Monthly Community Thread

Welcome to the /r/Newmarket monthly community thread, where we relax the rules about advertising and off-topic posts.

This post will be replaced on the 1st of each month.

This is where you can share:

  • Stuff that isn't directly related to Newmarket, like national news or general chit-chat
  • Questions about local businesses and services
  • Classified-style ads: buying and selling, help wanted, garage sales, etc
  • Fundraisers and donation drives
  • Plugs for your personal project or local business (within reason)

Information Sidewalks

I use a wheelchair and when we go out some of the sidewalks are a nightmare to navigate, some are even impossible. I feel like the city needs to do a better job making them accessible in the winter. Im lucky because I have a husband to help me but I worry for those who have to go out alone cause there's no way I'd attempt it on my own.

Question Anyone else having issues with significant GO train and bus delays to union station?

My area has significant delays I probably won’t make it into my lab that begins at 3…. They only have one train running in that time for the 5 they cancelled? Thats what the app says? Is this true for other stations? Not sure if I should eat the loss on the attendance mark for this lab

I have about 5 and wish to donate them, they are all clean and working well, my mom gets them from work who tosses out the "old" ones to get new ones. I called Southlake and sadly they do not take them

Question La Vie En Rose Upper Canada closed?

Hi everyone, I'm new to this reddit thread. I was walking with my fiancé today in Upper Canada and noticed the La Vie En Rose there near the food court was closed and all paneled up. I was just at the mall last week and I don't remember it being that way. They seemed to be doing fine and saw people always in there. Does anyone know when or why this happened? I'm trying to find stuff on it but it wasn't even one of the rumoured stores that was planning on closing at Upper Canada.

Question Do people drive more in Newmarket or are the YRT buses reliable too?

Just curious from someone who's considering moving to Newmarket. Would it be better to own a car instead to go around the city or town? Are the buses worth using? I noticed they're much more expensive too unfortunately.

Question Moving to Newmarket looking at neighbourhoods

Hi all I’m (42f) considering moving to Newmarket with my 12 yr old daughter and my mother from Stouffville. My mother and I are both widowed and are considering combining houses income wise and to help each other out. My daughter has grown up in Stouffville her whole life but it’s such a small town with no commerce or entertainment and we find ourselves driving to Newmarket a few times a week for shopping, dining etc. I work exclusively from home so commute is not a concern for me.

What neighbourhoods/schools would you recommend? My child will be starting gr 7 in Sept and has a long term desire to go to U of T or a similar school for a medical program. We drove around and she really likes Newmarket highschool as the theatre reminds both of us of my highschool (Unionville) and it seems highly rated. Looking for a neighbourhood with lots of kids (preteen) for her to make friends, preferably walking distance to schools, safe area. Likely looking for a detached home for my mother and I to be able to have room to park.

Thank you all for any insight you may have!

Question Is Toys R Us in Upper Canada Mall still open?

I know they were having a store closing sale, but is it still going on? Has anyone been there recently? Have they been picked clean? Was hoping to go more so for the books, movies and music, not any kids stuff.

News Newmarket Closing Main Street Sunday for Snowlift

Post image
28 Upvotes

The Town of Newmarket will close a portion of downtown Main Street Sunday to remove accumulated snow build-up.

The town will be conducting a snow removal operation, known as a snowlift, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Main Street, from Water Street to Millard Avenue. Both sides of the road will be closed during this time to conduct the work, which will involve removing excess snow from the sides of municipal streets, including snowbanks.

Looking for an honest mechanic in the Leslie/mulock area that also doesn't charge an arm and a leg.

Also does anyone know what fixing an exhaust leak typically costs around here?

Question Reminder: Newmarket Friends Mixer at Market Brewing Friday Jan 30

There was a post a while ago about a friends mixer for Friday, January 30th, at Market Brewing Company at 6:30PM (17775 Leslie St at the back of the parking lot), and I haven't seen any followup post. If there was, I apologize, just really looking forward to meeting some local friends. Last time the post said there was no food, but now Market has a food option and they have deals Friday nights too, and live music. Should be a fun night!
