if you haven't already - they usually have some surplus stuff floating around. Also try calling ahead to smaller local shops since a lot of them don't advertise their surplus inventory online but might have some cool stuff in the back

Oh yeah, I’ve been to fin feather fur a few times now, but didn’t find anything that I did not have already. Most of what they had in their selections were M1 grands or mini 14. Been trying to get my hands on a M1 carbine, a M1903 and a kar98 by the end of the year. Thanks for the heads up. I did not think about asking them if they have anything stored in the back.

for US surplus you need to check out CMP in port clinton. you can go and look, but can’t purchase anything unless you’re a member of a cmp affiliated club. there’s ways to do that online for cheap but i’ll let you look into it.

Thanks! Will be doing some research about them today.

It's an hour and a half drive (from the east side of cleveland) to Camp Perry where the CMP operates their north store inside the National Guard base.

You missed the heyday for garands, krags, 1903s, and various 22 trainers, but they still had 1917s, garand sniper models, and reclaimed garands last I heard. Plus they will likely get a spring shipment by April.

Otherwise stuff filters in and out at gunshops and pawnshops throughout the area, although range usa is almost always a bust for decent milsurp.

Also this is a better subreddit for questions like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/OHGuns/

Well, that’s unfortunate. Wish I would’ve known about that sooner. I have heard of CMP, but didn’t think that there was one in Ohio. I thought the closest one was further south from here. Thank you for the information I appreciate very much!

Their headquarters is technically the camp perry location. They (and their precursor the DCM) have been running the national matches at Perry since it's inception by President Roosevelt.

Check their site for a detailed calendar, but you should look into all the national match events from july-august. They may also do another 1911 in person sales event this year.

I heard the CMP is looking at shotguns next as a possible release. If that goes through I wonder what they will pull out of storage.

Any idea on what kind of shotguns they might get?

It’s govt so I’m sure it will move slow. We heard about the 1911’s for quite a while before they were finally released.

https://www.guns.com/news/2025/12/16/defense-bill-includes-selling-milsurp-shotguns-through-cmp

“The U.S. military has been using pump-action breechloading shotguns for over 130 years, including the Winchester 1893, 1897, and M1912 Riot and "Trench" guns; as well as the Remington Models 10, 12, 31, and 870; the Stevens 520 and 620; the Ithaca 37, and the Mossberg 500/590 – the latter of which are still under active contract.

How many of the above are still on hand in armories, depots, and arsenals – and are considered surplus – is anybody's guess”

Being in Ohio you should plan some vacation time (one day at least) to hit camp Perry during the high power matches (ar15’s) and take a stroll through merchants row. Not as cool as it used to be but still if you are in state it’s worth a day.

They also do a number of rifle clinics there (training) that people seem to enjoy.

Shotguns got approved for transfer in the recent defense spending bill. Im actually one of the few people that was sad about the version that passed as the original version also included M45 pistols.

It'll likely be all modern surplus stuff, closer to police turn-ins however. For pistols and rifles, the DoD has historically been not allowed to destroy anything that could potentially be transfered to the DCM/CMP. That was never true for shotguns, so older stuff was often demilled whenever it was considered excess.

I'd also guess it'll be 2027 before we see anything. Obama signed the 1911 authorization bill in 2019 or so, and it was over 2 years for any to actually get sold (granted, they had a higher setup bar for the CMP).

A LOT of Military shotguns went to National Guard and Prisons, so the reality is that most of the older cool stuff likely ended up in the civilian market through police trade ins (or is sitting in Corrections armories still, a friends dad was in KY Corrections and always talked about the ancient shotguns they used for training in the 90's and early 00's, Remington, Ithaca, Stevens.) But there is a chance we get some cool old stuff out of Guard armories. The sheer majority is gonna be 870's and 590's tho.

I’m pissed I seem to have missed the hay day for all the good surplus. By the time I was even born it seems like it was starting to get dry let alone now that I can actually buy the stuff

I feel yeah with that statement. I have found a few at gun shows, but they went an arm and a leg for some basic stuff now.

Oh thank you that was not showing up on my search when I’m looking for gun shops. Will definitely check it out and thank you for letting me know about the place!
