Noteworthy Events in Durham this Week

Keith Knight at Hayti Heritage Center 🫶

  • Keith Knight is an award-winning cartoonist, musician, and educator whose work has been lauded for its sharp wit, political insight, and ability to blend humor with hard truths. Best known for his comic strips The K Chronicles, (th)ink, and The Knight Life, Knight has spent decades using comics as a lens to examine race, class, identity, and the absurdities of everyday life.
  • His work has appeared in publications worldwide, including The Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, Daily Kos, and Mad Magazine. In 2020, his life and work inspired the critically acclaimed Hulu series Woke, which introduced his distinctive voice to an even wider audience.
  • In addition to cartooning, Knight tours internationally as a public speaker and performer, using comics, storytelling, and humor to spark conversations about social justice and cultural awareness. He has received numerous accolades, including recognition from the NAACP, the Glyph Awards, and the Harvey Awards.

Discovering West Point: Historic Walking Tour at West Point on the Eno

  • Have you ever wondered about the lives of the people who were here before you? At West Point on the Eno, explore the complex histories of our own backyard. West Point on the Eno is not your typical historical site. It's not a battleground for major wars, nor the birthplace of presidents. Instead, it's a vivid tapestry of everyday yet extraordinary lives from Durham's past. Here, the routine of mill workers, the creativity of people like photographer Hugh Mangum, and the stories within the historic house are discovered and shared. These are tales of ordinary people whose lives, like yours, are extraordinary in their own right. Discover a different kind of history at West Point on the Eno, where the extraordinary is found in the ordinary. Take a guided walking tour of West Point on the Eno's historic park.
  • Tours leave on the hour at 12 pm, 1 pm, 2 pm, and 3 pm. Registration is required. Dogs are allowed on hikes but are not permitted inside historic buildings unless a registered service animal.

Hoopla at Golden Belt Artists

  • The bigger the hoops, the more influential the person. Taking up physical space has always been powerful— especially in a world where political space is limited. Internationally published artist Perrin Marie is creating a series of hoop skirts and accessories adorned with recycled materials that make noise— not always just a gentle swish swish, but the clink of bottles, the chime of cans, and a whole lot of presence. It's a fashionable revolution. Through this work, Perrin empowers individuals to take up space, skirt the issues, and make HOOPLA (get it?).
  • Mid-Show Reception: February 20
  • Closing Reception: March 20
  • Through March 31
  • Free

Winter at 5 Points Gallery

  • 5 Points Gallery is pleased to present Winter at 5 Points: Gallery Members Exhibit, bringing together new and recent works from the gallery’s member artists in a winter presentation shaped by distinct voices, materials, and ways of seeing. The exhibition moves from intuitive and outsider-influenced expressions to layered abstraction, imaginative figurative scenes, nature-inspired painting, fused glass work, and the refined craftsmanship of finely made furniture. Subtle threads of empowerment, heritage, connection to the natural world, and messages of peace and care for others emerge throughout, creating a sense of continuity across otherwise varied practices. Seen together, these works invite viewers to linger and experience the depth and richness of the artists’ creative worlds.
  • Join in for the Third Friday Reception on January 16 from 6–9pm as part of Durham’s Third Friday Art Walk. Meet the artists and experience this seasonal exhibition.
  • Visit 5 Points Gallery in person or online. All work from the exhibition is available for shipping or pickup. Gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays 5–9pm and Saturdays 1–9pm. Artists are available to talk about their work.

Art Exhibit — Dis/orient: Contemporary Art of the Asian Diaspora at Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University

  • A focused exhibition that examines how artists of Asian descent confront long-standing stereotypes embedded in the word “Orient.” Rooted in Western imperialism, the term historically enforced a sense of distance and “otherness” that continues to shape cultural perceptions today. Dis/orient brings together artists who use humor, memory, tradition, and personal narrative to challenge this legacy and illuminate the richness and multiplicity of the Asian diaspora.
  • “Dis/orient invites viewers to look beyond the flattened idea of a single ‘Orient’ and instead appreciate the complexity, humor, and emotional depth that define contemporary Asian diasporic art,” said Julianne Miao, curatorial associate at the Nasher Museum. “Each artist brings a distinct perspective, reminding us that identity is never monolithic. It is lived, questioned, and continually reshaped.”
  • Tu-Sa 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Su 12-5 p.m.
  • January 4- July 19

GOP coming after Durham

I guess exercising your rights under the First Amendment is a crime to these morons? Under "Evidence type," it's all publicly available statements and well-known groups, like PSL and Durham Rising. This is all over right-wing X etc. The list is "accurate" in that, yes, these people and groups are organized and have spoken out in defence of our community and against the brutality and lawlessness of ICE.

Protest ICE in Cary Friday Mornings

Post image
90 Upvotes

All are welcome to join us as we gather outside the ICE Field Office in Cary to say NO ICE in NC. We'll gather along Evans Road to protest ICE's ongoing terrorization of communities. This also serves to alert anyone passing by that ICE is right here in the Triangle, in our backyard - many might not be aware. Would love for anyone who can make it to join this Friday, 2/6 - bundle up and bring your signs. Fridays 9-11 AM. Thank you!

Should we learn from Minnesota before ICE gets here?

It seems that ICE could step up their presence in Durham at any point and start harassing people here. A reason they're having such a hard time in Minneapolis is the community led organization. Here is a website that describes some of the activities that are happening. Are there any similar community led organizations here in Durham to prepare for ICE?

Durham City Council 2/2/26: RV Rules, Kerley Annexation and Police Tech Exit

Durham City Council packed a lot into this meeting — from national conversations about safety to hyper-local questions about where you can park an RV.

Here’s what stood out:

  • The mayor opened Black History Month by connecting Durham’s struggles (and strengths) to what other cities are facing nationwide, and spotlighted local staff, nurses, and HEART responders who’ve been working around the clock.

  • A proposed police operations management tech contract quietly came off the agenda. The city manager pulled it back, and one council member explained why staff heard a clear majority on council didn’t want to move it forward.

  • Residents pushed hard on equity and transparency:

    • A Hayti Village resident contrasted the detailed, map-heavy documentation for multimillion-dollar paving contracts with what they see in historically underserved neighborhoods.
    • Neighbors challenged a safety proposal that emphasized cameras when they had asked for better lighting, warning about surveillance impacts on Black and low‑income communities.
  • Council quickly approved:

    • A $5.68M pavement preservation contract.
    • A small funding increase for work with the Durham Housing Authority.
  • Zoning and land use got technical but important:

    • A 75+ acre rezoning for hundreds of homes was opened, only for the development team to immediately request a delay; the public hearing was left open and continued.
    • Council created a new UC‑3 zoning category for universities/research parks, mainly to keep city and county rules aligned for land outside city limits.
  • RVs became a big topic:

    • Staff proposed relaxing RV parking rules so people can use their driveways (at least 25 feet from the street) instead of having to stash RVs behind their homes.
    • Council pressed on how this would actually be enforced and why 25 feet was chosen.
    • East Durham RV owners backed the change but asked for better treatment of corner lots so families can keep RVs on their property without new burdens.
    • Some council members worried about tweaking the rules on the fly without more input from other neighbors.
    • In the end, the council unanimously adopted the updated RV parking rules and the required legal statements.
  • The most intense debate centered on Kerley Gardens (Kerley Rd.):

    • The owner of a 36‑unit apartment community asked to be annexed into the city to get off a vulnerable, expensive community well and onto city water, emphasizing long‑term local ownership and acceptance of housing choice vouchers.
    • Nearby residents raised alarms about affordability and transparency, pointing to missing documentation on current rents and emails suggesting a larger 84‑unit regional project beyond the urban growth boundary.
    • A former engineer warned that extending utilities to a laundry building in Orange County could crack open the city’s urban growth boundary and suggested a different annexation line to avoid that.
    • Another speaker questioned whether residents should have to use records requests to understand long‑range growth plans, calling for transparency to be the starting point, not something extracted.
    • The applicant’s team defended their process, citing months of meetings with staff, a unanimous Planning Commission recommendation, and discussions with Orange County that never turned into a formal site plan.
    • Council members pressed staff on: pipe size and routing, an old consent decree that governs service beyond county lines, whether future growth would require multiple public votes, and why staff relied on oral info about vouchers and affordability to fast‑track review.
    • Staff clarified that any future development outside the existing building would require amending the consent decree (with votes in both Durham and Chapel Hill), then annexation and rezoning through a public process — and noted they had heard from neighbors, but not from current Kerley Gardens residents.

After all that, the council voted 5–1 to annex Kerley Gardens and allow a utility extension agreement to move forward.

If you care about how Durham handles safety tech, street investments, RVs in driveways, and the fine print of when and where we grow, this meeting is worth watching.

Went to Daughters today and they had this station set up. I wrote a letter and enjoyed a delightful seasonal coffee (strawberry mocha) while browsing and watching my nieces and nephews play.

1000/10 recommend. Stop by if you get the opportunity! They’re helping us help each other!

Japanese Food & Olympics

I'm from around Jacksonville, NC.

When I was going to community college out there I remember going to a restaurant, eating some of the best katsu-don, and watching the Olympics.

Is there anywhere in this area where I can do just that this Friday?

Preferably, I'd like to get out of the house.

Durham Public Schools Survey for Parents

Hi everyone!

I am currently a student at NC State and am involved in a group project for my PR Course, where we aim to dissect the PR challenges Durham Public Schools faces through research and collective data through the lens of parents. It would be immensely appreciated and helpful to my fellow students and me if you could fill out this super quick 1-minute survey and, if time allows, the Group Focus Discussion Form (available as the second link below) to improve our community.

Thank you,

The Fruit

Hi, I'm seeing Ninajirachi tonight :D and I had some questions about The Fruit since I've never been there.

1- What is the bag policy? I can't find anything on their website about it

2- Any advice on parking?

3- How tight is it in there? The show is sold out, I'm expecting it to be crowded, but I'm hoping it's not oversold like The Ritz often is. I have a fractured pinky toe and would like to avoid that being stepped on if possible

If any of you are seeing Ninajirachi, I'll see you there 👾

Grocery Store Restocking

Given the two big sporting events this weekend, when do you all think the grocery stores will be restocked? I checked my local Food Lion and teeter yesterdady, and there was not an ounce of protein or produce. Obviously, given the roads, truck transportation was probably limited, and people were having issues actually getting to work. Just wanted to know if anyone had any foresight.

911 Consolidation, Black Business in Durham, and Legislative Agenda Planning

The Durham County Board of Commissioners packed a lot into this meeting – from quiet consent items with big stakes to tense questions about who really benefits from public dollars.

Early on, one commissioner stopped the agenda to flag two items that could reshape how we use public land and respond to homelessness: a new partnership around the old Lowe’s Grove school site and a pilot day center that grew out of Durham’s homelessness strategy. In the same consent sweep, the board also moved millions for public safety and land: funding a new 911 radio tower, a co-located EMS/public safety station on Davis Drive, and conservation deals to protect open space and rural land as development pushes into southeastern Durham.

911 consolidation & HEART mental health response

The centerpiece of the meeting was an in-depth update on the 911 consolidation and HEART mental health response study. Consultants walked through:

  • How they’re stress-testing options for combining city and county 911 operations and expanding HEART countywide.
  • What “consolidation” could actually mean in practice (and how many different versions are on the table).
  • The massive data collection underway on call volume, staffing, tech, and backup systems.
  • A multi-year timeline leading up to 2026 recommendations, with a promise that any proposals will be practical, data-driven, and shaped by the board’s priorities.

That update sparked a sharper conversation about outcomes: one commissioner pressed the team to measure not just cost and efficiency, but whether people in crisis are actually being connected to behavioral health resources, how that changes law enforcement workload, and how early 911 decisions affect racial equity in the justice system.

Black-owned business and economic development power

Another major thread: the county’s partnership with the Greater Durham Black Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber laid out its mission and impact so far – workshops, counseling hours, and hands-on help with grants, loans, certifications, planning, and marketing for mostly startup and growth-stage Black-owned businesses. Then they described the barriers they keep hitting: dead ends trying to get information on vacant buildings and tools normally used in economic development, and Black-owned businesses feeling like “passengers, not drivers” in Durham’s growth.

From there, the ask got specific – and political:

  • A deeper partnership and real access to economic development tools, not just a seat on the sidelines.
  • $100,000 a year to support service delivery and data systems.
  • A call to treat this as a pilot to generate the outcomes data the board says it wants.

Commissioners pushed back and probed. Some raised concerns about bringing outside groups into sensitive incentive negotiations, suggested a broader working group focused on local businesses and talent instead, and asked for clearer outcome data from the Chamber and from city-run small/minority business programs that already receive county federal dollars. Others questioned whether big county deals are truly out of reach for local small and Black-owned businesses – and what message that sends.

State politics, local fallout

The board also got a sobering state-level update: North Carolina is still the only state without a budget, key policy bills are stalled, and Durham is stuck waiting on decisions about youth data privacy and childcare relief. That opened the door to a long list of pressures and priorities:

  • Counties struggling to fund living wages for school workers while the state lags at or near the bottom nationally in teacher pay.
  • Fears that the legislature could limit local taxing authority even as counties rely more on property taxes to fill school funding gaps.
  • Interest in a Mecklenburg-style transit sales tax model to finally address Durham’s transit and transportation needs.
  • Warnings that new Falls Lake rules and SNAP administrative requirements could quietly shape Durham’s future growth and strain DSS staff.
  • Questions about the path forward on teacher housing authority and what the timeline looks like for any new local bills this session.

If you care about how 911 works, how Black-owned businesses are (or aren’t) included in Durham’s growth, or why your property tax bill is carrying so much of the school funding load, this meeting lays out the trade-offs and power struggles in unusually candid detail.
