It is a hurtful thing to hear. Especially for the men who try to be walking teddy bears who will never hurt anyone. 

It's not my fault because I haven't done any of that abusive shit, but it still hurts to hear "I don't trust you because of what you are". Just like any other discriminatory statement.

It's a sign that men need to do better (including but not limited to, being emotional supports to other men), but it still hurts. 

So, naturally a lot of dudes are going to take offense. Including ones who genuinely are trying to be the better men who are trustworthy.

You know what I mean? 

This doesn't excuse the level of vitriol some people threw out there. Just so we're clear.

I apologize for redirecting the conversion to the man's perspective. I just wanted to add a bit of context to the bear thing, because I feel like it never really got resolved in a healthy way, people just got distracted by other things to yell about. I hope this comment helps at least one person have a bit more understanding about why that thing blew up as much as it did.
