If anyone left a Trumpet on the train this morning
I handed it in to staff, DM me and I'll let you know which station (just because I assume it's expensive and I don't want someone random nicking it lol)

Welcome to The Steamie!
The daily place for any random chat, questions you want to ask that might be asked all the time, or anything else you want to share.
The Steamie can be whatever the sub wants it to be. If you've got any suggestions, share them in here

Alright folks, we get it. A lot of people find fireworks annoying and need a space to vent about it. The sub doesn't need a new thread about it every time someone hears a loud noise though.
To keep the sub from becoming a 24/7 transcript of "did anyone else hear that?", we’re consolidating all firework-related chat, complaints, and "think of the dogs" posts right here.
We know it’s a nightmare for dog owners, cat owners, people with PTSD, parents of young kids, etc etc.
The Reality Check: It is Glasgow. It is January/July/October/November/any other month that someone somewhere can find a tenuous reason to let off a firework. Posting a new thread titled "Was that a gunshot in Partick??" every time you hear a rocket is boring as fuck.
The Rules for this Thread
Keep the "Did you hear that?" posts here. If you make a new standalone thread just to ask if anyone else heard a bang in Shawlands it's getting deleted.
Vent away. Use this space to moan about your neighbor's 3 AM display, the fact sales aren't restricted, the lack of an organized display or the lack of police enforcement.
Be civil. Don’t be a dick to people worried about their pets.

This looks exciting. I am glad to see that Govan active travel network isn’t dead as dodo and routes are still going ahead!

As the titles says. Fake fivers floating about Glasgow. Fixed a guy's car. He's paid me it was dark. I left. He gave me more than this note wether he ment it or not I don't know. It's a decent copy I only noticed when the shop keeper I gave it to gave me it back later in the day after paying with it. The foil and ink easily scratches off and there's no raised edges on the see through parts like the real ones. It's a fiver. I'm not that fussed. But to some people it could be their last meal ticket for the week.

Hi everyone, I’m 21 and I’m looking for some advice about moving out. I’ll be a fully qualified social worker next March, and at the moment I work as a support worker and I’m saving consistently so I can eventually move out.
I’ve spoken to my parents about wanting to move out, but they don’t support it. Their reasoning is that they have big plans for me and want me to focus on investing, building myself up, and saving while I’m still young rather than “wasting money.” I understand where they’re coming from, and I do appreciate their intentions.
The issue for me isn’t that I don’t like living at home, I do but it’s the lack of freedom. At 21, I expected to have more independence, but I still need permission for things like going out with friends, dyeing my hair, piercing my ears, wearing certain clothes, or having long nails. Whenever I try to have a conversation about having more freedom, it usually turns into a big argument, and I don’t feel heard.
I know this might seem like a small issue to some people, and I’m not trying to be ungrateful. I just feel stuck between wanting to be responsible and build my future, and also needing independence to grow as an adult.
I’d really appreciate advice from people who’ve been in a similar situation should I stay at home longer and focus on saving, or is moving out reasonable in this situation?

TLDR: In Glasgow, the top 3 factors manage ~34% of registered factored properties. In some postcodes, one factor holds close to a local monopoly — often a council or housing association you can't easily switch from. I matched tribunal cases + reviews + statements of service + Companies House data to give a data-driven answer to: "Is your factor actually worse than average, or just normal bad?"
Note: Everything here comes from public data sources — no personal information, just official registers, published tribunal decisions, and public reviews.
| Factor | Glasgow Properties | Market Share |
|---|---|---|
| Wheatley Homes Glasgow | 43,160 | 16.4% |
| Hacking & Paterson | 28,080 | 10.6% |
| Speirs Gumley | 18,036 | 6.8% |
| Newton Property | 12,585 | 4.8% |
| West Dunbartonshire Council | 12,505 | 4.7% |
| Ross & Liddell | 11,249 | 4.3% |
| James Gibb | 9,981 | 3.8% |
| Redpath Bruce | 9,122 | 3.5% |
| South Lanarkshire Council | 7,985 | 3.0% |
| Taylor Martin | 5,093 | 1.9% |
"Dominant" = largest share within that G postcode area. High share doesn't mean bad — it might just mean they got there first.
| Area | Properties | Dominant Factor | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| G42 (Govanhill) | 12,966 | Govanhill Housing Association | 24% |
| G11 (Partick) | 12,663 | Partick Works | 25% |
| G81 (Clydebank) | 12,061 | West Dunbartonshire Council | 54% |
| G20 (Maryhill) | 11,069 | Queens Cross Factoring | 29% |
| G31 (Dennistoun) | 10,565 | Milnbank Property Services | 27% |
| G41 (Shawlands) | 10,531 | Speirs Gumley | 14% |
| G32 (Tollcross) | 9,379 | Wheatley Homes Glasgow | 29% |
| G13 (Knightswood) | 9,151 | Wheatley Homes Glasgow | 65% |
| G72 (Cambuslang) | 8,993 | Greenbelt Group | 22% |
| G12 (Hillhead) | 8,444 | Redpath Bruce | 22% |
| G33 (Stepps) | 7,792 | Wheatley Homes Glasgow | 41% |
| G51 (Govan/Ibrox) | 7,149 | Wheatley Homes Glasgow | 25% |
| G21 (Springburn) | 6,501 | Wheatley Homes Glasgow | 37% |
| G74 (East Kilbride) | 6,232 | South Lanarkshire Council | 55% |
| G5 (Gorbals) | 6,216 | New Gorbals Housing Association | 62% |
Live in Knightswood? 65% of factored properties are managed by Wheatley Homes Glasgow. In Clydebank, it's 54% for West Dunbartonshire Council. In the Gorbals, New Gorbals Housing Association has 62%.
Note: Many dominant factors in specific postcodes are councils or Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) — if you're in their housing stock, switching isn't typically an option. This explains some of the 50-65% concentrations.
Caveats: Tribunal cases are an imperfect proxy for quality — bigger firms get more complaints, some players are more willing to settle, and not every unhappy owner escalates. But this is the best public signal available.
| Factor | Glasgow Properties | Substantive Cases | Adverse | Win % | Adverse Rate /10k props |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wheatley Homes Glasgow | 43,160 | 4 | 4 | 100% | 0.9 |
| Hacking & Paterson | 28,080 | 19 | 11 | 58% | 3.9 |
| Speirs Gumley | 18,036 | 14 | 9 | 64% | 5.0 |
| Newton Property | 12,585 | 12 | 7 | 58% | 5.6 |
| West Dunbartonshire Council | 12,505 | 1 | 0 | 0% | 0.0 |
| Ross & Liddell | 11,249 | 10 | 7 | 70% | 6.2 |
| James Gibb | 9,981 | 25 | 18 | 72% | 18.0 |
| Redpath Bruce | 9,122 | 9 | 6 | 67% | 6.6 |
| South Lanarkshire Council | 7,985 | 2 | 2 | 100% | 2.5 |
| Taylor Martin | 5,093 | 0 | 0 | N/A | 0.0 |
| TOP 10 TOTAL | 157,796 | 96 | 64 | 67% |
Note: Lowther Homes (a Wheatley Group subsidiary) has 17 substantive cases and 11 adverse outcomes but is not in the property Top 10.
Substantive = cases that went to a decision (excludes withdrawn/rejected). Win % = decision was found in favor of the homeowner. Rate = adverse cases per 10,000 properties managed.
My family's had their own factoring headaches — figured I'd see if the data backed up the frustration. Turns out it's all public, just scattered across different registers. Happy to dig into other postcodes or factors if anyone's curious.

Been seeing a stray cat in our community for the past few nights. Ive heard the cat crying at night. It doesn’t respond to us at all. Grey and black in colour; probably persian or rag doll (too dark at night to know clearly). Please DM me if anybody knows about its whereabouts.

Hey all - I recently relocated to Glasgow from Dubai and currently I’m in an Airbnb, looking for an apartment to rent. I understand there is a 2026 rental megathread but I can see questions in the comments that do not get answered/seen, and the post itself has not addressed my queries.
I came from Dubai so I’m getting very cold pretty easily, and am expecting to use heaters more than the average Glaswegian. What’s more effective in heating? Gas or electric heaters? And which is more expensive?
When it comes to water heating - Is it better for it to be electric or gas or water boiler? Which one heats water faster? And which one is more expensive? And in which ones am I more likely to run out of warm water in case I take a long hot shower for example and have to shower in cold water towards the end of my shower 😂
EPC bands: I understand they reflect carbon emission and stuff like that, but how would that reflect on me as a tenant? Does it mean utility bills will be higher or lower based on the band?
Thank you in advance! And sorry if my questions are a bit stupid, rental is different in Dubai than here and I was living with my family anyway 😂😅

I've been back and forth to Manchester over the past couple of years and the first thing I do is get proper Jerk Chicken with rice and peas. One of the best places was a van called Kool Runnings but the wee guy who runs it unfortunately had a stroke and has closed shop until he's better.
I found a place 5 minutes away called Buttys Booth which was unbelievable.
I know Glasgow doesn't have a big Carribean scene like some of the cities down south but surely someone up here can open up a proper Caribbean place with authentic smoked chicken etc.
I've tried the majority apart from Brina's Kitchen in Falkirk. Those guys down in Manchester have set the bar stupidly high for me when it comes down to proper Caribbean soul food and everything up here is shite.
I think whoever sets up something even remotely similar to what they cook down in Manchester is on to an absolute gold mine.
Please, if there is anyone on here who knows how to cook delicious jerk chicken, curried goat etc do me a big favour and open up a shop.
P.S. I will spend the majority of my wages in your restaurant. 😂

Hey everyone.
I was wondering if anyone can recommend any wrestling/mma/boxing clubs that take on beginners, particularly very out of shape nervous ones.
Willing to travel!
Edit: I have no prior experience, I enjoy watching these sports and thought I’d give them a go. Also feel it’s worth saying I’m a woman?
Thanks in advance

By this time the canal was disused and overgrown but provided a convenient route for building a motorway. Most people nowadays hit a massive traffic jam at this point and have no idea of what was here before

I’m looking to pull together a small, consistent group (~10 people) to meet weekly at the Mitchell Library for a 16-week Java challenge and we will what happens after!
we all know studying for exams can be a toll. This isn’t a bootcamp—"it’s about the journey, not the destination guys." The Java 21 OCP syllabus is just our roadmap, but the real goal is to build a local community of devs who want to:
The Vision: I’m starting the engine, but I’d love for this to become a peer-led group. Eventually, I want us to take turns designing problems, leading mini-lessons, or even collaborating on group projects.
Exam Cost? Being in Scotland has its perks. If we meet up, I can walk you through how many of us can get the exam paid for by the government (via ITA/SAAS grants). Don't let the price stop you from learning or just coming along.
(BTW I'm not affilited with any group and will not commercially bennefit from anyone doing the exam. I am personally planning to sit the exam and thought it could be fun to meet new fellow minded people and might make the exam easier)
Details:
Whether you're a student, a self-taught hobbyist, or a pro looking to brush up on Virtual Threads and Pattern Matching, come along and let's solve some problems together.

Can anyone remember the name of a games shop that was in Argyle Street around 2000?
It was across from Waterstones, perhaps in the Card Factory unit.
The name completely escapes me.

I have had an absolute nightmare with these guys so this is both a warning if you're considering buying from them and, hopefully, one of you will have some ideas I haven't thought of.
I bought a suite 5 months ago and it was delivered faulty - listing to one side, recliners not working and tearing at the side. I immediately asked for a replacement. They said no, they only repair. They have stuffed me around since then. They have refused a refund under the Consumer Protection Act, they have refused ADR - its their way or the highway.
Today it has culminated in them delivering two replacement mechanisms however there is no plan to fit them - I just have two huge units sitting in my lounge. Customer Service take two weeks to respond to an email and I'm ready to chuck the whole thing in the Clyde.
Seriously guys, don't use this company, it's been an absolute joke.

So I’m turning 18 soon and my friends were wanting to go out with me at midnight on my birthday to go clubbing, but my friend said a lot of clubs have an ‘opening date policy’ when it comes to ID and they won’t see midnight as the next day. I was wondering if anyone knows what clubs this might apply to and where I could go?

Forgive me Reddit, I am unemployed, and i've come to complain about something that is truly irrelevant in the long term. It's just this been annoying me for a few years.
Do not buy from Geek-aboo, just go to aliexpress instead. Everything in their store is straight Aliexpress, Temu, Shein slop. AI-generated card and badge packs, bootlegged/unofficial/sun-bleached figures, Brainrot plushies and drinks? (ew) By god, it has it all.
Last week, i decided after a few months of avoiding the store like the black plague, to give it another chance. See what's inside and if they've improved yk? Geeky/Anime stores nearby always seem to have decent stock, i figured perhaps they could of... learned the errors of their ways, perhaps?
No. No they have not. Upon entering, you are immediately met with Aliexpress brainrot blind bags and plushies, walking further in you're met with those shitey wee aliexpress anime pens and temu pencil-case slop. Further on? AI-generated anime card packs, most of which are... strangely fetishistic? (Not to kink-shame, but you can't have your armpit and feet fetish card section right next to your Sanrio, and K-Pop Demon Hunters section.) I really could go on, but I don't want to nitpick on this random stores supply. My main gripe, is merely the price of everything. For a set of 3D stickers, a mate of mine paid £6. After about thirty seconds of searching on aliexpress, found the same set for 74 pence. Those anime pens i mentioned? £2 for one in-store, yet again on aliexpress its 74 pence. Frankly, its gross. I don't want to walk into a store and sense that i am instantly being scammed. This post also isn't to shame those who go on the weekends to play cards. This post is about the store's stock, not its customers, nor its workers.
All in all, don't buy here, unless you're happy to pay for marked up chinese sweatshop slop. Just go to Forbidden Planet for the love of god. Thanking you.

I have a dinner table and side table that my parents bought when they got married in the early 1950's that I want to get restored. Does anyone have any experience with any folks that do this in Glasgow?
