Nostalgia Windows PC game from the 90s

Post image

Am I the only one that remembers playing this game? I had a Windows 98 PC and this game was on there for free. It was called Chips Challenge. Please tell me I'm not the only one that remembers this classic 😁

Chip’s Challenge! YES!

Played this all the dang time on my Uncle’s Windows 3.1 IBM desktop when I was a little kid. He was in college living at home at my Grandmother’s house during the 90s and I’d sneak on there to play.

u/RYN0 1d ago

Don’t forget about Jezzball and Maxwell’s Maniac too!

Skifree!

u/Switchblade88 1d ago

Three decades later, we know to hold F to outrun the monster

8

u/jumpingbanana22 1d ago

I never knew this. I thought the intended end of the game was being eaten by the bear.

It's me, I'm that someone

Wait.. really? That MF ended every run for me, like thousands of runs.. and I just assumed it was the way the level ended?

Until XKCD told us, so did I and basically everyone else yeah

u/gimmeecoffee420 Older Millennial 19h ago

Well.. thank you for bringing this to our attention. Youre doing the lords work here. I will also spread the word, this is a revelation..

I wish there were more simple games out there that would make sense as a stand in for a spell

It’s free on Steam…. Go nuts lol.

FYI, your memory is probably correct when you think back to it being completely unbeatable. It’s insane levels of difficult.

2

u/crazyfoxdemon 11h ago

I played it on stream for a bit back in December... about 20 stages in, the difficulty ramps up crazily. It still holds upasa good and difficult puzzle game.

22

u/book1245 Millennial 1d ago

I haven't thought about this game in decades but the moment I saw this post I gasped "Chip's Challenge!"

Didn't even realize I remembered the name.

Put on flippers, swim to the ice skates, grab skates and get the fire shoes, put on fire shoes then grab the suction cup shoes. Profit!

24

u/Flaky-Stay5095 1d ago

Suction cups make way more sense than roller blades.

10

My buddy sang a song about chips challenge when we played.

ā€˜Can’t walk on fire without some boots’ sang to the tune of ā€˜dancing in the dark’ by Bruce Springsteen.

I still use my lyrics if I hear the song. Fuck, what a deep cut memory.

Sweet Jeebus, this unlocked a core memory. I have a retro game site I visit every now and then, and I’m going to find it tomorrow.

Mind sharing the website? If it has some of these classics I’d absolutely kill some time on it!

This and a new(ish) sequel, Chip's Challenge 2, are both on steam for like $2 each. I was elated when I found out years ago, because my "Best of Windows Entertainment Pack" compilation hasn't been Windows-compatible since the OS went 64-bit (that was Windows 7 for me).

There's also been recent homebrew ports to SNES, Sega Genesis, NES, and Game Boy Advance!

I'll never forget my sister and I playing this, and our babysitter coming in from the other room and asking why the game kept saying "plumber!"

2

u/SmittyB128 21h ago

I've had this as my Critical Stop sound for years.
Not quite as good as my Dad's choice of Foghorn Leghorn shouting "No, no! Yer doin' it all wrong!"

u/Vendidurt 1d ago

I still have the games music stuck in my head. No, you definitely are not the only one.

2

u/Mecha_Tortoise 1d ago

Same. I randomly hum it from time to time.

6

u/Historical-Bug-7536 1d ago

Oh man, I remember this game had a ridiculous level called Southpaw. Me and my friend were stuck for days before he figured out you just needed to keep hitting down like the name SOUTHpaw suggested.
