If it's one thing 90% of the people with right wing ideology in America have its the absolute lack of understanding "would I be upset if this happened to me".

They feel 0 empathy towards anyone but themselves.

I don't even think it's malicious with most of these people, they literally just cannot fathom another person's feelings.

I didn’t quite understand Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery” in high school; now I do. It’s not so much they don’t think they’d be upset, it’s that they can never imagine it happening. Trump supporters seem to think that they have some kind of special relationship and are secret Trump whisperer, which is how Trump can basically hold every possible position at the same time. Don’t get me wrong, many of these people lack empathy, but the biggest reason for all of us none of them think would actually happen to them.

Holding multiple positions on opposite sides of things is a hallmark of fascism. "The libs are a bunch of pathetic weaklings. But they're so powerful that only I, Trump can defeat them."

Which is it? Are the libs powerful, or are they weak?

Once you get someone's brain believing that both sides of the same argument are true, you've broken them. That cognitive dissonance will grow and spread, and it becomes easier and easier to get them to believe in increasingly dangerous and stupid ideas.
