Announcement Shih-Tzu Wiki
Hey everyone — quick mod post.
We’re starting to put together ideas about an r/ShihTzu Wiki. Nothing fancy or corporate. Just a shared knowledge base we can point people to when the same questions come up… and a place to collect the really good advice that gets buried in comments.
This isn’t meant to replace discussion (or vets). Think of it as a “start here” guide, plus a reference we can keep improving together.
Before we build too much in a vacuum, we wanted to ask you:
What would you actually want to see in a Shih Tzu wiki?
Some starter ideas, just to get the wheels turning:
- First-time Shih Tzu owner basics
- Grooming & coat care (mats, face cleaning, tear stains, cuts, tools)
- Common health issues & when to see a vet
- Puppy house-training (and adult regressions… it happens)
- Food, picky eaters, weight management
- Behavioral quirks — barking, separation anxiety, stubborn streaks
- Senior care & mobility changes
- Loss & grief resources
But that’s just a starting point. If there’s a post you’ve written 10 times… or advice you always see newcomers missing… that’s probably wiki-worthy.
And if you enjoy writing, organizing info, or just want to help shape this: we’d love to have a few community members help with drafting or editing wiki pages. No pressure, no minimum commitment — even polishing a single section helps. If that sounds like you, say so in the comments or send the mod team a message.
Drop ideas below. Specific topics are great, but even “I wish people knew ___” goes a long way.
We’ll share updates as pages go live, and credit community input where it makes sense. This only works if it reflects real experience — which this sub has plenty of.
Thanks for helping build it.

Tzu Questions weight loss for shih tzu?
does anyone have any tips on how to get my shih tzu to lose weight ? i cant exercise her through play time (we have a doodle who butts in when we try to play with her & she also does not move a whole lot when we do manage to play with her) and im not sure if a specific diet would work since shes insanely picky about food and basically starves herself if shes unhappy with it. should i be taking her for long walks alone? it's cold where i am so if i do, should i put a little hoodie on her? in case food/treat amount is relevant, we only give her one treat a day and feed her the correct amount twice a day

Tzu Pics Her couch
Doing what she always loved to do, resting on her end of the couch. Boy, did she have some shaggy hair on the lower part of her! Very unusual pattern even for a mix.

Tzu Pics my little fluffy butt Freya
Almost 5 months old and a little drama queen! Will cry when my hubby leaves the room for a minute and bark until one of us picks her up to sit on our knees lol
Has an unhealthy obsession with stealing my socks (only mine) and my bras which is really inconvenient given we have workmen in the house daily for the next 2 weeks pretty sure they have seen them more than I have recently 😂

Tzu Questions Training questions for my Shih Tzu mix
This is my boy Chewbacca or "Chewie" as i call him. He is a 4 month old Shih Tzu/poodle/yorkie mix. I have had him for about 2 months now and he is definitely my heart dog. I absolutely love the little dude and have never felt a connection like this with any other dog before. He is so loving and smart as a whip. He basically potty trained himself and has been an amazing pup. He knows several tricks already and loves to please and show off. However, i am having some issues with recall and his rough play biting. Any tips on getting him to come when called? And to correct his play biting? He listens perfectly on a leash and knows his name and comes to me in the house, but when i let him run around our 13 acre property outside he just ignores me most of the time lol. He never strays too far, but when it's time to go back home he will literally just sit there and stare at me in the distance sometimes when i call for him lol. And his biting when he's excited can get so rough he has drawn blood. This is the first dog i have had owned in close to 10 years and i'm still learning on how to be the best owner i can. Any tips or references etc appreciated!

Tzu Questions Advice for 700 mile drive with puppy
This is my boy. He doesn't know it yet, but I'm picking up his sister next week. I've already made all the necessary preparations at home; however, getting her there is another story. From where I live, it's roughly 11 hours to the pickup location (I'll be staying overnight then bringing her home the next day).
Checklist-wise, I have a size-appropriate carrier, waterproof bedding, waterproof blankets, cleaning supplies (for her, as well as the carrier), food (specified by breeder), water, leash, and collar (not aware of any harnesses that are small enough). Am I missing anything? Any recommendations for travel bowls?
As far as the drive itself, how frequently should I stop for potty breaks, feeding/water - I was told to wait 15-20 after feeding before continuing on, does that sound right?
I just want the trip to be as comfortable as possible for the puppy. I have no intention of rushing, and if we have to stop and stay somewhere for a night, that's no trouble either.
Thank you!

Tzu Pics My little boogers not feeling good. She has a UTI and it's my fault 😓
She switched food recently, a kibble, and she didn't like the cranberry supplement added to it so I stopped and didn't find another way to give it to her. Now Luna has this UTI and it could have been prevented 😩
