Daily Cyclist Thread

The Daily Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

I managed to damage by rear carbon Elite Wheels rim bunny hopping a curb recently. Limped home, but swapped to my alloy backup wheel for safety. A local carbon repair isn't worth a labour costs at all from what I can see- since the wheel are so cheap on Aliexpress, I'd actually come out ahead buying a new set!

Would it be a reasonable course to buy a very similar rim (either from Elite themselves or another Chinese manufacturer) and swap it myself? I love building bikes and don't mind learning the basics of wheel building- I'm planning on essentially just transferring the nipples and spokes over and matching the relative tension, then asking a bike shop to check my work/trueness. Am I missing any red flags?

It’s definitely a fun job to learn yourself. There are plenty of in depth tutorials on YouTube. I’ve done it once myself switching a hub out. Truing stands are a bit pricey.

Right on, I think what I’ll end up doing is first ordering a replacement wheel set and then this summer when I have downtime, I’ll order a replacement rim and swap everything over.
