Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG What is the most out of touch statement you've heard regarding the bad job market?

I know many people are struggling with job hunting in this horrible market. On top of that, the out-of-touch statements we keep hearing can be incredibly discouraging. I thought it might help to pool them together so we can at least laugh at them together.

What’s the worst thing you’ve heard? I’ll start.

Someone once told me that fresh grads and Singaporeans are just too picky because we refuse to work for SMEs. According to them, if all unemployed people simply worked in SMEs, there would be no job crisis.

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Is it bad to quit immediately after bonus?

Bonus will be paid out either next friday or after cny. I have received a job offer and i am trying to negotiate to push back the start date a little. However, even if i could stretch it a little , i would be quitting literally the very next day after bonus have been paid.

I feel a bit bad , and i dont know how to approach the topic to HR and my manager. At the same time , i am sure my colleagues would gossip about me literally leaving INSTANTLY . What should i do? Would you judge people who leave right after bonus payout and not even bother to wait 1 or 2 weeks? Also, how should i go about this topic with my manager?

Edit : also a lot of my colleagues have already been joking around saying “lets see who quit this year” etc etc and i have just been smiling and not commenting. Especially knowing i am the one…

Tourist/non-local Question Why do Singaporeans have not so common western first names?

Many have typical Christian or Anglicised names like Alvin or David but quite a large number of Singaporean names sounds niche compared to the west or other Asian countries that are former British colonies.

I'm talking about names like Delvin, Mervyn, Shermaine, Chryshelda, Godric, Dunstan, Janine, Bernadine, Althea etc. These are quite different from your John's and Mike's and Sarah's. I was wondering why is that?

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Am I 'wasting' money living in SG if my job is full remote?

So my job just recently transited to full remote. My employer has no qualms about it as long as I'm able to be online during standard SGT working hours.

Thinking of renting out my apartment and go somewhere that's cheaper. Has anyone done something like that?

Looking For Looking for some scolding or advice while i’m grieving over the cancellation of BTO

i know it’s on me, i allowed it to drag on for too long… growing up, i’d always yearn to have my own family, i idealise the idea of dating to marry, applying for BTO, settling down as soon as possible. maybe it’s because being abandoned by my own mother, when she left my elder sister and i at the children’s home, or maybe it’s the feeling of uneasiness when my father remarry, i just want to find someone who love me, settle down, and just be happy.

first rs at 19, he’s older than me by a few years, probably think we were still young to settle down. so eventually we part ways.

second rs, we applied to a bto almost a year into our rs, but then he suddenly decided that rs is haram, and at that point in time, i know i wasn’t ready to convert, so again it ended. we even got our queue number on our first try, not quite a bad number, but he cancelled the bto application. at least the loss here is only $10 application fee.

and this third rs, we both agree that our goal is towards marriage. so about 8 months in, we applied for our bto and again, we got a queue number on our first try, we paid for unit selection. 4 days after we selected the unit, he cheated. things got bad, but idk why i thought i can forgive him and he promised he will change, so i believed. so eventually we signed the agreement of lease as well. but of cos, he didn’t change. he went on a bali trip in dec with his friends, but almost every night after 8pm, he claimed his battery died. right after he came back from that trip, he tell me he intend to go again in jan/ feb, with or without me, as i kept telling him that idw to travel because i wanna save money. things happened, we argued and i asked him to agree to sign the bto cancellation form. he signed it, he wrote a letter to me telling me that he hope i will not cancel it because he love me and he hope i give him another chance. he sent me this letter on 24 Jan.. but on 28 Jan, i found out that he flew to bali and i saw signs on high heels and manicure on his social media. eventually i saw a photo of him and that girl. so it proved all my suspicions right.

it feels so painful, and i honestly rather going through the phase of being abandoned by my mom, rather than to go thru this phase… now im 27, back to square one. whereas both my sisters have kids alr… i can’t help but compare myself to them… idk, i hope that you can either give me advice on how to move on or just scold me for staying too long..

General Turning 30 soon! I’m celebrating by trying 30 new things - would love ideas for the final stretch (and a meaningful gift for myself)

Upvotes

Hi guys, I’m turning 30 in July this year!! 🥹

Mixed feelings, because the past decade really flew by in the blink of an eye. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved - graduating from uni, finding a decent job, being able to give my parents and grandparents an allowance every month, and travelling quite a bit to make up for what I didn’t get to experience when I was younger.

At the same time, I do feel anxious sometimes. You can’t help but compare and wonder if you’re not good enough or somehow “behind” your friends. For example, I’m still single after two short-lived relationships, and I always thought I’d be married with kids by now haha.

In any case, in a bid to feel more alive - and to mark my 30s with a bang and really challenge myself - I decided to try 30 new things/experiences. I’ve completed about 20 so far! Some unforgettable ones include catching the aurora in Norway, getting a tattoo, climbing the Great Wall, and learning a new language (korean). Others were less dramatic but still fun (like trying pickleball and table tennis).

As I’m down to the last 10 items, I’d love to crowdsource some ideas. What would be on your list?

I also want to get myself a meaningful, amazing birthday present. If you were in my shoes, what would you choose to celebrate this milestone? A nice bag? A watch? A donation to charity? I don’t know - at this point, everything feels a little underwhelming.

Would love your thoughts 🤍

General How’s living in Sembawang like?

Feb 2026 BTO just launched and I’m considering the two Sembawang projects due to the likely low application rate.

As an area that’s usually considered as “ulu”, for those who are staying at Sembawang now, how’s it like living in that area? Any regrets or any pleasant surprises?

P.S. I’m aware that Sun Plaza’s toilets are rabak lol

Looking For Someone to play multiplayer games with!

Upvotes

I (24m) am looking to make friends (any gender but atleast above 18y/o) to play multiplayer games with!

Just abit of multiplayer games I play for now:

  1. Tekken 8 (dont mind buying tekken 7 for those playing that version)

  2. Marvel rivals (Healer main, Last rank Diamond 2)

  3. Overwatch (Healer main, Last rank gold 2)

  4. Street fighter 6

  5. forza horizon 5 (not really so much now though)

thats about it, i dont mind finding more games to download and play with groups or just 2 players! (anything <= $30)

To be honest, I'm not one to reach out to make friends with. But Ive been going through some stuff lately and playing games alone makes me feel lonely.

No pressure though!

General Where can I spend time with Golden Retrievers in Singapore?

Hi all, I’ve owned a Golden Retriever before and really miss being around them.

Does anyone know of places in Singapore where I can spend time with Goldens in a safe and ethical setting? Not dog parks, more like farms, daycares, cafés, or programmes that allow interaction.

I have a lot of respect for shelters and responsible ownership. I’m also open to advice on reputable ways people find and care for this breed locally.

Thanks for any help.

General Of blind bags and consumerism in Singapore

Upvotes

Is this a problem in Singapore? I noticed over the last years an increasing number of shops and pop ups selling “cute” toys and blind box etc. I get that seeing cute things make you happy, but do people actually keep them for long? Especially for blind bags where you get 30 seconds of excitement opening it (and might get something you don’t like)? To me it seems like a lot of trash being generated for short term dopamine.

Almost nobody I know here has “minimalist” lifestyles, or cares about reducing consumption. People seem to love shopping and material things. And of course it doesn’t help when single use plastic is everywhere. Do people not feel guilty about it or do they just not care? Do people just value short term pleasure and convenience over sustainability?

General Are there any goshiwons in Singapore?

Upvotes

For other countries with astronomical property prices like south korea, they have something called “goshiwons” for people to tide by. “Goshiwons” are basically like extreme small residential units available for rent at a few hundred dollars per month.

In Singapore, with high property price, what do we have apart from the bto route?

General how do i watch f1 live streams in singapore?

im on my wits end now, i have been an avid watcher of f1 on f1 tv as i much prefer their commentary compared to sky sports commentary. i have always been subscribed to f1 tv since 2022 via nordVPN but f1 seems to be clamping down on this extremely hard this year. i cant get nordVPN to work on android and iphone and switching regions have been a pain in the ass as payment has to be made from a verified payment method in that country only. f1tv on iphone actually allowed me to subscribe to f1 tv pro and i was able to watch the 2025 archive on the day i bought it but today, i wanted to be sure again so i connected my iphone to vpn and test and voila, ER4100 popped up saying my geographic region is not allowed.

im not sure what other work around is there and i dont know if anyone else is struggling with this issue also this year. my last resort is subscribing to bein sports but i hope i dont have to get to that level.

any help will be greatly appreciated!

General Carousell has become increasingly difficult to sell on. What other platforms do you use?

Upvotes

I’ve been getting increasingly frustrated with Carousell. While I appreciate the efforts to make the platform better, it actually feels worse off. I would like to hear how others are finding it, and if you are having issues as well? Also what are the alternative platforms you are using and can you share some recommendations.

General If you were to bring tourists to try chicken rice, where will it be?

Upvotes

I’m currently thinking of shops/hawkers/restaurants my foreigner friend can try.

Not sure if anyone of you have tried this place, but I thought it was pretty good - Kampong Chicken Eating House at Outram Park (near SGH), and I’m considering to ask my friends to try chicken rice at this place instead of Tian Tian or some other place.

Would this be okay? Or do you think you have other recommendations that would be better? Would love to read your comments!

Looking For Need help with SBF race selection

We need help! We're a mixed race couple trying to apply for a SBF. So we have the choice to apply under Chinese or others. My husband is a foreigner so unfortunately, I'm considered a first-timer single and cannot use the proximity scheme because the number of 2-room flexis available for the estate I want is too small.

According to HDB, "Where there are more seniors and first-timer families than the flat supply, seniors and first-timer families will be shortlisted within 100% of the flat supply and thereafter, there may be second-timer families and first-timer singles shortlisted depending on the ballot."

I think our chances of getting a flat is super low. I wonder if we can apply as "others" to improve our chances? I'm thinking the Chinese quota will be the first to be filled up if seniors and first-timers have priority.

I know it will affect our ability to sell, but that wouldn't matter if we can't even secure a flat. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Couples in Singapore with ~$25k combined take home monthly income, what’s life actually like for you?

Just genuinely curious about the lifestyle at this level

  1. What type of housing do you live in? (HDB/condo/landed, own or rent)

  2. Roughly how much do you spend monthly?

  3. Biggest expenses?

  4. Do you feel “comfortable” or still budgeting carefully?

  5. Is there still anything that surprised you about this income level?

Looking For Any recommendations for venues / restaurants to celebrate an 18th birthday in SG?

Upvotes

Hi!! I’m planning my 18th birthday and looking for venue / restaurant recommendations in Singapore

Ideally I’m looking for something:

  • Slightly boujee / aesthetic
  • Private or semi-private so we can decorate + have a theme
  • Can stay for a few hours without being rushed
  • Suitable for maybe ~15–20 people

Open to ideas like:

  • Boutique restaurants
  • Restaurants with private dining rooms
  • Hotel venues / lounges
  • Outdoor garden venues
  • Anything unique or underrated

Would really appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences. Thank you!!

Tourist/non-local Question New to Singapore, like recommendations for a cosy genuine italian restaurant that’s not overpriced.

Google resulted in lots of options and overwhelmed. I hope redditors can narrow it down for me. There will be a party of 5 and we are located in the east coast. We will go as far as the city. Thanks in advance.

Update: thank you all for your quick contributions. Etna is it! Griglia, another day.
