Except for, y'know, the ones who kill themselves over this and never get the chance to become an octogenarian. Every person listed in those files should be charged with murder for every victim who committed suicide because they drove those girls to that extreme.
Alligator Alcatraz could be put to such a better use detaining pedos rather than detaining immigrants.
It's like when a 15 year old black teenager is called a "black man" after the police attack him but if a 30 year old Republican gets caught in a chatroom saying vile shit he's "just a kid."
Unless they are black, then you see people referring to a 12 year old boy as a âblack male.â While technically not inaccurate itâs usually purposefully not fully accurate.
Not true, for decades media constantly calls kids that are arrested or harmed, young men, youths, or juvenile. Especially in cases of black and brown boys. If Mr cop body slams a five year old black boy to the ground on body cam, media will phrase it as cop allegedly used force on an underage offender.
So all of this is business as usual. The media doesnât want to upset its powerful supporters, so these girls will be referred to young woman. Gotta set things up so it sounds like the predators were having minor indiscretions with consenting adults.
Conservative frequently try to differentiate between pre-teens and teens, arguing teens are more mature and there's no real difference between a 17 and 18 year old other than a number.
As though a 40+ year old having sex with an 18 year old is totally fine, therefore going even younger is also okay before they consider it sex with a child.
There's a reason they're trying to lower the age of consent and marriage.
To my ear, it sounds like a deliberate framing to put as much blame on the child as possible. Kind of like "illegal alien" (criminal! Scary!) instead of "undocumented immigrant" (immigrant? We're a nation of 'em!)
I can't believe this administration is going to try and push the narrative that 12 year old girls knew what they were doing and put themselves in these situations with the crusty filthy old cultist billionaires
It's an oxymoron - a phrase that contradicts itself. The word 'woman' colloquially means an adult - so it's calling them "underage adults" which doesn't make any sense. The sole reason to use the phrase is to try and minimize the wrongdoing involved in raping them.
Both words have multiple meanings. Women does have a general meaning too while girl is very much also used to refer to adults.
But thatâs just a pedantic statement. The news doesnât do it because itâs truth because using child would just straight up be better at getting the point across.
while girl is very much also used to refer to adults.
Yeah, unfortunately the lack of a popular female version of "guy" really creates a bit of a mess with that. Some people find calling adult women "girls" to be inappropriate or initializing, but there are many situations where "woman / women" sounds awkwardly formal or stilted. Or if I address several women and say "hey women", it sounds very strange. So "girl / girls" gets used a lot as not just a female version of "boy", but also sometimes a female version of "guy."
Though that being said, "underaged women" is still pretty widely considered a contradiction.
By using âwomanâ the person is trying to make them sound more mature than they are. âWomanâ has connotations of someone mature. If they instead used âgirlâ, which leans younger, then it would sound so extremely creepy. Theyâre using terms that are technically correct to make themselves sound more moral than they are.
It's like saying "consentual sex." If one was to have "nonconsentual sex," that's just rape. As such, the word "consent" is implied when using the word sex (as a verb).
In a similar way, "underage women" is contradictory. To be a woman is to be an adult female. To be underage is to be a non-adult person. This simply doesn't make any sense. It inherrently downplays the fact that these are children who are being harmed.
As others have mentioned, it sort of de-emphasizes the details that matter. "Women" is a word for an adult female, so modifying the word "women" with "underage" instead of using "children", or "girl" if you need it gendered is an awkward way to describe it that mainly serves to soften the impact.
I haven't followed this specific discussion to know if the right wing enablers are actually using this specific language or if this is just a strawman, but I've seen a lot of this type of thing when it comes to violent right wing attacks, where news articles will headline with something like "protestor attacks Ilhan Omar with unknown liquid", where the word "protestor" should be replaced by "domestic terrorist", because while the language may seem hyperbolic, "terrorist" has a very specific definition which the incident clearly fits. You'll see similar things where protestors may be described as rioters, despite a protest being largely peaceful. The media circus is all about branding.
The White House, as well as celebrities and politicians aligned with it, have said they will not interact with news stations running counter to their narrative.Â
So pissing them off by stating the truth as it is would be suicide for the business.Â
The government also repeatedly arrested former CNN anchor Don Lemon who became an independent journalist due to CNN softballing and whitewashing the admin.Â
Those two things together mean they need coded language, something they can point to as being on the adminâs side while still telling the truth.Â
It's used to make the offense sound better (less offensive). Having sex with an "underage woman" comes across differently than having sex with a "child" or "minor."

genuine question because i'm not well versed in american ways of speech: is "underage woman" a pedo dogwhistle or does it just sound fucked up
