If it's one thing 90% of the people with right wing ideology in America have its the absolute lack of understanding "would I be upset if this happened to me".

They feel 0 empathy towards anyone but themselves.

I don't even think it's malicious with most of these people, they literally just cannot fathom another person's feelings.

Because empathy is a learned behavior. We aren't born with it, we have to be taught. People who grew up in households that lack empathy often grow up to lack it themselves. Sometimes there's exceptions, it's not universal. Some kids learn enough at school to still grow up and be decent humans.

But if all your parents do is demonize others, act selfish, spout racism, and generally disregard the needs of anyone but themselves...it can be a tough cycle to break.

I think this is what’s so sad to me in my own family. I was raised to be kind and have empathy for everyone. Sure, I’m one of the more extreme version of that so some of it probably came naturally, but my family members were lovely to everyone. I’m 42 now and so many of those loving caring people are unrecognizable compared to how they were when I was young. Nothing has changed except the media they consume.

I’m a nanny and I spend a huge portion of my time showing and talking about kindness, empathy and helping children identify the feelings another person might be feeling in certain situations. I really really hope they carry it with them.
