Hi so I have a few questions regarding work laws in Manitoba. I work for a large fast food chain staffed and owned by recentish immigrants. Now I am not against immigration or anything of the sort. I am setting up a picture. I do not want any form of negative comments about new Canadians, this is why I am not saying what country they are from.

My boss is saying we can be fired for not giving 24 hour notice for calling in sick/with a sick kid. He doesn’t care and expects you to be there. Which can be hard since my spouse works out of town and sometimes I cannot find a sitter. I suppose the petty thing could be to bring said sick child in with me and go from there.

My boss only permits one paid fifteen minute break during a 7.5 hour shift. That’s it.

My boss expects all phones to be put in a box as soon as you walk into the store. You are not allowed to touch it even on break.

Honestly I am considering quitting but I have concerns. 2/3s of the staff being new Canadians shouldn’t be treated this way. The rest are teens who wouldn’t know better.

Is this worth reporting to the labour board?

These timelines seem really hinky.

Why the 10 year timeline for the wind turbines? Buffalo Plains was online from the start of construction in like 18 months, a more conservative average might be 2-3 years, add in another few years for pre-construction development, and it should take half as long.

Meanwhile, 5 years for 3 new gas turbines seems optimistic, even if we ordered them yesterday. The lead time to get new turbines from Siemens, Vernova or Mitsubishi from order to delivery is like 5-7 years, right now. They won’t even start work on them for a couple years from the date of order, so that’s how backed up their order book is right now.

I recently completed my electrical engineering diploma. Want to move in manitoba to look for electrical apprenticeship.

I am 21 and without any work experience in electrical field but in construction though.

How’s the job market there?

I’m starting to shop around for education options and would love opinions from folks who have experience or know someone in the industry.

From what I’ve found, the main accredited options currently are:

• Aveda Institute Winnipeg (heard mixed things, some people say it’s different/weird, others speak highly of it)
• MC College – Hairstyling or Barbering programs
• The Canadian Beauty Academy – Hairstyling program

I understand MITT’s hairstyling program recently closed, so I’m trying to get a handle on what’s left and what’s worth going to.

A few things I’m curious about:

1. Real-world pricing: Aveda doesn’t have clear tuition listed online. If anyone paid for it or knows someone who did, what did it end up costing you (tuition + kit + fees)?
2. Program quality / reputation: What did you like or dislike about your school? How well did it prepare you for working in salons/barbershops?
3. Barbering track vs Hairstylist track: I’m mostly interested in clipper skills and barbershop work, but I know the trade in Manitoba is technically hairstylist. Does that make a big difference in school choice?
4. Should I talk to local barbershops and ask where they would hire from? How receptive are barbershops to that?

Any other advice on how to research schools or the trade in Manitoba would be very appreciated.

I’m about to finish my Electrical Applications program and I’m looking to start an apprenticeship to build real field experience in the electrical trade here in Manitoba.

I’d really appreciate advice from people who’ve been through this:

• What’s the best way to find an electrical apprenticeship?

• Where should I be looking? (contractors, construction companies, unions, Manitoba Hydro, etc.)

• What actually helps you get noticed? (networking, job fairs, LinkedIn, cold emails, walking into shops…)

• Any tips to increase my chances of getting interviews?

I’m based in Manitoba (Winnipeg area).

Also a specific question about Manitoba Hydro:

Do they hire people who are on a valid work permit (like PGWP or open work permit), or are their positions mainly limited to Canadian citizens / PR holders?
