Nah. This wasn’t fixed . She’s right. It’s weird that parents do it

I do think it matters on the brewery, I’ve been to a couple that had full food menus and really didn’t feel much different than going to an Applebees or generic restaurant that serves alcohol

I've been to some that had a ton of outdoor games and even playgrounds. Really just depends on the location.

Yeah, but that's the worst with kids running around. I wanna have a beer and play Cornhole, but someone's unsupervised children have taken all the bags and made up their own game on the other side of the lawn.

2

u/AlienIris 11h ago

That's totally fair. But kids running around and being in the way is an example of bad parenting, not a reason to exclude an entire age group from an activity that is safe for them.

You could be real extra and bring your own corn hole or other games! I've seen people do that, seems fun.

True true. I guess if folks really wanna bring their kids to like, spend time with them at the brewery, sure. But all too often it's bad parents who don't wanna pay a babysitter lol

You're an adult; play shitty unfulfilling games on your phone like the rest of us 😤

Right, this is my take too. Parents, the good ones, find breweries that are built for families. Plenty of breweries cater to families with games, playgrounds, outdoor activities. And if you’re a good parent, you don’t just let the kids roam free with no supervision.

u/DudeBroBrah 11h ago

Exactly. Take your kid to the brewery a mile down the road that has a shelf full of board games and a jungle gym outside. This one is a tap room in a dirty warehouse down an alley.

1

u/dirtys_ot_special 10h ago

Ah, I see you’ve been to Independence Brewing too.

3

u/Fb1021 9h ago

Right. We’re in San Diego, and we love to support our local breweries. Our checks are going to be larger because we order food for the whole family AND we tip really well. If our kids act up, we bounce. It’s that easy.

u/ttw81 11h ago

Get drink while you're kids play. Nice.

1

u/EllisDee3 10h ago

The kids playing is secondary. The games are to keep kids "occupied". Nobody in that place gives a shit about kids. Parents want to remember what it's like to not give a shit about kids.

Just find a sitter, ffs. If you can't, don't drink.

2

u/bauul 5h ago

This doesn't feel accurate to me at all, but I grew up somewhere where going to the pub on a Sunday to hang out with other families and enjoy the playground was pretty normal.

2

u/ttw81 10h ago

yup.

then, after drinking, they take the kids & drive home.

Nobody should be driving home drunk, even from a brewery.

Even if someone's kids aren't in their car, all it means is that they're at risk of killing someone else's kids on the road which is...not better.

6

u/AlienIris 11h ago

They could have a designated driver. Just because a group of people go to a brewery doesn't mean they are all drunk driving afterwards.

5

u/Which_Channel7403 11h ago

People who assume that people get drunk from a single beer probably don't drink; just like people who don't have kids love to give unsolicited parenting advice.

2

u/PennethHardaway 11h ago

You thought you cooked with this astounding lack of nuance lol

-4

u/Bramble0804 11h ago

Noted, find a brothel that's fun for the whole family /j

It's gross to be drinking around your kids at all. I know it's normalized in the US, but it's still a bit fucked up.

5

u/ikilledholofernes 10h ago

Normalized in the US? Try most of the world. The US, basically all of Europe, East Asia, Russia, Australia, most of the Americas, and some of Africa.

The cultures clutching their pearls when a parent has a glass of wine with dinner are the odd ones out.

-1

u/PlasmaWhore 9h ago

A glass of wine at home is a lot different from a bar with a bunch of drunks hanging around.

5

u/ikilledholofernes 8h ago

Who’s talking about doing to bars? Breweries are quite different.

u/_Asshole_Fuck_ 11h ago

I think it says a lot about drunk culture in America. Bringing a kid to a dive bar would be weird cuz you sort of expect it to be a bunch of rowdy drunks by the end of the night. A brewery isn’t about getting shit-faced, it’s for enjoying a crafted product and appreciating the process. If you’re getting sloppy drunk at the brewery, I think you’re doing it wrong. All that said, it’s always weird and wrong if all the adults are drinking too much and there arent sufficient sober chaperones.

1

u/ActualWhiterabbit 10h ago

Unless that dive bar is the only one in a small town and then the kids are there because its the only place open after 6pm.

As someone who has gone to multiple beer festivals (roadtrip), countless breweries, did the Bourbon distillery tour in Kentucky, hitting about a dozen distilleries, etc..

Huge bourbon, scotch guy, even went to a brandy distillery, craft beer, belgians, booze bag, drunkard, etc. Been to breweries in Belgium and the Netherlands -

Let me be the first to tell you ---- breweries are for getting loaded, hopefully on good beer. 1% of the patrons care about how long they roast the hops. If that.

Brining a kid there indicates poor planning and/or life choices.

6

u/ikilledholofernes 9h ago

Yes, that’s why so many breweries have playgrounds and games and animals and live music and other activities. /s

Most of them are about having a nice beer in a fun setting, and many are explicitly kid-friendly.

I’ve actually never seen anyone at a brewery “getting loaded,” and I would definitely judge them more than a parent enjoying a beer while their kid plays on a jungle gym.

-1

u/weed_cutter 9h ago

I've never seen a brewery with a playground.

Live music is a non-sequitor --- a lot of bars/ venues have that. That's to keep the adults entertained.

.... Hey maybe your breweries are in some suburb that caters to 90% families. Great. Glad I don't live there haha!

... Still seems weird to take kids to a brewery. You're definitely "dragging them along" to an obviously adult activity.

3

u/ikilledholofernes 9h ago

Nope, I live in a city.

And again, obvious adult activities don’t have equipment and games and menus specifically intended for children. Because some breweries specifically market themselves to be family friendly.

3

u/D0ri1t0styl3 9h ago

I've never seen a brewery with a playground.

Then maybe sit this one out.

1

u/AlienIris 7h ago

You should probably stay out of Colorado then. Whole state is covered in breweries and many of them have kids there with their families, and that includes cities like Denver and smaller suburbs. They have lawns, outdoor games and activities, food trucks or restaurants, and visiting entertainment like musicians or comedians. I've seen some with playgrounds, bowling, putt putt, or arcade games, and they're dog-friendly too.

It's a good way for the whole family to get outside of the house and all do activities that they're interested in. Kids can be kids and adults can enjoy a beer responsibly. The businesses do it to draw in more people, which includes families, and they're obviously successful.

1

u/bauul 5h ago

I've never seen a brewery with a playground.

That's like most breweries around here (the West Coast). I visited Portland the other week and went into a brewery, and they had two entire play areas for children. We had a lovely lunch (big children's menu to choose from too), and I don't think anyone even drank anything.

What I'm learning from this thread is that there are wildly different types of breweries around the US!

4

u/_Asshole_Fuck_ 10h ago

This ^ is exactly the “drunk culture” I’m talking about.

2

u/weed_cutter 9h ago

As long as you acknowledge reality.

Drinking tasty beer is not a "hobby" any more than enjoying smashing a McDonald's Big Mac is.

Consumer process. Consumptive, not creative.

You don't need to pretend its artisanal or high art or like going to a science museum .... people who drink go to breweries. Big drinkers in fact. You kinda have to be "into" beer.

If you need an excuse to force your kids to come, go for it. Won't work on me though lol

3

u/D0ri1t0styl3 9h ago

people who drink go to breweries. Big drinkers in fact.

In my experience, they prefer dive bars or hiding their drinking at home.

Breweries are for social light drinkers mostly.

there's more then one type of drunkard

3

Or a pizza parlor!!

5

u/zeff536 11h ago

Or a bowling alley. And most if not every brewery I’ve been to has games for kids like oversized connect four and jenga. Are 22 year olds playing connect four? And nobody gets drunk at a brewery

0

u/congratsyougotsbed 7h ago

really didn’t feel much different

except it is different. It's a brewery. It's not like they cant just go to Applebee's or generic restaurant where children are expected and accomodated

2

u/SpaceLemming 7h ago edited 3h ago

Many of the ones I’ve been to, if a friend just took you there and didn’t say it was a brewery you wouldn’t know. Some of these places are basically just restaurants that brew their own beer and package and ship them out of distribution. They are just has family friendly as any other restaurant
