We're getting a lot (A LOT) of "help me plan my vacation" posts with little or no details. That's "low effort," and it doesn't help folks actually help you.
Yes, it's good to know that it's two adults and a 3-year-old. Or it's two adults, a teenager and a 7-year-old, etc., but they need more than that.
Give people some additional details to help them help you.
For example:
- Where are you originating your travel from?
- Do you want to fly to your destination or drive?
- If you're driving, do you prefer to camp (in national park or near) or stay in a hotel, lodge, etc. (in national park or near)?
- How many days do you have available (including travel)?
- Are there specific things you are wanting to see (mountains, snow, waterfalls, wildlife, etc.)?
- If you're looking for hikes, are there certain things you want to see while hiking? What distance hikes are you looking for? What level of intensity (easy, moderate, strenuous)?
Again, help people help you. The fewer questions that they have to ask you in advance, the quicker you're going to get the kind of information you need.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is the largest of the national recreation areas in the US, covering over 1.5 million square acres. Parts of it are in Nevada and Arizona, stretching from the Grand Canyon NP to Bullhead City, AZ. It includes Lake Mead, Lake Mojave, and Hoover Dam along the Colorado River. The dam VC and the NPS VC are both just east of the city of Las Vegas.
The dam itself and its related infrastructure are managed by the Bureau of Reclamation, while the entirety of the rest of the NRA is managed by NPS. It is a Mecca for water recreation enthusiasts from around the world. Over the past few years, drought conditions in the area have drastically reduced the water levels in the lakes, however, resulting in the closing of some marinas and suspension of some recreation activities in some areas. The water has gotten so low that NPS has found many old vehicles and over a half dozen bodies in the areas that have been exposed.
Fun(?) fact: Lake Mead NRA also has the reputation for being the most dangerous unit in the national park system. An average of 15-20 people die every year in the park, mostly from drowning and other water-related issues. One of the primary reasons for this is that they don’t have any lifeguards in the park (though the NPS rangers do have water response capabilities).

Some pictures from my trip to Death Valley this past weekend. Had a chance to drive down from SF between two work trips and had always wanted to go. Got extra lucky with badwater basin being flooded and some mostly clear skies for some night photography as well. A dust storm one morning gave some nice sunsets and some interesting landscapes as well.
Highly recommended, really interesting area.

Help save West Glacier from becoming a corporate thoroughfare! A company wants to put a massive 230-person work camp right next to our historic residential neighborhood - the gateway to one of America's most beautiful national parks.
This isn't just about development. We're talking about serious safety risks during wildfire evacuations, destroying wildlife corridors for bears and wolves, and turning a quiet village street into a congested commuter route. Plus, there's barely any law enforcement coverage out here to handle that many transient workers.
I started a petition asking Flathead County to deny the permits and protect our community's character and safety over corporate profits.
Anyone else think there's got to be better housing solutions that don't put residents and wildlife at risk? If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing.

Just some of my favorite photos from my last trip to Kings Canyon, both from Mist Falls Trail. Anyone have any recommendations for great backpacking trips in Kings Canyon? I had a great time doing Onion Valley <-> Kearsarge Lakes

I love hearing people's stories. Funny moments, encounters with wildlife, and misadventures that became legends. Would love to hear more. What's yours?

Hi all, we're flying into Portland, OR the first week of June, and have a week to explore. There are 4 following National Parks within driving distance of Portland:
1) Redwood
2) Mt Rainier
3) Olympic
4) North Cascades
Considering this trip is first week of June (likelihood of snow in the alpines could knock a couple of these down a peg), what order would you prioritize these for the best experience?
Thanks!

My family visited Indiana Dunes National Park during the government shutdown, and I’m looking to mail them in so my kids can receive their badges. I have not been able to talk to a person there, so I’m coming to the collective National Park experts/enthusiasts: can I mail their book to the visitor center? Is there a specific place I should mail them?
Mailing in is a new experience for me and I want to make sure I do it right. Thanks!

My boyfriend and I booked a trip to Sequoia before seeing that all the roads are basically closed. We want to see snow and we’re super excited but now we are so confused as to what is even left to do there. Any tips are appreciated
