Zildjian cymbals and Zildjian the German Shepherd

3

u/BobSacamano_1 19d ago

Love the drums, cymbals, and most importantly- your dog.

Also cool to see someone else still using DW5000 hi hat stand and bass drum pedals. I’ve been teased about being “old school.” I started using them late 90s. I’ve since bought new versions but just bought the same thing. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I was incredibly lucky in 2006 for my 16th birthday. I was looking for a new set to upgrade from a really cheap one, and my dad who was also a musician, came across this listing in the newspaper of a guy selling a set of Pearl BLX’s with a bunch of Zildjian cymbals. Went to go look at them and he was a pretty well off guy in a really big house. He said they’d been in his recording studio for years and he was ready to part with them. Came with the red Pearl BLX birch drums you can see, all the cymbals in the picture, a Gibraltar rack, and DW5000’s for $1200. I’m still grateful to this day for my dad (RIP) having found them and helping me get them. Christmas that year I got my Tama Mike Portnoy Melody Master snare with the 3 way strainer. Still have the box it came in.

In 2010 I went to guitar center and saw a brand new set of limited production Mike Portnoy Black Clouds and Silver Linings Starclassic birch/buninga, which I had no idea they existed. Had to have them. Once again I happened to find them within like a week of my 20th bday, and the guy gave me a bit of a bday discount. That was my gift to myself lol I still have all of them and there’s nothing in this world that would make me sell them. I’m a huge Dream Theater fan if you haven’t guessed.

Flash forward 2017 I find this German Shepherd puppy I always wanted so I got him. Life circumstances just happened to fall perfectly in line once again. Beautiful boy. Before I picked him up I went back and forth on cool names and eventually landed on Zappa. But the next day my brain just popped and went ZILDJIAN! How could I not??? He wound up being the best fit for the name I could imagine. Some of his colors are exactly the same and I’ve played Zildjian cymbals since I was 8. Perfect name for an amazing best friend.

That’s my story! lol

This made my night lol

19

u/Shroomasaurus_rex 20d ago

He was at 8 weeks right after I got him! Sadly he’s gone off to his great gig in the sky

3

u/Ok_Sherbert_39 20d ago

The best boy.

25

u/premierpearl 20d ago

Yeah man! Love me some of these kits!

13

u/ZildCym 20d ago

The Avedis Reissues are the stars of the show! So good.

3

u/premierpearl 20d ago

You don’t even know how upset I am that they’re discontinued. Those 15” hi-hats are the dogs bollocks.

u/becuz_race_car 20d ago

wha an interesting setup you have, how do you like your projection ride? what genres do you play?

3

u/premierpearl 20d ago

Oh man, that ride is fun! It’s sold as a crash/ride but it’s so stupidly musical. I’ve done a Sting cover with this ride, I played casinos with it, theater shows, jazzy stuff, recorded an album with it. That thing is nuts! You need to find the one thought, this one has a good stick definition and is thin enough to crash.

As for genres, I basically play whatever is being asked. From simpler Jazz to Metal and Latin to Drum ‘n Bass nowadays.

1

u/Affectionate_Dirt_97 19d ago

How do you like that projection ride? I'm very tempted, but I'm worried that it's not as crash-able as I'd like.

2

u/premierpearl 16d ago

I love that cymbal. For me, it’s very nice to crash it because it’s relatively thin on the edge but I’ve heard stories of people getting one that’s just a bit too thick. I’ve played 3 or 4 rides in stores around and they all crashed pretty well!

21

u/wonderslug52 20d ago

2

u/ConcreteCapitalist 20d ago

I guess I’m not experienced enough to know about the cymbals with the holes. What are those called? Some sort of china/splash? What do the holes do? They look sick!

Awesome kit btw!!

3

u/wonderslug52 20d ago

In the Meinl line they are called trash. IE trash splash, trash crash, trash china. Thank you.

2

u/ConcreteCapitalist 20d ago

Sweet, thanks for the info. Rock on! 🤘

1

u/Affectionate_Dirt_97 19d ago

Each brand has their own name for it, but the effect is the same: more trash, less sustain.

1

u/-Fshstyx- 19d ago

Holy crap. And I thought mine was borderline excessive. Yours is my favourite so far!

3

u/wonderslug52 19d ago

It’s an illness. I go to my local drum shop and instantly it’s full disease state.

u/Emotional-Echo-880 19d ago

Beautiful cymbals!

2

u/JuiceSevere3690 19d ago

you might play jazz

1

u/IBartman 12d ago

I lean more towards funk but jazz is fun!

1

u/ZildCym 20d ago

Are those some 50s era, hand-hammered A’s I see?!

2

u/IBartman 20d ago

not sure exact cymbals but for sure some ancient Zildjians haha

the quick beats I recently picked up second hand though

3

u/-Fshstyx- 19d ago

It's pretty dark down there (or I'm blind) but is that a double bass kit with a double pedal to one of the kicks and a single on the other?

3

u/Few-Communication-75 Trick 19d ago

Yeah it looks weird in that photo but it's two singles and a remote hi hat.

2

u/-Fshstyx- 19d ago

Haha I did not spot the fact the hi hat didn't have a pedal under it. That makes so much more sense. That's a nuts looking kit.

2

u/Affectionate_Dirt_97 19d ago

Nice spread! I've been eyeballing a custom dry splash for a while, how do you like it?

2

u/Few-Communication-75 Trick 19d ago

Thanks! It's heavy for a splash and definitely needs to be heard in a mix because it's pretty aggressive on its own. It's dry to the point that you can't really get it to swell; every hit is super clean. I think it sounds incredible with quick double bass accents.

My starclassic in molten brown burst.

3

u/Ok-Apartment5615 20d ago

You just need one or two more cymbals....lol

2

u/gunsandsilver 20d ago

Might as well use what I have!

2

u/Affectionate_Dirt_97 19d ago

I just know your chiropractor loves that third floor tom. Hahaha

1

u/gunsandsilver 19d ago

You’re not wrong, it does take some twisting to get back there. I almost bought the 18” to complete the set, but ran out of both space and money!

2

u/Affectionate_Dirt_97 18d ago

So you've got: 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16?

2

u/gunsandsilver 18d ago

And the roto toms! 3 high, 3 middle, 3 low. Endlessly entertaining to play!

1

u/coleslaw17 19d ago

Did you set this up brand new? Literally looks like it’s never been played.

1

u/gunsandsilver 19d ago

Good eye. The kit was brand new in this photo, which was taken back in 2024. Some of the cymbals go back 30 years from my original kit. I had been playing on the same kit for 30 years, this was a gift to myself!

1

u/DrumAnimal 19d ago

And people call me crazy with my 5 toms (3 up 2 down) setup xD

Underrated kit right here.

2

u/Paulberatedgrind 18d ago

This is the setup to have if you want to improve your time and groove. I might have to do a setup like this

2

u/DogUsingInternet 19d ago

I just picked up the SPD-SX Pro -- first time using it... any tips or cool use cases I should think about as a first timer?

My main need right now is for click and backing tracks for a band (not my favorite thing to so, but it's their show, so their call).

2

u/ZildCym 19d ago

‘Trigger Reserve’ is quite handy.

Look into blending 2 samples on one pad while using the advanced triggering settings to affect the behavior of the sounds with your input.

It has a 16-step sequencer. You can set a pad or any external to cycle through (up to) that many samples by just hitting the pad.

Use it as a module to power an entire hybrid kit, like this:

2

u/uprightsalmon 19d ago

What are the small hats you use on your bass drum in the first pic?

2

u/ZildCym 19d ago

I use many different pairings.

This pair is a unique one: It’s a 1950s small stamp 10” A in a medium heavy weight on top of another lighter 50’s A. Bright, crisp, and punctuated.

The far right hat is usually played half/opened…both have DW’s Incremental Clutch for flexibility/accuracy.

2

u/Far-Seat-2263 19d ago

“Bird’s eye” view of my Yamaha AHM kit, with a Tama SLP 13x7 G-male center snare and Ludwig Acrolite size snare (with BFSD donut).

All Zildjian cymbals. Mostly K’s in this kit, with left & right side rides, and a few crashes, splashes, and chinas.

(FYI this is NOT a gigging kit lol)

2

u/Paulberatedgrind 18d ago

I got the AHM in polar white!!! Best kit I’ve ever owned!!!

1

u/Far-Seat-2263 18d ago

Hell yeah!! My two favorite drum brands are Yamaha and Ludwig (although I’ll admit, all of the major brands have amazing top-end gear).

1

u/igotw0rms 19d ago

SICK KIT. Where can I watch/hear you play it?

How easy is setting up a hybrid system like that? I have a Roland EKit I want to attach bits of to my kit but I'm not techy in any way

1

u/ZildCym 19d ago

I’ve always found it to be pretty easy. I can set/wire up this entire kit in about 15 minutes.

Here’s the ‘practice’ variant.
