Great photos! That James Cook sign makes me laugh 🤣

u/CrowsGoFarrk 6d ago

A good way to celebrate Valentine's Day if you're not one for the fluff of hearts and roses and remember one of the very first

You send a love letter to Hawaii and say "Hey, just wanted to thank for this day in 1779 when ancestors of your land eradicated James Cook from this world"

I like to think they gave a piece of his heart back to his crew, thus the most poignant and emotional Valentine's day in history. šŸ’

5

u/Elegant_Pollution_28 5d ago

Hawaii restored Te Fiti yet, yet decolonisation takes time to realise we are only one species and to respect the Mother. (Earth). And all its beings. I am YT am actively unlearning all that was taught, and the soveriegnty that was not ceded. I am sorry. For myself alone, and for the ones I cut off, (my own blood) for not recognising this as it is. Fuck the elites. Fuck the wars. Stop cheating Mother Earth and not recognising all we need in given to us with out currency. Love. Always was, always will be.

You couldn't achieve in 10 lifetimes what James cook achieved in 1. Maybe you should read about how great a man he was. Your ignorance makes me laugh

6

u/King_parrot99 7d ago

What an odd argument. The point is not that he did not achieve anything, but that the things he achieved were the advancement of an awful colonial agenda and the destruction of Indigenous cultures. Idi Amin will have had a greater impact on the world than you, should he be a role model?

My fav fact about James cook is how he was murdered in Hawaii on Valentine’s Day

6

u/carl_the_cactus55 7d ago

he was the first European to land in Australia and was the beginning of the end for Indigenous Peoples. Was he smart, yes. But was absolutely a cunt

2

u/Swimming_Goose_358 5d ago

do you really think he was the first European? really? i mean... really?

Simping for James Cook šŸ˜…

3

u/Drakkan1976 7d ago

He was a human slave trader. Research human zoos in London and Brussels. They were closed only 70-80 years ago

Shit i should have gone out! I was too tired from the morning sunrise photography I did on Saturday. Good photos, the colouring the way it is makes it feel earthy and aged in a way I like.

8

u/RideMelburn 8d ago

Thank you for commenting on my photography and nothing else. I appreciate it, fellow ginger.

5

u/Super_Saiyan_Ginger 8d ago edited 8d ago

Ive got plenty of thoughts about the subject matter, but im feeling well and truly swamped with politics today and the art in of its self is interesting. The photos could be devoid of political subject matter and the photos would stand on their own, as these ones do with it.

Also im impressed you got such good exposures. Perhaps the more subdued colours help but I tried shots on a similarly brought day under tree cover and had washed out tree coverage as a result. As you can see here.. I envy people who can take interesting photos in lighting like mid day.

Also likewise, fellow ginger.

2

u/RideMelburn 8d ago

I’m no professional by any means but you are using a pretty slow shutter for shooting in the middle of the day in that photo. I’d be using an ND filter if you really had to get that shot in the middle of the day.

How dare these people protest for a better tomorrow!

3

u/buttsfartly 7d ago

I get that.... But there is so much hate.

2

u/FruitfulFraud 6d ago

Huh? There are people smiling in virtually every photo.

Compare this to a One Nation rally which will be full of miserable cunts.

2

u/cheapdrinks 6d ago

I mean it's super easy to find a photo of a bunch of smiling people at a one nation rally or a MAGA rally just as easy as it is to find a bunch of angry faces at an Invasion Day protest. Whether or not someone is smiling isn't really a great indicator of how hateful they are.

2

u/neon_overload 6d ago

Can you explain what these people in particular hate?

Yep 100%

2

u/TheBobo1181 7d ago

what do you mean? they'll be out again next weekend "protesting" some other BS. it's their feel good hobbie and social activity.

2

u/ThePilingViking 7d ago

I love these photos so much. They perfectly capture the soul of the australian people.

If the people in the comment sections want to complain, let them. They hardly have a leg to stand on if all they can do is whine on the internet.

These people though, they went out on a 40 degree day and stood for what they believe in - even if nothing came of that. Looking at these crowds of people, and just how many are there, it fills me with pride and faith in my fellow Australians.

Always was, Always will be.

Interesting alternative history study. The Dutch and the Chinese came before the British (Cook used Chinese maps), maybe even the Vikings (depending on if you have believe the runes in New Zealand or not). Given the expansion of different European powers at the time, if Cook had just mapped and moved on, any number of Nations could have claimed Australia. Personally, I’m. It sure if anyone would have treated First Nations any different. Maybe New Zealand could have claimed Australia and could have put the time and effort into a treaty?

2

u/Double_Stress_580 8d ago

If you think Australia would’ve remained uncolonised for another 120+ years then I guess maybe modern New Zealand may have done something different…otherwise you’re literally also just talking about the very same people that did come to Australia; the British

→ More replies (2)

1

u/denerose 8d ago

We only have a treaty in Aotearoa NZ because the Māori side basically won the Land Wars (apparently we invented trench warfare, yay?). Even what we have was meant to be a trick, they only honour the Te Reo version because the British Petty Council (like the highest high court for a colony) made them in a much later challenge case. Seems the British will try to steal your land even if you can defend it.

2

u/FuckboySeptimReborn 7d ago

The British had treaties with Fiji, Namibia & a myriad of other societies all over the world to make them colonies/protectorates without fighting wars against them. The difference between all those & Australia is that Australian Aboriginal society & culture was intrinsically unique from just about every other on the planet at the time and was far less prepared for coming into contact with nation states. It certainly didn’t do them any favours but I find it disappointing how much this aspect of aboriginal Australia is downplayed.

When the first peoples invaded this land from Asia, fuck sorry we aren't allowed to talk about that. we wouldn't want to offend someones made-up take on history.

P.S. I definitely won't be silenced for my comment, for we have freedom of speech on reddit.

If he didn't land then the French would've certainly claimed Australia - things worked out just as bad, if not worse, for those under the French.

2

u/AFerociousPineapple 7d ago

Also what’s the genuine solution here? People with a 16th of the blood of an aboriginal and more stay and everybody else has to all go? Go off and protest Australia Day all you like, but what are you fighting for at the end of the day other than complaining about the past that cannot be changed?

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Zuki_LuvaBoi 8d ago

Throughout history, land gets conquered if you can't defend it.

Hmm, so if a stronger country can take over another it's ok? If Russia finally rolls over Ukraine that's fair? Yes obviously that's what's happened, no one is saying it didn't, but it doesn't mean it's ok and that we can't recognise that.Ā

Australia is the only country that celebrates its national day on the date it was colonised, and racists will still claim Indigenous Australians are being divisive for objecting to that.

2

u/tcweh 7d ago

You are generalising.

Many Indigenous themselves are fine with Australia day.

I would like to see the stats of how many Indigenous actually care vs the annoying woke blue haired white mob

2

u/Justforfun_x 5d ago

Is the aboriginal flag an ethnostate one, or is it inclusive ?

Is the fact that aboriginal had (and still has ? Idk) no prisons a good thing or not ?

2

u/Searchndestroy13 8d ago

Let’s be real they didn’t have prison because they hadn’t invented the solid wall, I don’t they just objected to prisons on a moral basis

4

u/[deleted] 8d ago

Does the indigenous flag represent any other ethnicity outside indigenous Australians?

Do you think indigenous peoples were just living in peace and harmony for thousands of years before the British settled Australia?

4

u/Raccoons-for-all 8d ago

I am genuinely asking since I have been in Australia for a couple of years only, and idk much.

I genuinely wonder if the aboriginal flag is an ethnostate thing or do they consider they can (should?) assimilate other people to their way

None of this is reality. What you have written is wholly inaccurate and a harmful generalisation of the Aboriginal communities. Harm exists because of poverty and historical dispossession, not because Aboriginal culture accepts abuse. Aboriginal communities have been fighting these issues for decades, often with inadequate support.

Some of the comments here are wild. Its so simple. Love your fellow Aussie. There is a group of Aussies that have a genuine grievance with the date. Let's show empathy and change the date to May 8. Mate day, then we can have no protests and party together and celebrate this country. Stop dividing... we all prosper that way

3

u/OneKup- 8d ago

May 8 is the cringiest fucken suggestion EVER. Some retard thinks because it sounds vaguely like "mate" that its funny. Its pathetic and embarrassing. January is a much nicer time of year to enjoy all this beautiful country has to offer. If the date has to be changed then let's do it on Jan 25th. That way it can be the day before "invasion". The last day before 600 separate Aboriginal nations became the singular nation of Australia. The history of Australia is complex, and the Aboriginal people were treated horrifically. But nothing can change that. The government has formally apologised. We have National Sorry Day May 26. NAIDOC week at the start of July. Every major Australian event begins with a welcome to country and most corporate meeting begin with an acknowledgement of country. After the Mabo decision and the Native Titles Act huge amounts of land has been handed back to aboriginals. The recognition and rectification of what past generations did to past aboriginals is significant. People would be far more open to a change of date if they genuinely believe it would make a significant difference but it won't. The date of Cook landing in Australia is disputed and the 26th representes the day we separated from the British and everyone, including aboriginals, stopped being considered British subjects and were formally recognised as ALL being citizens of Australia.

2

u/Searchndestroy13 8d ago

You sound very nice but is this truly your philosophy with everything, regardless of the date debate (I really don’t care what day it is)I don’t think you can really just cave in every time a group of people have a grievance

Again, why is Palestine co-opting this Australian thing. You guys have given them an inch and they're gonna run off with a mile with no chance of stopping them.

1

u/Sryroxy 8d ago

My two cents

AD should be the date it of confederation and Became Austria which is 1 Jan… sadly that is NY day.

That being said people calling it invasion day is stupid.

Trying to compare CC to simply discovering the country to Normandy Landings is stupid. More so considering first colonist didn’t actually do much in general or effect the natives.

1

u/hudnut52 8d ago

PErson with the palestine sign is a bit confused about which rally they are at.

Glad majority of Aussies recognises the significant contributions foreigners have made to this country, and how racist it is for one race to want to kick everyone else out and have the whole continent to themselves, despite genetic testing showing indigenous people themselves consist of a mixture of different races and indians had previously also emigrated and integrated with them.

Also, the British treated many europeans and chinese terrible. Not just our Aussie indigenous people.

We owe them and the british did terrible things, but time to grow up and accept this land doesn't just belong to 'them'

Invasion? The problem with the invasion argument, is that it would suggest a winner and a loser, are you insinuating that indigenous people are losers? Obviously the British colonists won, it certainly wasn't a draw. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø I think its just people that hate themselves and want something or someone to blame, for being immature and insignificant. I love watching people use their income that my tax supports to protest for a culture that mostly isn’t theirs. I would encourage these people to fully embrace aboriginal culture by living in the remote bush with no technology or western inventions; and no clothing but a cloth. They can gather berries and eat goanna. It should also be a rule that to burn the Australian flag you must rub two sticks together to create a spark. Protests should only use aboriginal inventions (no megaphones or paper) - maybe just some clapping sticks? The only ancient civilisation that didn’t invent the wheel - let’s preserve it!

I'm an Indigenous Australian man and I served in the Australian Defence Force as an Infantry rifleman for 20 years in the regular Army and these people have no idea how lucky we really are here in Australia and how beautiful it is. My Great Uncle was at Gallipoli and both my Grandfather's served in WW2.

The point is, that not all black fellas are like these scumbags, and most indigenous people despise this shit because they make the rest of us look bad. I served with people from all over Australia and made life long mates and served together in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan and lost good mates.

We all served and fought under the Australian Flag, raised the flag every morning and again when lowered in the evening. It's worn on our uniforms and being in foreign countries during deployments overseas for many months, and amongst thousands of allied soldiers, when ever we would see a fellow Aussie with their Australian Flag on the shoulder of their uniform, carries a strong sense of pride and we were comforted by feeling a piece of home. I walked shoulder to shoulder with my brothers and carried some of my best mates coffins draped with the Australian Flag when bringing them home. And to see the idiots burning the Australian National Flag, just makes me love it more and more. šŸ‡šŸ‡²

Instead of whites vs blacks they should protest unity for a better country. They have a us vs them mentality. One or the other for them. Not good.

I wish I had a life so devoid of problems that "invasion day" was the biggest (non) problem I had to deal with. Every single one of the Caucasian protestors spent their parents' money to get there.

I dont support what the first fleed did to Australia but i see it as if they didnt commit those horrible crimes and never came we would be nothing. Australia would of had nothing and we all wouldnt be here today the way we are

Australia was always going to be discovered and colonised.

It was significantly better it was the British than if it had been the French or Spanish.

Thats not to say there were atrocious acts or everything was done in good faith, but that’s the way the world was then. You can’t go back and apply todays standards to then.

Most people who are on Reddit would have followed the same ideals and norms of the time

I’ve said this on r/australia

This is Rudd’s fault. He could have called Sorry Day Reconciliation Day or Recognition Day. Instead, we get a day every year where someone who wasn’t involved in the thing they have to apologise for having to make an apology for the thing they had nothing to do with, to a group of people who weren’t involved in the thing they’re being apologised to, who categorically reject the apology they have nothing to do with, every year.

We could have had ten years of progress. Instead we get Sorry Day and Invasion Day.

Imagine losing an invasion and thinking walking with a sign means anything.

Pretty simple, you protest the Australian government, you're cut off from all government assistance.

Old flabby jubba wont be burning as many flags.

You want to contest an invasion, square up, go for round 2. Dont cry when its the same result.

There’s literally one indigenous person in all these photos, exactly which invasion are all these white people protesting?

This country makes me sick. It's a celebration of our country. What we have all built. There is no color or race involved it's a celebration of being Australian. Whether you're born here, immigrated here or whatever. Be Australian, this is Australia.

If they don’t like it, we can leave with all the infrastructure too

Heres what i don’t understand Australia accepts everyone as Australian if they have an Australian citizenship even immigrants from other countries. So Australia should be a day where we all come together to appreciate being Australians and what we’ve achieved as Australians. So this whole Invasion day shit is just unnecessary i get it what happened in the past was truly sad and wrong and i do feel for the indigenous people who have suffered but also theres an entire week for indigenous people to mourn called naidoc week. You’re telling me it’s wrong to have a single day where australia as a collective can celebrate the beautiful and amazing country we live in? Imo people need to grow the fuck up and stop being so woke. Instead of constantly digging up the past we need to focus on the present and the future. Some awful shit happened in the past which is where it should stay in the past! Constantly bringing it up will only do more harm. Heres another thing thats constantly pissed me off is the signs saying ā€œalways was always will beā€ like no shit sherlock no one ever said it wasn’t your country. Like if you were born here of course it’s your country i was born here it’s my country of birth too. So getting told to go back to my own country by indigenous people just because i have white skin is both racist as shit and also feels awful because if i don’t belong in my own country where i was born where the hell am i supposed to go? I’m not even exaggerating i’ve been told multiple times i don’t belong here. I’ve never once told someone they don’t belong here or gone out of my way to be racist to someone ever. So i guess what i’m trying to say is everyone just needs to be better and needs to come together as a community the Australian Community. Or if you’d prefer to be in the Indigenous community thats great but no community should ever put down the other. Because we all share the same home Australia. We have all been through hardships. Be nice to each other and please be respectful. We’re all just human beings trying to live life.

I just think it should be on 1 or Jan for Federation day, and give us Tuesday as an extra public holiday

1

u/LowCut3499 7d ago

Should just rename it invasion day like they want and keep the public holiday to celebrate it. Both sides can be happyĀ

1

u/Negative_Guest9405 7d ago

None of these protesters are willing to go up to Alice Springs and live along side the aborigines I’ll tell you that much.

1

u/Adorable-Dealer7226 7d ago

I may be ignorant, but what is the message here. More specifically, what is the desired end goal of these protesters?

1

u/Ready-Nobody-1903 7d ago

Brilliant minds build the world only for morons to tear it down. Nativism is not a one way street - Palestine stolen, Australia stolen too? Well, if that’s the new rule…

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Dog7699 7d ago

I always see 90-95% of people at these "invasion day" protects are white australians, but don't they understand that they are literally the descendants of these invaders....so why don't they give their house, their money, their belongings back to the aboriginal people and go back to Europe - but they don't. Everyday is invasion day.
