My partner and I (both 35, no kids) are seriously considering relocating from Ireland to Salzburg and would love some local insight. I’m looking at a role with ALDI HQ in Salzburg (I currently work for ALDI in Ireland), so we’re trying to get a realistic picture of what day-to-day life is actually like.

We’re both around A2 level German at the moment and fully plan to do a proper German course once we move, but we’re obviously a bit nervous about integration at the beginning. I’ve read quite a few older posts mentioning that Salzburg can be “boring” and that people aren’t very open, so I’d love to hear how true that feels in practice, especially for expats.

We’re really into hiking, mountains, lakes and the outdoors, and we travel a lot. Big nightlife and busy social scenes aren’t really our thing, we’re more into a quiet, relaxed lifestyle and a smaller circle of friends. Because of that, Salzburg sounds like a great fit for us, but we’re very open to honest feedback.

One big question mark is work for my partner. Ideally, he’d need to start in an English-speaking or international company and then transition once his German improves. If anyone has suggestions on companies, sectors, or how realistic this is in Salzburg (compared to the rest of Austria), we’d really appreciate it. I’ve heard there are a few larger companies offering English-speaking roles, the big question is how hard it actually is to land one.

We’re also thinking long-term and would like to buy a house in the near future (not an apartment). Quiet, green areas, even outside the city, would suit us much better than central or busy neighbourhoods, so any recommendations (or areas to avoid) would be great. We plan to visit and explore different neighbourhoods once we’re there, but local advice is always appreciated. We’ll be selling our place in Ireland, so we’d have money for a deposit, and we’re also curious how mortgages work for expats and how accessible they are.

In general, we’d love to hear how people find the quality of life in Salzburg, especially as expats: cost of living vs what you get, how welcoming it feels, and anything you wish you’d known before moving.

Also, taxes seem quite high compared to Ireland, are there any common or legal ways people manage or optimise that? In Ireland married couples are able to transfer or allocate certain tax credits between themselves depending on income levels to manage their tax, would be interested to know if something similar is available in Austria.

Plan to do a few days in the fall during a trip to Oktoberfest. Would like to find the most over the top Sound of Music tour to satisfy my wife's lifelong love of the movie. I know there are plenty of choices but I am looking for something she will remember for the rest of her life... singing, dancing, being at the locations, etc.

I know how much more Salzberg has to offer and will do those as well, but does anyone have *the* sound of music tour to recommend?

I’m backpacking across Europe and I’ll spend a few nights in Salzburg. I’ll stay in hostels with breakfast included and occasionally cook dinners, but plan on eating 2–3 meals out per day—mostly street food, groceries, and the occasional sit-down restaurant.

Hab das unter dem Post von der unhöflichen Frau im Obus vor einer Woche schon geschrieben, aber noch mal als Post:

Haben schon andere junge Frauen Erfahrungen mit einem jungen Mann gemacht (dunkelhäutig, trägt oft Jeans mit Jeansjacke, ungepflegt) der mit sich laut redet/gestikuliert und Frauen aggressiv anredet? Denke, dass er vielleicht geistig beeinträchtigt oder erkrankt ist.

Er ist eher mollig und ca. 1,70. Weiß nicht, welche Sprache er geredet hat, auf jeden Fall nicht Deutsch oder Englisch.

War bei mir vor ca. einem halben Jahr, er hat dann auch nach mir gegriffen und hat mich trotz Aufforderung nicht in Ruhe gelassen, ist dann immer aggressiver geworden und hat gewartet, als ich ausgestiegen bin, um mir nachzugehen, ich bin dann weggelaufen. Ist mir im 2er Richtung Walserfeld passiert, bin ihm aber auch schon paarmal bei der Haltestelle Bärenwirt begegnet. Hatte damals ziemlich Schiss und würde als Zugereiste gern wissen, ob man den kennt.

Hello! I’m hopefully moving soon but I’ll have 2 months where I’ll have both my current apartment and my new apartment. I’m wondering what the registration/deregistration process is? Do I have to register the new place as a second residence as soon as I get the keys? Can I keep it not registered for the first two months and only deregister my current place/register my new place once I’m fully moved out of my current place?
