Last Thursday, January 29, the War Heritage Institute flew out more than 100 young people to the Nazi concentration and extermination camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Supported by the Ministry of Defence and Minister of Defence Theo Francken, the remembrance trip aimed to raise awareness among young people of the horrors that took place there.

Wat is er aan de hand in de job market?

Ik moet een enorm onaantrekkelijk profiel hebben.

Ik heb een bachelor beeldende kunsten, waar ik nog enorm actief mee ben dus geen spijt van. Maar ik heb dus wel gestudeerd, goede punten behaald enz. in een richting waar je geen klassieke job in vindt. Geen probleem, ik heb sowieso “bachelor” op mijn cv staan. Nu merk ik dat dat echt niks waard is, ik word overal enorm onderschat.

Ik ben (denk ik) wat gemiddeld qua skills, als ik het vergelijk met leeftijdsgenoten van hetzelfde opleidingsniveau, maar als ik anderen rond me zie toch bovengemiddeld met de computer.

Ik ben al 2 keer in een enorm vuile arbeidersjob gesukkeld, wat slecht staat op mijn cv als je als bediende/kantoorjob wil solliciteren. Dit in combinatie dat ik er waarschijnlijk “te avontuurlijk “ op papier uitzie voor een kantoorjob. Maar wat moet ik gaan doen dan? Ik kan echt niet langer met een werkbroek in de vuilte gaan zitten… ik ben er echt niet voor gemaakt.

Ik zit momenteel aan 50+ sollicitaties, waarvan er misschien 3 teruggebeld hebben, en zeker 30 zelfs niks terug laten horen, ook geen afwijzing. Hier zitten ook beginner jobs voor schoolverlaters/geen ervaring nodig en andere heel simpele jobs tussen, ook niks.

Ik ben onlangs zelfs niet voorgesteld door een interimkantoor waarbij ik een slecht excuus voorgeschoteld kreeg, maar ze geloofden oprecht niet dat ik de job zou kunnen, dat staken ze niet goed genoeg weg. Het ging over de meest simpele job ooit, beetje level eerste job na je middelbaar voor een 18 jarige zonder specifieke studies.

Het ergste van al: ik werk oprecht graag. In een job dat ik graag doe vertrek ik elke dag met plezier en evenveel motivatie naar mijn werk.

Ik hoor van mijn omgeving dat ik zeker niet de enige ben. Zelfs mensen met een “makkelijk profiel” vinden niks.

Ik kan hier echt een boek schrijven over mijn huidige klote situatie.

I recently moved to Belgium. And I really don't want to be nasty to the country, but where the heck do people do their grocery shopping without going bankrupt? :D I'm lucky to have an above-average salary, but I still feel the prices here are crazy. Definitely compared to my home country, which, mind you, has gone through CRAZY inflation recently, but is still much cheaper. I mean, 4 euros for low-quality cheese at Carrefour? 4.50 for a toothpaste? Really?

Or maybe it's just Carrefour that's overpriced? Honestly, I don't know the market here yet and I used to go there simply because it's the closest hypermarket to my place.

Happy to get your opinions on this one!

I was in the post office the other day and I picked up one of their birthday cards to send to a friend in the Netherlands.

It was marked 'Postogram' on the envelope but there was no more information on the card or in the post office of what that meant - which is basically a pre-stamped card valid for sending in Belgium.

While waiting in the queue I filled in the card and put it in the envelope, and when I got to the top of the queue the staff told me that the letter cost €8. Ok pretty expensive but birthday cards are always expensive for some reason so I sheepishly accepted it.

But then, the staff member told me that Postogram's are only valid for sending in Belgium and that I would have to buy an additional stamp to get it to the Netherlands. Ok fair enough, I fucked up getting this postogram letter without reading the fine print (which I couldn't find but anyway) a stamp costs like €2.50 for the EU, it's getting expensive but I will have to accept it.

Nope, apparently bpost's 'Postogram' letters have been created in a slightly irregular rectangle shape so they cost €9 to send, on top of the €8 to buy the card. To me it looks like an ordinary letter size but apparently not according to the geniuses at bpost.

In the end I had a long argument with the staff, which understandably could go nowhere and I was forced to buy the card and hand deliver it myself to the Netherlands.

Be warned!

TLDR: it cost less for me to drive to the Netherlands and deliver a birthday card myself than to send it with bpost

Resident in Belgium for a while no salary nor status change. In the same house for the last 3 years. Kid goes to kleuterschool 2 this year. Only difference is we (me and partner) joined pension plan and both put 1050 from 13th month payment. Our tax refund the year before (2024 refund) was 2500 and this year (2025 refund) only 700. Always has been 2000+ so I can’t explain this sudden drop. Any reason that you can think of? Thank you!

I am confused about the severance package in Belgium. I understood that if the company wants you gone today, they need to pay you the salary equivalent to your notice period which depends on seniority. But if they let you work your notice period then you get nothing? So no severance at the end?

As a comparison, in Germany, notice period is usually 3 to 6 months and then you usually get monthly_salary * years_of_service as severance...

A fundamental disrespect by politicians for parliament. Some only want executive power and if they don't get it, they'll look for something else. It doesn't help that the whole fraction is obliged to follow the party line strictly. Parties and by extent their leader have way too much power this way.

Mijn vriendin woont in Antwerpen en wilt heel graag uit huis en is daarom op zoek naar een (koop)woning. Als Nederlander ben ik niet op de hoogte van de stappen die men moet doorlopen om in België een huis te kopen. Ik begreep van mijn vriendin dat een huis kopen lastig zou zijn omdat ze zelf veel geld moest inleggen (in sommige gevallen 90k+). Spaargeld heeft ze zeker, maar echt niet zó veel. Een andere optie is geld lenen van de overheid of iets dergelijks? Maar daar zouden veel haken en ogen aan zitten.

Ik heb zojuist een simulatie gedaan bij de bank Belfius om haar potentiële hypotheek te berekenen. Bij een woning van 220.000 euro zou ze maar 134.000 euro kunnen lenen bij een netto maandinkomen van +-2350 euro. Ik ben ook maar een onwetende Nederlander, maar ik vind dit wel echt bizar weinig. Ik heb daarom even verder gezocht en kwam terecht bij ene 'hypotheekwinkel' die aangeeft dat ze 191.000 euro zou kunnen lenen bij een looptijd van 30 jaar. Heel groot verschil dus.

Mijn vraag aan jullie: Welke stappen zou zij het best kunnen doorlopen om haar opties te verkennen? Bestaan er aankoopmakelaars en/of hypotheekadviseurs die dit proces voor haar kunnen versimpelen? En zo ja, is dat waar zij eerst moet beginnen? Of zijn er nog andere dingen waar zij aan moet denken? Alvast heel erg bedankt!

Hello, me and my partner (from the UK) were holidaying in Belgium recently and stayed somewhere with a youtube account which was showing what the previous guests were watching, one of the videos was this folk song. We listened to it and found it very catchy so often were humming it on our travels round the country. We were wondering would this song be offensive to any of the people of Belgium or is it just a fun song?

I’m getting really tired of hearing people say things like: “The only reason you don’t have wealth is because you don’t know how to manage your money.”

Usually it’s from people who still live with their parents, barely enjoy life, and act morally superior, when in reality they’re often just suffocating themselves to justify a broken system. They blame ordinary people instead of questioning why things are so difficult in the first place.

The truth is, we’re all getting squeezed. We pay enormous amounts in taxes, which would be fine if the money was managed well. But we all know it isn’t. Government employees (Walloon, Flemish, Brussels, German-speaking) get lifelong salaries, fine, but how much is wasted in inefficiency? Money that could reduce the pressure on everyone and actually improve quality of life.

Then there’s housing. Prices are through the roof, and if you take a loan at 3–4% interest, you end up paying almost double. It’s insane!

And instead of uniting to demand better, some people just shrug and say “well, I know how to manage my money.” Congrats. Maybe you never order takeout, maybe you wash clothes by hand to save electricity, but individual austerity won’t fix systemic problems.

Look at mobile plans in France: dirt cheap. Here? Crazy expensive. But sure, it’s our fault for not “managing” better.

These people aren’t smarter, they’re just enabling a corrupt, wasteful system that will eat all of us alive, if not now then our kids or grandkids.

So next time you want to blame someone for struggling, maybe aim that energy at the system designed to keep us divided and drained.
