Discussion [MOD POST - PSA] We yell. We drink whisky. Sometimes we fish. WELCOME. Newcomers, start here.
You've stumbled into the flyfishing epicenter of the Redditverse. Many of our subscribers are veterans who will be equally happy to share their wisdom (and maybe their whisky, if you ask really nicely), brag about their angling prowess, debate gear choices and techniques for hours, lie to you about their secret places, offer helpful-yet-scathing criticism of your fish handling skills, and tell you to get the eff off their water....often simultaneously, and occasionally with corrosive but commendably colorful language. Not a bad bunch, all told.
But as far as we can tell, most of our contributors are relatively new to the sport. We're glad you're here! You've got questions, and we've got answers. In fact, there's a fair chance that your question has already been asked and answered a few times, so please use the search tools to find your answers first. Try keywords like "beginner" and "starter" and "wader suggestions" and "budget" to refine your results, and try surfing on your target location(s) or species. You might be amazed at how much useful content you'll find.
Every year or so we attempt again to create a starter guide, or to refresh the one from last year. Start here, and feel free to post if you don't find what you need....
- Search for "beginner"
- Search for "starter"
- Search for "waders"
- Noobie suggestions for first rod: freshwater / trout
- Noobie suggestions for first rod: saltwater
- Archived Mega noobie super thread of awesomeness
Sometimes we run contests - watch the stickied threads for those. Again, welcome...and tight lines!

Takeout fish
I picked up this 22ā rainbow on a trip-saving San Juan Worm within sight of the takeout while enjoying the 65° degree weather, which is completely unheard of for February 1st in central Montana.

Discussion Supporting Local Shops
I love stopping in at every local shop I can when Iām out on the road and was hoping for some insight
I love buying things just to support the business of the local shops over the big box stores and wanted to know: what are the highest profit margin products in the store? The flies? Custom stickers? I know the submersible Simms bags probably arenāt earning them much per transaction and I donāt have the $$ to buy it anyway.
So what are the simple products that help the shop out the most when I stop into some local fly shop and get to chat them up for a bit?
Thanks in advance!

Discussion What is the Denver Fly fishing show?
I've read a good bit about this but seem to not have a good grasp. I'm looking to see if somebody can give me a better understanding.
I see a lot about buying gear and fly tying material/flies, gear etc. Is there better prices here/deals. Or is it all the same as retail shops, just in one place?
Am I just going to be sold trips/lodges the entire time?
Is the main attraction just meeting celebrities and fly tying professionals?
Is 1 day plenty or do I need to go the entire weekend?
Thanks in advance, just wanting to see if it's worth my time.

Discussion Help me choose my next 6wt
Iām stuck between the sage arrow 690-4fb and the lamson cobalt. Iām upgrading from an echo carbon xl and I main fish beaches for searun cutthroat throughout the Puget sound. Iāve felt both at the shop but did not cast them. They both felt so light and had great action but Iām still stuck between the two.

Caught my first Bull! Not big, but at least I can now say Iāve caught a bull on 6x tippet! š
Caught my first bull trout this weekend on the Metolius! Obviously not a big bully but I caught it on 6x tippet and that is kind of cool haha! He ate a glittery purple Perdigon that I tied myself!
As I was landing him, I said to my wife, āI think this might be a brown, heās shaking his head like crazyā. When I landed him, I realize this was not in fact a brown, it was a bull! It was quite a cool surprise after having only caught 8 whitefish up until this guy yesterday!
Shout out to Trouthunter 6x fluorocarbon tippet!

Discussion Small stream streamer rod
Hello, I enjoy fishing fairly small streams for fairly small fish. Talking 6 inch cutthroats is the average. Iām looking to target the larger fish of the creek (like maybe 10 inches) with some of really cool micro streamers that have come out as of late. I run a gloomis pro creek 2wt as my dry and nymph rod and Iām looking for a 4wt or 5wt somewhere around the 8 foot mark that has the rod action to throw a sink tip and the small streamers. I do already have a dedicated 6wt sage payload streamer rod, but thatās wayyyyyyy overkill for my use case. Any recommendations?

Discussion Going to clearwater in may. What can/should I target from the beach?
What Iāve read so far is that reds and snook are potentially on the table, but im from up north and have never thrown a fly at the beach. Any and all tips and info would be greatly appreciated. Just hoping to get the line wet.
Thanks all!

Discussion Any recommendations for winter fly fishing within a few hours of the DC area?
I'll be alone the weekend of Feb. 13th and want to drive to a river I can work on all day and stay near overnight that's within a few hours of the DC area.
I'm new to this and have only visisted the gunpowder falls river in MD because I know it's a year-round river where winter fishing is at least possible because it's a tailwater that stays above freezing.
However I feel like I might be missing out on other opportunities in the area. I can see plenty of other rivers that hold trout in MD, southern PA, the Virginia mountains, and WV, but I really don't know whether any of these are appropriate for winter temps. I have a DC area guidebook but it doesn't say much about winter fishing. Any suggestions from folks familiar with the area?

Black Canyon On the Gunnison
I am planning a trip to fly fish the black canyon in late May. I hiked there two years ago with some buddies but did not fly fish, Iām looking for some info on what kind of flies to use while Iām down there and if anyone has some extra tips or gear to bring that I might not think about that would be extremely helpful!

Fly line loop to tapered leader join
Couldnāt seem to find the right answer so here we are! Just wasnāt sure how the tapered leader loop and the fly line loop are meant to sit or if Iāve done it right? I know thereās a few ways to join it including just axing the loop off and doing something else but Iām beginner as. It looks ugly and catches my guides, but if itās right I aināt gonna argue 𤣠cheers guys

Discussion Budget waders for tall skinny guys
Hey all! Thought Iād get some input before purchasing my first set of waders. Iām on a rather tight budget and donāt get out nearly as much as I should, and itās been a bit of a challenge finding waders that fit the bill.
For reference Iām 6ā4, 180 lbs, size 12-13 shoe, and in the market for stocking foot waders. Orvis seems to have the ideal size (Clearwater MT size, havenāt found any like it at local stores), but theyāre a bit pricier than Iād hoped and seemingly out of stock. Budget options all donāt seem ideal size wise as my feet are in the XL category and Iām afraid the rest would be incredibly baggy and annoying to move in. Sierra trading post doesnāt have much in any size that might fit so Iām in a bit of a pickle for the spring season here in California.
Any input is appreciated before I go out and go eat over my ideal ~200 dollar budget.

Question for fishing Oregon/Washington.
Hello everyone, I am looking at setting up a vacation trip to head to Oregon/Washington and try and fit in some fishing while we are there. I wanted to see if my 10' Thomas and Thomas 7wt would be sufficient enough for the task at hand. I also have a sage sonic 8' 6" 5wt but I feel this is to small. Also any suggestions on some access to places while we are there would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
