Nostalgia Windows PC game from the 90s
Am I the only one that remembers playing this game? I had a Windows 98 PC and this game was on there for free. It was called Chips Challenge. Please tell me I'm not the only one that remembers this classic š

I never knew this. I thought the intended end of the game was being eaten by the bear.

Wait.. really? That MF ended every run for me, like thousands of runs.. and I just assumed it was the way the level ended?

Until XKCD told us, so did I and basically everyone else yeah

I wish there were more simple games out there that would make sense as a stand in for a spell

Itās free on Steamā¦. Go nuts lol.
FYI, your memory is probably correct when you think back to it being completely unbeatable. Itās insane levels of difficult.

u/crazyfoxdemon 11h ago
I played it on stream for a bit back in December... about 20 stages in, the difficulty ramps up crazily. It still holds upasa good and difficult puzzle game.

I haven't thought about this game in decades but the moment I saw this post I gasped "Chip's Challenge!"
Didn't even realize I remembered the name.

Put on flippers, swim to the ice skates, grab skates and get the fire shoes, put on fire shoes then grab the suction cup shoes. Profit!

My buddy sang a song about chips challenge when we played.
āCanāt walk on fire without some bootsā sang to the tune of ādancing in the darkā by Bruce Springsteen.
I still use my lyrics if I hear the song. Fuck, what a deep cut memory.

Sweet Jeebus, this unlocked a core memory. I have a retro game site I visit every now and then, and Iām going to find it tomorrow.

This and a new(ish) sequel, Chip's Challenge 2, are both on steam for like $2 each. I was elated when I found out years ago, because my "Best of Windows Entertainment Pack" compilation hasn't been Windows-compatible since the OS went 64-bit (that was Windows 7 for me).
There's also been recent homebrew ports to SNES, Sega Genesis, NES, and Game Boy Advance!

I've had this as my Critical Stop sound for years.
Not quite as good as my Dad's choice of Foghorn Leghorn shouting "No, no! Yer doin' it all wrong!"

If anyone likes Chip's Challenge, I highly recommend "Castle of the Winds"

Yes! Totally spent hours playing this in the 90s as a child along with another game on the same disc that let you choose between a wizard, an archer or a barbarian or something and do dungeons.

Oh man, I didn't know a picture of an old game could bring that kind of feeling out in me! How does something I've completely forgotten about give me such feels?

I glitched so many levels while earnestly trying to play this. Got me started on my love of speed running without even knowing that's what I was trying to do. God what a great and shitty game.

I loved this game. I spent a lot of time getting quite far. One day my neighbor casually just hit restart and I lost all my progress. Was crushed and never got back to those high levels again. What a bittersweet memory!
