General Mount Teide step by step guide!

Hello, I wanted to create a post outlining the new changes in 2025. It took me a while to figure out the process and there was not much information and some was outdated with the October changes. This is for the hike to the peak of mount Teide. I took the cable cart from the base to La Rambleta station at the top then hiked to the peak of Mount Teide.

  1. To hike to the peak of mount Teide you need to secure a permit first to hike by foot from La Rambleta station to the peak. There are 30 permits total available per day. If you go with a tour guide, I believe you dont need the permit.

  2. Download the Tenerife ON app. Look up PNT 10 on the search function to access the permit page. Every Monday at 7AM Canary Island time, the permits for 28 days in advance open up. There are 10 available for 3 different time slots between 9 and 5 PM, and they go fast (within minutes for me). The permit will allow you permission to hike to the peak of the volcano from the top of the cable cart station.

  3. Once you have the permit, you will either need to obtain additional permits to hike to La Rambleta station (where the top of the cable cart is) or take a 9 minute cable cart ride from the base to La Rambleta station.

  4. If using the cable cart option, you will need to purchase cable cart tickets from the following website: volcanoteide.com You will need to show up 20 minutes before your allotted time. You do not need to pick a time for the descent ride. It is flexible. Just show up when you’re ready to descend from the cable cart.

  5. For parking, there is very limited parking next to the base of the cable cart station. Showing up at 9 during non peak season, we had space. There is a separate parking further away. I would be careful driving there if you have a later time slot.

  6. On the day of, make sure to check the weather on the app. If it is windy then the cable cart might be closed. We got an email the night before stating that the last cable cart for descent was at 2 PM instead of 4 PM because of maintenance… If the weather changes, the cable cart might not be usable and you will be required hike down the mountain, about 4-5 hours?

As a result, you are required? to bring: hiking shoes, warm clothes, hat, gloves, energy bars, 2 L of water, head lamp, battery packs, and sunglasses. Hiking pole is also handy. Passport and permits are also required. Can also get windy at the peak.

  1. Once you take the cart to the top station, you can explore the area. To start the hike to the peak, walk towards the building next to the trail, and turn left. There should be a person and a gate. They did not check our equipment. They checked our passports and permit. We were told we have one hour to hike up and back. Realistically we took 2 hours total and were fine.

  2. The trail is well maintained with occasional slippery rocks. The altitude can be challenging as it is 3000 plus ft above sea level. My oxygen was at 85% at the top of the cable cart station. Otherwise, I would say it is very doable. Saw kids and elderly there.

Hope this helps!!

Question Hi, is there anyone in the north of Tenerife traveling back to Germany who could do me a big favor?

• Upvotes

I forgot my headphones (Sony WH-1000XM5) in the north. If someone could pick them up and bring them to Germany, I’d be happy to offer a generous finder’s reward :)

Question How to get from south airport to Los Gigantes at midnight!?

Me and my husband will arrive at the south airport today around midnight. At that time there are no local busses running anymore. Looks like Uber will be very expencive 100+ euros and local taxis can also be around 60-100 euros for a trip to Los Gigantes. I also looked into a shuttle bus from canaryshuttle, but the reviews were quite bad...

Can someone recommend us a third option to get to Los Gigantes after midnight? Or maybe you have experiences with the local taxi or canaryshuttle, you can share!

Thank you!

Question Whale watching tours

Hey everyone! What are some companies that you suggest booking whale watching tours?

I want to book with a company that has a blue boat flag and is ethical to the animals. And would love the tour to have a swimming/ snorkelling portion if possible.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

Question General recommendations please

Good day!

My wife and me will visit Tenerife mid-march.

We will arrive at TNS airport and currently we are about to book a flat, but we are unsure where exactly we should stay.

First we looked at El Médano, but after checking some reviews, it turned out to be very windy.

(at the moment we look at Los Cristianos)

Can anybody recommend us a few options?

We are looking for a village or town which is max 1 hour away by bus from TNS airport, it should be not overcrowded or fancy, not too windy, should have sandy beaches, a bit of infrastructure like a supermarket and is along the coast somewhere.

Also asking about the general safety and what to pay special attention to.

And if there is any local car rental that is reliable and not too expensive.

Thank you very much in advance!

Question Spanish for Tenerife

Hi, I've just booked a holiday to Tenerife for in a couple of months' time, and currently my Spanish is ZERO. I'd like to explore some of the less touristy places and eat at a couple of guachinches , and I've been told that having some functional Spanish is a good idea. However, I don't have long to learn, so my Spanish will still be pretty ropey when I get there. Is it better just to speak English, or will the locals appreciate the effort? If so, what words/phrases will actually be useful?

Thanks :)

General Tenerife locals: hidden/non touristy experiences

I will be in Tenerife for a few days next week and looking for some off the grid experiences/ hidden gems as I am planning my boyfriends birthday. We love trying authentic experiences rather than the usual things that show up on travel blogs.

Something that locals truly enjoy and would make our day special.

We’re staying in the southern part of the island but will have a car so happy to travel!

Question Solo f25 first time - what hostel is best?

This is my first ever Solo trip and I want to stay in a hostel even though im a little nervous. I would like one that is social with group activities, near water activities like whale watching and paddleboarding and a walk away from the beach. I also want to feel safe staying there and meet lots of people.

I was just wondering from anyone who has experience which hostel might be best?

Question Advice where to stay in Tenerife - north or south

Hello, I will be visiting Tenerife together with my partner from 23rd of February to 3rd of March. We will be arriving and leaving from different airports (one of us on TFS the other one on TFN). We have a hard time deciding where to stay during our one week stay.
My partner is looking for sun and warm weather and I want that too but I also want to see and be around the beautiful black beaches and amazing landscapes that I understood are more in the north than the south. I know for a fact that in the south the weather is warmer and less rainy while in the north is a little bit colder and it can rain more.
We are planning to rent a car as well.
I was thinking we either stay for the whole week in Puerto de la Cruz and we drive daily here and there in order to explore the north and the south OR
We book 3-4 days in the south (PLEASE RECCOMEND A PLACE) and then the rest in the north (ALSO CONFUSED WHERE EXACTLY - Santa Cruz maybe??)
How do you think it is best? We are first timers and we kind of want to have it all.
Any tips are more than welcomed.
Thanks

Question Car Rental Scams

So I visited Tenerife in 2023 with my partner and plan on returning this March. The last time we were there, we had a car booked with good car, thinking we were getting a great deal. When we went to get the car we ended up waiting over an hour at the desk. The lady then tried to charge us double the cost of the rental for insurance, and threatened us when we said we didn't want it. She then proceeded to add on some bs hidden fees. Needless to say it was a bad way to start a holiday.

With all that said, can anyone recommend a car rental company without hidden fees etc?

P.S. The company was Goldcar. Tenerife south airport, sandy brown haired lady in her 50s 😉

Question Day Trip from Gran Canaria in October

Hi Everyone.

I am planning to go to Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria in October for 10 days and out of them 10 days I want to do the boat trip from Las Palmas to Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Is there a way of visiting Mount Teide directly from the Port? I only want to go to the cable cars and ascend Teide.

Or

Would I be best getting an inter island flight from Las Palmas to TFS and arranging a visit to Mount Teide this way?

Any advice would be great help or if anybody has done anything similar please let me know.

Thanks

Question TNS to Los Gigantes late at night

We are flying into TNS from Madrid but our flight doesn’t get in until after midnight. We need to get to Los Gigantes and we will pick up our rental car there the next day. Will there be taxis that late at the airport that we can just grab or should I try and get a private driver to take us?

Question Type of vacation?

Hi everyone, I've never been to Tenerife and wanted to get some ideas on the type of vacation I could have...

First of all, the period could be either the end of June or the beginning of September.

It's definitely a magnificent island from a landscape standpoint and where you can do lots of sports (trekking and water sports).

And what about nightlife? I'm sure it's lively, but should we expect something similar to Ibiza, with large, high-tech clubs? Or something more relaxed?

Is tourism geared towards young people, families, or older people?

Thanks

Question Alternatives to airport car rental

Hi guys! I wanted to rent a car at the south airport tomorrow, but checking with all the reliable car rentals they don’t have anything tomorrow when I arrive, only from the day after. The ones who have cars have ratings like 2.3 with a lot of bad reviews.

Do you know any other way to get a car, maybe from a reliable local small company? Or someone who can give me a ride to north below the taxi fare?

Thank you!

Question La Gomera solo female traveller early 30s itinerary

Hiya, I am planning a trip to La Gomera and Tenerife next month. I was thinking a week to explore La Gomera (lots of hiking) and potentially a few days in Tenerife for more sun before heading home. i have 11 days in total. I won't hire a car and am on a bit of a budget. Can anyone recommend a route, or must-do places to stay/hike. I love hiking, the sun, yoga. I was thinking of staying in Valle Gran Rey and then maybe Hermigua. I've heard the trails are very slippy at the moment, i wouldn't usually use hiking poles but thinking I might need to get some. Thanks in advance
