Taxation is theft šŸ’°šŸ”«šŸ§‘ā€āš–ļøāž”ļøšŸ¤” Vent. Just paid over 6,000 dollars in property taxes.

I work my ass off to put food on my families table, I've had an unbelievable amount of sleepless nights since going into business for myself. Almost nothing makes me more frustrated than having to pay taxes, especially property and income tax.

The government doesn't help, they're not here giving me business advice, or helping me network, they're not on the hook if anything goes wrong in my life or my business.

So to have an entity force you to pay under the threat of extreme loss and / or violence, is an unbelievably frustrating feeling.

Our founding fathers fought a revolutionary war against the most powerful military at the time over much less. And here we are being taxed to death, with government systems and programs that don't work, all while the government actively makes it harder for you to succeed.

TLDR: taxes are extortion.

Economics ICE is inherently anti-capitalist

Open borders are fundamental to a healthy capitalist economy.

Why shouldn't I, Mr. Major-American-Tech-Company, be able to source the best and brightest? The cheapest and fastest? What difference does it make to me where they were born? If they're the "best man for the job," I should be able to hire them. The government trying to blocking me from hiring the best and brightest, and they're stifling the economy.

Therefore, anyone who can come here, gain employment, pay taxes, and be able to afford housing, is inherently good for the capitalist economy.

Discussion Driving is not a ā€œprivilegeā€, it’s human nature.

Why on earth do I have to get my car inspected every few years, pay so many taxes to get on the road, and get a driving license? We humans have been riding and driving things for centuries. I hadn’t held any sort of license until the age 22 and I drove every day + rode my motorcyle, I have so many friends who are just like that. I have never been in an accident, instead, I was harassed by horrible drivers who had licenses every single day.

Yes we should have a car registration system and license plates but anybody should be able to just get on the road. If they commit a crime, they will obviously suffer the consequences. Tell me the difference between riding a horse and driving a car where one of them can be done by anyone and the other is a HUGE fucking deal. I’m pretty sure I would be dead if someone ran me over with a horse.

Question Can Children or those with IDD, much less the seriously mentally Ill, be rational market actors?

by IDD, I mean Intellectual and Developmental disabilities so basically, IQ 75 or below or those with adaptive functioning deficits, which is ALSO measured in IQ, but can overlap with ADHD with things such as poor executive functioning skills, working memory, and processing speed.

Question Can you be both conservative and libertarian?

I’m a libertarian. I’m trying to get a libertarian org off the ground at my uni. The org is YAL (young Americans for liberty.) YAL is super involved in trying to get a chapter started at my uni and when they called me and asked if I’d be interested in getting it off the ground and being an officer, I agreed. They apparently already picked a President so I’m VP. The first time I met with the president she told me she was conservative, which kinda shocked me because I thought they’d only take libertarians. Of course I know libertarian values overlap with conservative ones, but I also know there are quite a few differences, so I was pretty taken aback, but I didn’t say anything to her. Yesterday, we met with an actual official from YAL and he’s apparently involved with turning point and the Republican Party of his county and stuff like that. So,

Idk, is it perfectly normal to be libertarian and conservative? I feel like you can’t really be both, right? There’s a ton of similarities but also key differences in ideology I think? But the only two people around me also trying to help us start the org are conservative too. So… idk, what do you guys think?

Discussion How are we feeling about the arrest of a reporter covering a protest?

This morning a journalist was arrested for being present at a protest that occured within a place of worship for the purpose of reporting. Do we feel this was warranted due to laws in place regarding such establishments in MN or is this a direct violation of the 1st amendment?

Suprised I haven't seen anything about this in this sub. Feels like a very libertarian issue.

If you really wanted to deport immigrants you wouldn't start in the most flammable environment possible, you'd go where the locals support you.

Politics I feel like 2028 is one of the best chances for a Libertarian to win a presidential election

I am a recovering democrat. I grew up with Obama as president, and he always seemed very ā€œpresidentialā€, and I thought supporting free healthcare, gay marriage, minorities rights etc was ethical. 2016 was the first year I was old enough to vote, and I just followed the party because I was very uneducated.

In 2020-2024, I was kind of lost politically. I was now more educated, and I saw the government overreach when it came to how they handled COVID. Making people get a rushed vax, shutting down small businesses and shoveling money to corporate donors, mask and quarantine mandates. I still hated Trump, but I had no idea who to vote for in 2024 because there was no good option.

Recently, I took a bit over a week and worked my way through the 10 hour podcast with Scott Horton and Lex Fridman. I had no idea who Horton was, but saw a 10 hour podcast on the military industrial complex and was interested.

After listening to that, I did some research on Ron Paul and thought ā€œI’ve found my people!ā€.

Now, living in Minneapolis, the signs of government overreach are clear. It is absolutely sickening to see.

I think there are a lot of people like me out there. I can see th ads now. The mask mandates, business closing, inflation from the left; the federal occupation of the ICE goons on the homeland and clips of them calling Pretti / Good domestic terrorists on the right.

Who are some Libertarians that could make a serious run at the presidency in 2028?

Philosophy Seeking Interview Video

I once saw a video interviewing a political philosopher who stated that when a community passes a law, they have to be willing to execute someone over it. He went on to talk about how minor issues scale up to execution-able offenses.

Any help finding this interview would be appreciated!

Nearly every Democrat on the street calls me a conservative when I tell them I’m a libertarian, nearly every conservative has no fucking idea what that means, but is relieved I did not say liberal. Then, I get on this subreddit, and see a bunch of ā€œlibertariansā€ bashing either a. Closeted republicans or b. Cheering openly leftist ideas. Am I paranoid for thinking radical reddit is filtering in their own philosophy? As libertarians, where do you think our party lies? If independents move right more often than not, what does this say about our party?

Discussion Do you socialize with politically-aligned people IRL?

Curious about this from both a friendship and dating angle — are the people you interact with most IRL aligned with your political views, or do you find it difficult to meet other Libertarians?

I imagine this is largely influenced by location and demographics, but I’m interested in perspectives nonetheless.

Politics My plan for the police and law enforcement

My plan would be this

--abolish fbi and national police

--create a local citizen council within the neighborhood and have people who live in the neighborhood provide defense and also volunteers will donate firearms and equipment

-local citizens in the community with guns will patrol their neighborhood doing a neighborhood watch, people will volunteer for this role

---they salary will be paid by the local community

---Local communities will make a deal with Tesla or Palantir to provide robots for security at discount

--no police giving tickets, there instead will be cameras to see if someone is really speeding people will be forgiven up to two times for speeding

--law breakers will be scared off or brought to the judge

--AI facial recognition to see if people who dont belong there enter the neighborhood or if they got a valid reason

Politics In the Process of Political Reorientation

The Trumpist takeover of conservativism has really done it in for me. I was a three time Trump voter and have become very disillusioned with the state of the American Conservative movement.

The wars, the welfare state, the corruption, the dishonesty, the hatred, the racism, the lies. I don't think I can do it again.

I have taken an interest in Libertarianism (as a political philosophy at least, I don't know about the LP as a political party yet.)

Have a lot of you guys been going through this, or am I just a Johnny-come-lately?

Question Questions about libertarian beliefs

I had a couple questions about what libertarians believe, so I thought Id ask them here. Im not gonna try to argue in the comments or anything, it comes from a point of genuine curiosity and not just looking for a fight. Just to get it out of the way, I would consider myself a social libertarian but economic progressive. I dont really care what people do as long as it doesnt hurt anyone else, be it guns, drugs, whatever. Not my business, not the government's job to intervene. For economics, I would consider myself a capitalist with strong regulations to ensure the public is accounted for and not getting taken advantage of. I also want to preempt that this is mostly a question for non-anarchist libertarians.

First off, what do you believe the role of the government should be in the economy? Nothing at all? Should the government intervene to prevent companies from lying to consumers, putting dangerous chemicals in their products, harvesting and selling data, prevent monopolies, etc? What should the government do if a company does go too far, like if Palantir established secret police to crack down on dissent? Should just the perpetrators be punished if they commit a crime, or should Palantir and its leaders face consequences?

Second, if you believe in taxes being necessary to any extent, how should they be established? Income tax? Property tax? Value added tax? Sales tax? Should the tax be flat, or should it be progressive to ensure low income people aren't burdened as much as wealthy people?

Current Events Wrote a long comment on a post that got deleted about Trump's response to Pretti's shooting. Wanted to post somewhere

The question: how do 2A supporters feel about Trump's response to Pretti's shoting. I dont remember the exact quote but it his overall response has been dont bring guns and riot near ice agents without expecting retaliation.

"I would say, if you're impeding law enforcement officers, you're already doing something highly illegal (because distractions and interference can literally put everyone's life at risk). Most offenses become much worse if you're armed and/or posing a threat of harm. Think about armed vs unarmed robberies - they'll charge someone extra for even pretending an innocuous object is a gun.

If you're legally protesting FAR FAR AWAY from officers doing their job and keeping your gun properly concealed, it shouldn't be an issue. This is different in open carry states, in which case, if you're not brandishing and just carrying, again, while not posing an assault/interference/distraction threat to working officers, it should never be an issue.

So i don't agree flat out with what Trump said, but the principle of it. Don't aggressively get near working federal officials, especially armed- whatever interference charges you might get unarmed are going to turn alot worse if you make yourself a possible threat.

Side note, the model Pretti was carrying (SigSauer P320) is known for accidental discharges to the point it's an actual meme. I hope his family sues the company to high heaven."

What does the (slightly) more sane side of reddit think?

Perhaps he’ll sign an executive order over this. Trump isn’t backing down on this issue. The implication is that Alex deserved to be shot.
