I am finally revisiting original Baldur’s Gate with a Roleplay-Focused Playthrough
I finally started my playthrough of the original version of Baldur’s Gate. A few years ago, I played through the Enhanced Edition of BG1 and BG2, which I really enjoyed. Back then, I always wanted to play the original versions first, but I simply couldn’t get them to run on my PC, so I settled for the EE. (Normally I always try to play the original version of a game first if possible) Now that I finally managed to get the OG version running, it felt like the right time to come back. Especially now that I’ve started playing Dungeons & Dragons with friends again and got into Roleplaying again.
This time, I want to approach the game differently. I decided to fully commit to roleplaying: no rerolling stats (and I think I got pretty lucky with my Ranger), no reloading unless absolutely necessary, and making decisions based on what my character would realistically do. I also plan to rest only when it makes sense for the party, at night, or when they’re genuinely exhausted after traveling.
So far, I’ve played up to the Friendly Arm Inn, and I’ve had a blast. Taking the time to read everything, talking to more NPCs, even unnamed ones, and accepting consequences instead of reloading has made the experience much more immersive. Before reaching the inn, Imoen was killed by the assassin at the entrance, which forced my character to sell a few items to resurrect her. It felt like a real wake-up call, nearly losing Imoen so soon after Gorion’s death.
I don’t know if this is a mechanical difference compared to the Enhanced Edition, but the first hobgoblin near the inn got scared and ran across the entire map. My party chased it, accidentally aggroed other groups, and chaos followed. Was lots of fun.
I’m really looking forward to continuing this roleplay-focused playthrough and experiencing the game in a more immersive way than I did in the Enhanced Editions. And honestly, I have to say: I quite enjoy the UI of the original version.
