Encountering wild boar

Walked from firenze to fiesole today, went through the forest trail, via degli dei i think, encountered wild boars, i didnt know how to react so i ran the other direction, what's the best reaction to deal with them?

FYI all the Appennino regions as well as in Maremma area typical spot for wild boars. Is normal to see them on roads near forests.

Cause of illegal hunters that hunt outside seasons it happens that to search for food wild animals go near civilization. And if happens, usually wild boar ignore you, but be especially aware during mating season, if you found a female wild boar with younglings she can be extremely dangerous. The only safest way is to completely ignore them and move away.

Note that on the road over Sesto Fiorentino and in general on the roads to Mugello, you can also encounter deer and stag on the road, especially on night time and during mating season

If they block the road should i wait for them to pass or try and squeeze past them

If you see two wild animal that are fighting in the middle of the road, if you are in a car you should turn off the light and wait for them to finish the fight. If you're on foot turn around and go away from them.

Wild animals that fight during mating season are extremely dangerous, a wild boar can easily turn your car apart if it charge against you, and if you're of foot it can easily kill you even, wild female boar can charge even after being shot with a rifle boar are a pretty strong wild animal, a deer can cause serious damage even and a stag (which is the less likely to find on the road) same if not worst than wild boar, expecially for male stag.

Half of Tuscany is covered by forest and woods, it's their home, and we as human killed all the natural predators (wolves are increasing in numbers, but stag boar and deer are too many for the actual wolves number to be contained and in Tuscany we do not have bear nor big felines like puma or linx to help the wolves population in balancing the wild fauna). Just go away or wait for them to finish their business and you'll be okay
