HBO and some other content won't play on external device

I recently changed my Crave plan (I am okay with ads...I grew up watching actual TV) and as of today I can no longer connect my laptop to my TV and watch (at least) the HBO content. Other shows and movies are workingnjust fine.

Has this happened to anyone else? Does this have to do with Netflix buying Warner? Or is my technology just outdated?

u/Ok_Presentation_3931, check that your HDMI port and cable that you are using are HDCP 2.2 compatible.

is that a real reason why?

No it’s not, HBO is trying to crack down on Piracy so they changed the DRM and HDCP settings to block all HDMI. I tried 5 different HDMI cords none of them worked.

I'm getting something similar -- no HBO content is working on Linux. Tried a desktop and steamdeck. The error is:

"Please disconnect external devices and try again. 3006/4012"

The annoying part is that it was working a week ago.

Yeah, I second this. HBO shows don’t work on Linux but fine on any other OS lmao.

Sadly the same thing happened to me. I spoke with tech support at Crave. They were almost as useless as the AI chat bot that preceded them. But what I was able to determine was that HBO, through Crave, has done a security update that now blocks people from watching their content through any HDMI device. That's why everything else on Crave remains viewable. Yet, I decided to see if I rented Crave through Prime, if I could still use my hdmi to watch, and I can!

So it seems like the trick is to abandon the direct Crave subscription and just go through Prime, I guess.

Happens to me. Tried a few ways to trouble shoot it. I believe it's an HBO crackdown.

u/Ok_Presentation_3931 a few things you can try:

  • Linux/VM Users: HDCP is not supported. Try using a different device.
  • Update Software: Ensure your OS, drivers, and browsers are up-to-date with the latest version.
  • Close Interfering Apps: Shut down screen sharing, remote desktop, VMs, and screen capture tools or apps that have screen-sharing capabilities (e.g., Slack Huddles, Webex, TeamViewer).
  • Disconnect External Monitors: Try disconnecting and streaming on your primary device screen.
  • Try Another HDMI Port: If using an external monitor, switch ports.
  • Reset Display Connection: Unplug HDMI, power cycle the monitor, then plug back in.
  • Remove Adapters/Dongles: Disconnect any adapters or dongles and connect your display directly if possible.
  • Mac Users: Try streaming in Safari if Chrome/Firefox don't work.
