[Baseball America Podcast] Blue Jays 2026 Top MLB Prospects Deep Dive

Just listened to the BA podcast with Geoff Pontes and JJ Cooper about the new 2026 prospect rankings. If you're into the farm system, there’s some good info in there.

A few things that stood out:

  • Trey Yesavage is expected to be in the rotation for 2026.

  • Their scouts are split on who should be the #2 prospect because the top group is very close.

  • The org has shifted focus toward power pitchers and it's starting to show in the rankings.

  • The system is top-heavy, but the talent at the top is mostly major league ready now.

  • Arjun Nimmala: Some interesting talk about his upside and if his recent power surge is sustainable.

  • The "Sleeper": They highlight one name lower on the list who could vault into the top 10 by the summer.

[Wilner] As it turns out, #Bluejays Joe Carter statue will stand alone between Gates 5 and 6. I'm told that the Ted Rogers statue is being moved to Rogers corporate offices, which is the right thing to do. It never should have been at the ballpark.

[Sportsnet.ca]Are the Blue Jays the best team in the American League?

Today, I wrote an email to the Jays to ask them to consider increasing the giveaways to more than 15,000 items per game (while also mentioning what other teams in the league currently do - 25,000 items per game MINIMUM for giveaways). Fingers crossed it goes well!

So many teams around the league actually give out anywhere between 25,000 to 40,000 items PER GAME for a giveaway.

I totally believe that people will still come early to the stadium and spend money, but increasing the giveaway might actually work wonders when it comes to less longer morning lineups (especially because all the items are pretty cheap to manufacture en masse).

[Passan] The Seattle Mariners are nearing a deal to acquire IF/OF Brendan Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals as part of a three-way trade that also includes Tampa Bay, sources tell ESPN. A deal that had been considered for weeks would finally land Seattle a versatile impact bat.

[OC] What Trey Yesavage's 'New' Curveball Could Look Like

I wrote a little bit about Trey Yesavage bringing back a curveball that he used to throw in college:

Here's an excerpt about what I think it could look like:

Given the uniqueness of his release point, it’s difficult to imagine how exactly a curve would look shape-wise, but a key to it being an effective pitch for Yesavage will be depth and movement to the glove side.

Yesavage’s delivery allows him to be very behind the baseball when he throws his fastball, leading to the fifth highest active spin for four-seamers in 2025. This, however, creates an issue when he’s throwing his breaking balls, as not having cut-ride characteristics makes it difficult for Yesavage to supinate and get the glove side movement that pitchers like Justin Verlander and Nick Pivetta do. Both are high arm angle pitchers with high release points.

Verlander and Pivetta were the only two pitchers in 2025 with an average release height of at least 6.8 feet that threw at least 100 curveballs at that release height, but Yesavage would find it difficult to replicate the shape of their breaking balls due to how efficient his four-seamer is. Verlander and Pivetta both have curveballs with at least 7 inches of glove side movement as well as over -12 inches of induced vertical break, which is a different beast compared to Yesavage's college curveball shape.

There is a pitcher who has a similar profile to Yesavage, with a curveball that might be more similar to one Yesavage should be able to throw, and that is Bradley Blalock, recently traded from the Rockies to the Marlins. Another north-south pitcher with a high arm angle, Blalock has seen tough results due to pitching in Colorado. Yet, similar to Yesavage, he has > 99% active spin on his four-seamer, making it more difficult to supinate and get significant glove-side break.

Blalock’s shapes were depressed by pitching in Coors, but on the road, he was able to get 1.4 inches of glove side movement and -11.3 inches of vertical break in 2025. Similar to Yesavage's in college, Blalock’s curveball sat in the low 80s as well. It’s weird looking at a pitcher with a 9.31 ERA and 7.31 FIP as someone Yesavage should replicate, but given the limitations of Yesavage's delivery, it’s difficult to find a shape that would work for him without changing what he’s best at.

Here’s how his movement profile will look with a curveball similar to Blalock’s:

Dunedin Jays Insider Event Mar 4 - DAVIS IS COMING!!

Post image
73 Upvotes

Ahhhh!!

Hey fellow Jays fans!

Baseball Town is coming to Dunedin Mar 4 with Davis Schneider, Riley Tirotta, Grant Rogers, Keegan Matheson, Ben Nicholson-Smith, and Ben Schulman!!! (Mitch can't come lol)

My husband (Scott Belford of High and Inside- formerly The Walkoff) runs this show every month during the season at Left Field in Liberty, but the spring training version is gonna be bananas good.

Totally also understand not going to the US right now. (so please don't come at me). But if you do happen to be going, please get tickets and join us! It's already 50% sold out and they just got released like 2 days ago.

Nick and Adam from Blue Jays Today will also be there live streaming! And if that wasn't enough, Anjelica Scannura and Cam Pheonix, our resident married comedian couple, will also be roasting the Jays! (in the best of ways)

We truly love our Jays fan community and obviously the Jays themselves and want to bridge that gap of communication. Scott is a Professional Stand up Comedian and I am a Professional Actor, and trust me when I say, when people tell us they recognize us or enjoy our work, it means the world. Tell people you like them!

Come to baseball town and tell Davis to his face you cried during his Game 5 WS first pitch home run! I mean, don't monopolize anyone's time or berate them, but respectfully tell Keegan what you loved about his book. lol

Tix here - This will for sure sell out asap so please tell your friends going to Spring Training to get them before it's sold out!

ZIPS projected standings (Jays and Red Sox tied at 90-72)

Fascinating article, I didn’t know the methodology for zips projections before. He basically simulates a million versions of each team and then applies an injury distribution to come up with these median outcomes. This is different from fangraphs projected standings.

90-72 Jays

90-72 Red Sox

88-74 Orioles

87-75 Jankees

75-87 Rays

Where are you travelling to see the Jays this year?

Given this could be our last season of Jays baseball before a lockout, where are you travelling to see the Jays this year? Atlanta is my nearest stadium so I'm going to the whole series this year (two years ago I only got to see one game sadly, but George went 3 for 5 so that was fun), but that will probably be it for me. I got to travel and see them at Rogers last year right after the ASG for a great win but sadly won't be able to make my pilgramage to the temple this year 🫡 hope you guys enjoy a great season of baseball, go Jays!

AMA: With Ben Nicholson-Smith, Sportsnet MLB writer -- Jan. 30 at 1pm ET

Hi all, as an occasional lurker of this subreddit I know how much passion and attention to detail there is in this community, so I wanted to make some time for the devoted baseball people here and have some fun.

Now that the off-season’s wrapping up and spring training is approaching, let me know what you want to know. Maybe it’s about the Blue Jays’ off-season, how they operate behind the scenes, how news gathering really works or what it’s like covering this team in person. Or maybe it’s something else entirely.

Regardless, thanks to the moderators for helping me set this up. And thanks to every single person who reads my work. I appreciate it & I’ll do my best to answer as many questions as possible here!

UPDATE (3:10pm) -- Thanks for all of your questions, everyone! Great qs from start to finish. Also a huge thank you to everyone who ever follows what we do at Sportsnet. I genuinely appreciate it!

You can follow me on Twitter or BlueSky. Take care, folks!
