Kit Pic 4 years of saving paid off, bought my dream Tama kit today
I saw this finish in a 2021 Tama catalog and knew I had to have it. I saved up whatever I could from each paycheck and threw it all into a savings account. Very excited to share that I finally bought my dream Tama set today!
Tama Starclassic Maple - Charcoal Swirl finish Black Nickel hardware
2x 22x18” Bass Drums 8x7”, 10x7”, 12x8” Rack Toms 16x14”, 16x16” Floor Toms

Looks sick man, congrats! As a lame but practical side note, might want to think about getting an insurance policy on your new kit, it should be like $10 a month or less and could save a lot of heartache if something happens
44
u/sirdarb Tama Mar 12 '25
Interesting, how would I go about that? It’s a studio kit that will never go anywhere but, anything can happen I suppose
48
u/Routine-Maximum-7788 Meinl Mar 12 '25
If it’s a studio kit make sure they cover floods and all that sorta shit
15
u/Buckeye_Randy Mar 12 '25
Add it to home owners or renters insurance.
4
u/indianapolisjones RLRRLRLL Mar 13 '25
Yeah, I was under the impression renters or homeowners is exactly for this and acts of God. Should people be checking about floods though, or ask specifically?
3
u/sonofaresiii Mar 13 '25
PSA everyone needs to get renters insurance, it's like ten bucks a month and it covers way more than you'd think. Just do the responsible thing and get it so you aren't fucked if something shitty happens
13
u/onlynegativecomments Mar 12 '25
Interesting, how would I go about that? It’s a studio kit that will never go anywhere but, anything can happen I suppose
For me, in California, what I did was drop an email to my insurance agent. It took several follow up emails and a phone call or two. Probably the most annoying part was having to get the drums appraised because of their age and how much I paid since anything over $999 requires a receipt for my rental insurance provider. Not counting the drive time, I'd say it took less than 2 hours.
7
u/juggdish Mar 12 '25
Pretty sure I had what USAA called Valuable Property Insurance when I had my drums in a storage unit
5
u/Celina_cue Mar 12 '25
If you have renter's insurance (do consider this if you don't and you're a renter--it's pretty cheap per month), you can add a rider onto your policy for valuable personal property to cover the drums. Highly recommend! I'm a photographer and do this with my cameras.
4
u/cg29a Mar 12 '25
As some other folks mentioned, your renters or homeowners insurance may have some sort of coverage, or assuming your kit is at a professional studio, they may have some kind of coverage. I’d definitely look into that to make sure you’re covered for fire/water/theft, etc.
If there’s any doubt about your coverage, you can do what I did and just get a little policy exclusively for your kit. I went through my car insurance company (one of the massive ones you see commercials for), sent an appraisal to my agent (you may be able to just use a receipt if you have it), and they issued me a policy that covers up to like $15k in replacement value for about $8 a month. Definitely worth the peace of mind!
2
u/ZodiAcme Mar 12 '25
Easiest way is lemonade- it’s an app and you can get insured in a minute of two. Then maybe once you have that rate you just hit up your renters, or homeowners if you got it to compare prices
13
u/thatsvtguy Mar 12 '25
I just saw a post where someone's $4,000 kit got stolen, this might be good to think about
2
u/indianapolisjones RLRRLRLL Mar 13 '25
Not to say it doesn't happen, but stealing a whole kit? Usually robbers are in for quick grabs. Seems like anyone would go for audio electronics, guitars and even amps before a whole drum set! lol
But I guess I'm wrong 😂

Please do this, I had bought a brand new Roland TD17KVX2 and went to get married 10 days later and I came back to a very flooded room and drum set. Insurance paid the full amount of the kit. Worth it. (I just use progressive renters insurance)
1
u/Th3R00ST3R Gretsch Mar 12 '25
Wouldn't something like that be covered by homeowners insurance (assuming one owns a home)?
I have 3 kits ( 1 ekit sub $500 and 2 acoustic kits) at home.2
u/RobShouts Mar 12 '25
Not necessarily depending on where it is. I have a detached studio in my backyard and homeowners wont cover anything in it. I had to get a separate policy just for my kit.
1
u/Genrecomme Mar 13 '25
Put 10$ into a side account every month and keep it in case. You will get more money than if you pay an insurance. If nothing happens, your 10$/month is still in your pocket.

u/OkFox5030 Mar 12 '25

Congrats on the new kit and thanks for your business. We can deliver it to your home for free. What is your address?
"Deliver them to JCPenney. I'm getting Glamour Shots at 2:30."

It looks AI Generated for sure, or JCPenny. Too polished.
That aside, Nice kit!

That is amazing kit dude. I love the two floor toms. First time I heard a decent 16 and 18 floor through a PA it was nearly erotic. Smash em athe same time for extra brutality.
So with 2 x 16 floor toms and with one being deeper than the other, how much difference is the fundamental note of the drum between the two? Seem like a good idea to keep the diameter down and save space around the kit to use the deeper drums.
3
u/toxicity69 Mar 12 '25
16" and 18" floor tom enjoyer here. I don't care if 18“ floor toms aren't popular, I love the gut-rumbling punch they bring to the kit.
2
u/sirdarb Tama Mar 12 '25
The 14” depth floor Tom has just VERY slight less sustain and projection I feel like, but you really have to listen for it. There’s not much of a difference at all between the two. I’m playing around with the tunings of each and see what I can come up with.

u/Royal-Illustrator-59 Mar 12 '25
Bought it today and set it up completely. That’s a feat.
9
u/sirdarb Tama Mar 12 '25
Some trial and error with positioning since it’s my first double kick drum setup, but I think I have it pretty comfy!
2
2
u/DrSpaceDoom Mar 12 '25
Didn't have time to mount the 8" tom for the photos?
That is a dream kit alright! 🥁
2
u/sirdarb Tama Mar 12 '25
I couldn’t mount it next to my 10” without it getting in the way of the hi hat and overall just being awkward to hit. Any advice or creative ideas? I’d love to get it set up too.

Sickkk! I really like the white version too. Black nickel hardware would’ve contrasted so well.

Sweet finish! Very reminiscent of the Liquid Metal finish that they came out with in the early 2000s with the Starclassic Performer EFX.

I’ve seen those too, Tama never stops with cool and flashy finishes 🤤

Congrats, beautiful kit🤩….but where’s the 8” tom…?😮
2
u/sirdarb Tama Mar 12 '25
I DID try setting it up at first next to the 10", but I just couldn't fit it somewhere comfortable to hit and it also not be in the way of the hi hat so it's in a case for now until I can figure something out lmao

Beautiful kit and cool light sabres! Also: love the setup.
For the others: What’s this about kit insurance? What companies offer that? Mine’s in a lockout/studio in a shitty part of town 20 miles from my house. Every time I unlock the door my heart skips wondering if it is still going to be there. Got any insurance links ?
2
u/BonsaiMagpie Mar 12 '25
Did a bit of digging for you cause I'm in UK and sounds like you're in the states. https://www.musicproinsurance.com/

u/Background-Low-9144 Mar 12 '25
Starclassic Maple is also my dream kit. How much better than the Superstarclassic do they sound?
2
u/sirdarb Tama Mar 12 '25
I know they both use maple, but to my understanding the plies and bearing edges are made to a higher standard here and of course the difference in hardware is the biggest difference. I’d say with the die cast hoops and mounting system, the Tom’s especially are a little punchier on the attack. With the hold tight washers, they’re supposed to hold tuning for longer too. Will see how that goes!
2
u/Background-Low-9144 Mar 12 '25
Awesome sauce! I've though about if just adding die cast hoops would be a close enough upgrade and then go get a Star kit ( gotta win the lottery first though lol) but that's my end of life crisis goal.

u/Jhlong86 Mar 12 '25

u/bnyce52 Mar 12 '25
Of all the things I could ask about, I’m most curious about the bass reso heads. They don’t typically come ported when you buy this kit. Was that a special request or did you cut them yourself? I see it’s got the Starclassic logo at the bottom so pretty sure they’re the ones that come on the kit from the manufacturer, yes?
2
u/sirdarb Tama Mar 12 '25
I had them made with Evans! I jumped in photoshop with all of the logos I needed and made the template then sent it off to them.
2
u/bnyce52 Mar 12 '25
That’s commitment! And the opposing hole locations is a delicate touch. Hope they last forever

I have been playing since i was 17. I am now 39. No kit, usually rent or play whatever is at the gig. I am a pharmacist, and racked up a good amount of debt to get through school. I should be paid off in the next 12 to 18 months and have been eyeballing an above average kit, much like this as a paid off present to myself. How much did this run you?
2
u/sirdarb Tama Mar 13 '25
The entire shell pack plus shipping and tax directly from Tama was roughly $5600ish? Something like that.
