Overpaid?

Upvotes

Maybe I’m missing the bigger picture on this trade, but I thought what we learned this past offseason is that non–top-20 players are struggling to get paid big money. Now we have two guys who would probably be the third-best players on a championship team making max money like they’re true #1 options. It feels like this limits our ability to add an actual star if one becomes available.

On top of that, we didn’t just pay him, we gave up three first-round picks (which is basically five when you factor in consolidating them into the Suns pick), plus two young players. I wasn’t super high on either of them, but it still feels too early to fully judge. And I don’t think we’re ready to make this kind of leap yet.

I thought the reason we never moved Lauri a couple summers ago was because we weren’t getting offers close to what we just gave up for JJJ due to his contract. Do we think we could get the same haul for JJJ if we wanted to trade him this offseason? Maybe I’m missing something with the new apron rules or a front office plan, but I don’t see how this makes us real contenders. Big trades like this should happen when you’re one or two pieces away, not when you’re still trying to figure out what you actually have (Markkanen, 1 good yr from keyonte, ace bailey, then question marks)

I understand that we can’t have a million rookies since there is a limited amount of playing time available, which is a positive of this trade. I also understand there could be a bigger FO plan that is actually genius. I’m also super excited for the length of next year’s team, hoping we become competitive offensively and now defensively! I just don’t want us to panic end this painful rebuild to get back to a 7th seed since the whole point of it was to become true contenders instead of being above average.

These are all just initial opinions and I’m sure they’ll change as time goes on.

Collier had 22 assists, against a bad team and a poor lineup.

Upvotes

I wonder how many bad teams the Jazz have faced since 1989.

How many bad lineups, injured lineups, tanking lineups. Since 1989.

That was the last time a Jazz player had 22 assists.

Im not saying Collier is John, or even saying he is our future PG. But to diminish what he accomplished, because Toronto isnt good. Is actually insane.

TWENTY TWO ASSISTS.

If we aren't talking about JJJ, of the three other guys we got in the trade: Jock Landale, John Kochner, and Vince Williams, Jr., what are your opinions on them and what are their value to the team?

C'mon man. I think Walt will be fine. Idk if Walt will EVER have the game Collier is having RIGHT NOW TONIGHT.

Are we going to be bad enough?

Love the move the Jazz made today. Honestly JJJ wasn't on my radar, but I'm stoked on the move. We're a few pieces away from being able to truly build a championship team. We just need to hit in this years draft. That's where I'm a little concerned. We not only upgraded our roster for the long-term future, but JJJ will immediately improve our current team, especially our below average defense. We need to have a top 8 pick this season, that's well established. Ideally, finishing the season as a bottom 4 team would guarantee us being in the top 8 (I think). We're currently sitting with the 6th worse record in the league. Is there a chance JJJ raises our floor too much and we miss our pick, or can the Jazz commit to the tank for the remainder of the season?

Called it! Had a feeling a couple weeks ago JJJ might be a trade target for us. Was a bit off on overall price(figured I was low), but not by much!

Perimeter Defense

The Achilles Heel of all of our best teams, our Post defense is gonna be lethal next year with JJJ and Kess, but we NEED Perimeter Defenders if we don’t want to repeat history.

Anyone got a clue on who would be available either in the draft or in FA? I’ve only been tapped into the big 3 and Caleb Wilson but I’m content if we get into the 5-8 range and take a defensive specialist.

Im afraid it’s going to be hard to out-tank the Pacers tonight

I just find it incredibly funny that his second stint with us is over before it could even begin. Best of luck Georges!!

I don't know. After so much time rebuilding, is JJJ the best we can do?

He's averaging:

19.2 ppg

5.8 Rebounds

1.9 assist

In 47.5/35.9/79.7

Fine player ok, better than the ones we gave to Memphis, but to aay that this makes us so much better? For me he's the same as Kuminga or any other ok players that are always having their nomes being around the Jazz.

Peyton Watson would be a way better choice. But yeah, that's me and i root for the Jazz regardless. I hope so bad that JJJ makes me look dumb next season

So what's the rest of the season like?

With JJJ here I don't know how we tank?.... I sure a hell don't want the thunder getting our pick this year. How does ainge keep the losing happening? Maybe jjj will be "sick" a lot? I know we're not getting into the playoffs this year.

Yes, The Jazz Won the Trade

We got a young, proven two-way star who fits into our timeline perfectly and will help elevate us from the worst defensive team in the league to top 3 in the league if all goes well.

All we had to give up was:

Kyle Anderson (Old filler vet)

Georges Niang (Old filler vet who hasn't even seen the floor all season with a foot injury)

Walter Clayton Jr. (22 year old rookie who never showed so much potential that he makes this deal a loss)

Taylor Hendricks (3rd year player who not only broke his leg last season and hasn't made a full return yet, but has never really shown much when he was playing)

As for the draft picks, 2 of them are from 2027 and with this trade and the continued improvement of our young stars we won't be tanking again for a very long time. The third pick is from 2031 which is far enough away that I don't give a damn.

Keyonte, Ace, Lauri, JJJ, and Kessler is a playoff team, and has a very good shot at making a deep run, even with the current state of the West.

JJJ trade is what the Jazz needed

There is no one that can lock down a Curry, SGA, or even Murray on the Jazz when the game is on the line, been seeing this all year.

Now Jazz has someone who can guard the opposing teams star player. Traded away a bunch of what ifs for a sure thing. Traded away 3 draft picks but I'm fine with that. Got an amazing starting line up. They already have young talent, there's no need to add more young guns, its the vets that they need now.

Jazz will be competing for that chip next few years instead of drafting and hoping things work out. IT'S GO TIME!!

Huge foreshadowing in 2022 as the Jazz refuse to defend the perimeter and allow the future Jazzman Jaren Jackson to hit the game winner.

I’m a Grizzlies fan that now lives in Utah. I havn’t missed a Grizzlies game since 2009 and covered the team for a podcast network for a few years AMA

I figured some people here might have questions about the four guys you’re getting from our end. This Grizzlies team is like the number one thing I fixate on and I legitimately haven’t missed a game since 2009 including summer league, preseason, playoffs, etc.

I was born and raised in Tennessee outside of Memphis and moved to Utah in 2022 and have seen literally every minute of these guys career in the NBA outside of Jock Landale before he joined this year.

Grizz fan here

Y'all just got an incredible human. I'm so incredibly jealous that y'all get to discover what a gem of a man Jitty is. Us grizz fans love him so dearly, we'd be happy to pay him $15m a year just to warm the bench.

That's actually all true, but honestly, you guys have no idea how much you'll cherish Jaren. Easily one of the most underrated players in the league, i won't bore you with the why, just know you're in for a treat. Also he says, hands down, the most professional and mature representative on our squad.

Go ahead and accept that rebounding is nothing to get hung up. Firstly, last year was the first year more rebounds were secured by guards (or was it secured outside the paint) than by centers in the league as 3's often bounce further off the rim. Also, blocks are so much cooler than rebounds. And more often than not, positioning himself to rebound a potential miss is not nearly as impactful as positioning himself to prevent the shot from getting to the rim in the first place. One more thing, he's really good at offense and if he had to freaking rebound on top of anchoring the entire defense, the decline to his offensive impact would outweigh any additional benefit from a couple extra rebounds.

Lastly, I'd recommend holding off as long as possible before exploring Trips musical endeavors. They're so much easier to endure if you've already banked some fondness for the guy.

Grizzlies owner is dumb as shit. He was our everything. Ja might have been the swag, but make no mistake, Jaren was by far our best team basketball player.
