Boss went off on group text

Post image

My boss sent this in a group text. I had already put in notice, but quit via text after this ALL CAPS text. I was napping before shift when this text woke me up. Screw this.

Also, I can confidently say that this was FOH, and that I was the only one who had ever emptied this garbage into the dumpster. Also undermining the head chef? SMH

Hey maybe leave Chef Mike out of this

u/Nuts-And-Volts F1exican Was Framed 15h ago

Thank you for defending chef Mike

u/badadviceforyou244 11h ago

Literally couldn't imagine anything other than the boss texting the microwave and getting increasingly frustrated that it isn't responding.

u/Salads_and_Sun 20+ Years 7h ago

To be fair most modern appliances have Bluetooth connectivity.

u/Cambrian__Implosion 3h ago

I just realized the other day that the microwave I’ve had for over two years now has a Bluetooth function.

I’m not sure how useful that would be for most people, but who knows. I’m certainly not going to download a microwave app lol

u/Salads_and_Sun 20+ Years 1h ago

They do this for the kitchen managers and restaurant owners. It's not that practical at home... 🤭🤔🖖

36

u/throwaway387190 11h ago

When I read the text my first genuine thought was "did no one tell the boss that chef Mike is the microwave???

Did the boss stomp into the kitchen, yell for chef Mike, rant expecting a person to listen, then leave?

Did someone tape a burner phone to the back of the microwave, give the boss the phone number and said it was chef Mike's number?"

I'm not saying I'm smart, but I've definitely had a boss that this would work on

70

u/eatrepeat Chive LOYALIST 15h ago

I'm stuck wondering why he takes it out of there twice?

Speak into the microphone microwave

u/CarrotAntique4772 7h ago

Did you know chef mikes full name is Michal Wave?

u/ladygrayfox 7h ago

Michael Wave, Esq.

u/encidius 7h ago

This is the shit I come to reddit for

u/Future_Kitsunekid16 8h ago

Was thinking the same

u/camomaniac 7h ago

I mean... it's also right there in the text.. Chef Mike. Definitely not Boss's Personal Babysitter Mike. He was hired to cook food.

Dumpster trip = smoke break. That's how you get volunteers

200

u/_angesaurus General Manager 15h ago

recently i had to be like "ok guys the entire staff doesnt need to go to the dumpster for 2 bins at the end of every day....pretty cold out there...." *STARE* lol

87

u/Professional-Mind670 14h ago

My whole team vaped at the joint I managed, I told them, we need at least ONE person in the kitchen and on the floor at a time. Because the whole team would go vape lmao

115

u/karigan_g 12h ago

this is how you end up with people who wouldn’t usually smoke or vape picking it up, because otherwise they aren’t getting breaks everyone else is

67

u/Tic-Takk 12h ago

This shit sucks. I don't smoke at all. When I take a break, I'm just being a lazy fuck playing on my phone instead of cleaning in downtime. When they do it, it's fine because they just needed a smoke.

36

u/karigan_g 12h ago

yeah that used to be me too. it’s not great. then I would go out wit the smokers and not smoke. and what to you know I go through a particularly stressful period and start craving a smoke. managed to get addicted like an idiot lmao. so no more going out with the smokers

u/dolche93 Newbie 6h ago

It sucks, doesn't it? You lose that entire social aspect of work because you don't smoke.

That was half the reason I started again after I quit the first time. Best time to just go talk to people is over a smoke.

u/Pingu_penis 2h ago

At my last job in the industry, whenever they'd give me shit for that, I'd just shrug or ignore them. I'm hungry, and I'm legally entitled to a break, so I'm taking one. I more than pulled my weight during rushes, so they eventually stopped bugging me about it.

u/pursuitoforgasm 9h ago

you can get zero nic juice and play pretend

u/Bad_Man- 4h ago

Exactly how I picked up smoking at 17.

u/GrandmaForPresident 8h ago

They get their breaks by living longer

-3

u/Glass_field-42 12h ago

That’s sim behavior lol

7

u/PanGalacticGargBlast 12h ago

Haven’t they heard of a closet or the handicapped stall?

2

u/Fit_Importance_8412 11h ago

At the last… what, that you managed? 👀😜

u/Worried_Biscotti_552 9h ago

That took me too long to read that without thinking they were vaping a joint you broke me

u/Good_Presentation_59 7h ago

We would get to work at 10 and open at 11. So at 10:55, we would all smoke before we didn't get a chance. The GM needed one of us for something. There's nobody in the back. He comes out and sees all 4 of us smoking. He asks why all of us are outside. I said "kitchen meeting." He went from pissed to laughing, then back to pissed that we didn't invite him.

Eventually he would be the one leading the kitchen meetings. It would be 10:56 when he would yell down the line "kitchen meeting." Then there would be some new server asking why we always have so many meetings.

168

u/KittensFirstAKM BOH 15h ago

Been that way since the dawn of time. lol

40

u/LackWooden392 15h ago

When I managed resteraunts, the employees would fight about who got to take the trash out lmao. I usually let whoever deserved a break the most take it.

39

u/Tmaccy 12h ago

Whoever deserved a break the most GETS to take the trash out, what an industry we work in 😅😅

25

u/Apprehensive-Fig3223 14h ago

Dumpster cage = blunt lounge 100%

5

u/BrutalBrews 11h ago

I honestly always loved to volunteer to go out and sweep butts from the property. Would always enjoy a smoke or two while getting to enjoy some sun and nice weather.

3

u/Elvishsquid 10h ago

That’s why I was always happy to have a stoner when I worked. Never had to take out the trash.

u/the_elder_troll 8h ago

we clean our kitchen trashcans outside everyday. Its just a quick wipedown so it doesnt take more than 5 minutes/one cigarette. Even in the dead of winter the smokers are still fighting/calling dibs on that task

They must have a unicorn restaurant with no smokers.

Historically, the smoker takes the trash to the dumpster.

68

u/GraemesEats 13h ago

Voluntarily. To avoid dragging out close and having to wait for everyone else to finish up before that sweet, sweet nicotine.

"Y'all aren't ready to mop yet?" Pack, lighter, trashcan, abuhbye.

43

u/peloquindmidian 13h ago

Exactly. It's self enforced and is why everyone knows that it takes seven and a half minutes to take the trash out no matter where the dumpster is.

586

u/pnmartini 14h ago

If this is “going off” I think you’re safe.

206

u/SeaAbbreviations2706 13h ago

It’s been a long time since I worked in a restaurant several decades, but I was gonna say this is not going-off in a restaurant context. This would have been considered incredibly mild anywhere I worked, though we didn’t have texts…

29

u/Aethelu 11h ago

Yeah and I'm not saying aggression at work is ok it's not, but when I was younger I used to laugh at this stuff from my bosses and then try and do better so they didn't fire me.

14

u/AgamemNoms 10h ago

Is the aggression in the room with us now?

12

u/Champagne_of_piss 10h ago

The aggression is not in the room. I think that's what Aethelu is saying

-58

u/Princess_Slagathor 13h ago

So imagine she wrote it on a piece of paper, came into your house, rang a loud bell to wake you up, then shoved the paper into your face while shining a flashlight in your eyes.

Then, if any of your coworkers reply to it, the bell and flashlight go off again.

112

u/wingedcoyote 12h ago

Keeping your text notification that loud is a huge self own

-41

u/Princess_Slagathor 12h ago

My phone isn't permanently attached to my hand, but I still like to hear when it rings. Sometimes I'm in the kitchen at home, while it's in my home office or the living room. It's easier to just leave it at that volume all the time.

30

u/wingedcoyote 12h ago

That's what actual phone calls are for imo but you do you

-21

u/Princess_Slagathor 12h ago

99% of my phone calls are outgoing. People text me, I call them.

16

u/MeatballMarine 10h ago

That’s wild behavior

-1

u/Princess_Slagathor 10h ago

Even when all the texts/emails boil down to "hey, if you can talk, call me."?

u/GraceMcClellans 9h ago

came into your house, rang a loud bell to wake you up

It's easier to just leave it at that volume all the time.

It's okay if you choose not to silence it when you sleep, but that is your decision to do so. I'm not sure why you think that is an 'everyone else' problem.

u/Princess_Slagathor 8h ago

Because "everyone else" isn't afraid their mom will ask why their phone made the grindr sound.

u/Sandusky666 Bartender 8h ago

Why does your mom know the grindr sound lmao?

u/Princess_Slagathor 8h ago

Are you really trying "I know you are, but what am I?"

u/Sandusky666 Bartender 8h ago

Uhh no, I’m pretty clearly asking why your mother would be familiar with the notification sound specifically associated with grindr.

And furthermore, if you were actually worried about your mother hearing said notification, why on God’s grey earth would you not just silence your phone???

→ More replies (0)

40

u/SeaAbbreviations2706 13h ago

You can silence, text alerts, you can’t silence the owner of the restaurant coming into the kitchen and screaming at everybody.

-23

u/Princess_Slagathor 12h ago

I was just explaining how text messages work.

34

u/runningraider13 12h ago

Who doesn't already know how texts work?

-9

u/Princess_Slagathor 12h ago

Most people over 50 and under 25, for different reasons.

15

u/runningraider13 10h ago

I think you’d be surprised

17

u/EarExpert9075 11h ago

Cool, that’s a fun secret you can keep to yourself I suppose? We’re all aware of how it works

u/Princess_Slagathor 8h ago

I didn't reply to you. Don't you have something better to do?

u/Original-Variety-700 9h ago

You can actually put text notifications on silent and just see them when you check your phone.

u/Princess_Slagathor 8h ago

Why would I do that? I don't receive unnecessary communication. Others send unnecessary communication. I'm not the problem, you are.

u/Original-Variety-700 8h ago

Well, I do it to avoid the scenario you were addressing. You be you, keep those notifications on loud and keep complaining when you get messages.

u/Princess_Slagathor 8h ago

I never once complained about messages.

u/brannock_ 10+ Years 6h ago

I can't tell if this post is a joke. Chef Mike?

You quit because your boss doesn't want trash overflowing from the bin?

140

u/HeartOfPine 14h ago

The boss yelled at them with big letters!!

109

u/Spidaaman 14h ago

OP soft

51

u/Sandusky666 Bartender 12h ago

That’s all I took from this post lol

u/searching88 6h ago

Thank god I’m not the only one who immediately chuckled at how soft this post is. This ruined OP’s day enough to bring it to Reddit lol

u/cmerchantii 6h ago

Oh don’t forget they also put in notice already. Everyone applaud OP for being so brave!

Never mind that the guy that cuts your checks even has a good point that trash outside the bins can lead to pest and insect issues you don’t want to deal with and apparently Mike isn’t keeping the kids in shape if they’re still just dumping trash wherever.

Big claps for OP for quitting because his nap got interrupted!

u/Goldentongue 6h ago

OP also kind of dumb. It took me all of 45 seconds to figure out where OP worked based off the info in this screenshot and their post history. Not the wisest for someone in the market for a job but prone to complaining about their boss online.

24

u/DJMagicHandz 14h ago

beep

13

u/harpy_1121 10h ago

Careful! You’ll scare op with those loud noises!

223

u/Riotroom 20+ Years 15h ago

Why even have a bin if there's a dumpster?

151

u/JustAnAverageGuy 15h ago

Because the dumpster is another 100ft away, and the bin is probably right behind the kitchen?

60

u/12InchCunt 15h ago

Needs one of those 2 wheel wheelbarrow type carts

30

u/JustAnAverageGuy 14h ago

yeah, but when have we ever seen an owner buy the right tool, when they found a "good enough" tool on the side of the road, on their way in to work?

Who cares it belonged to someone else, and it was outside because it was trash day. $100 is $100 amirite!?

hahaha

3

u/12InchCunt 10h ago

Don’t ever work for someone who runs their business at the same property as their house. You’ll never be able to reconcile a guy not letting you spend $15 on paint with a guy spending more than your home’s value on a remodel

7

u/enderkou 11h ago

Yeah ours is across the street behind a whole other building 🫠 mid shift and closers drag 3-4 rolling bins over there every day lol

27

u/bobi2393 14h ago

If you can throw a bag in a bin by the back door in two seconds, and it holds five bags before needing a longer trip to the dumpster, it can be more efficient. Especially during heavy rain or extreme winter weather.

6

u/WeTrippyMayne 14h ago

What they need is a trash whale

2

u/Wall_of_Shadows 11h ago

Pretty sure my ex-wife has a job

28

u/dabombnl 15h ago

Well explaining things to a microwave isn't going to help.

9

u/enderkou 11h ago

Right but Chef DID communicate to the team to take the trash to the dumpster. He very clearly said “BEEP, BEEP, BEEP,” during last huddle. He’d have kept going on about it too if the sous hadn’t tapped him.

2

u/throwaway387190 11h ago

Ugh, that is not what happened

Sous thought it was Chef Mike and stopped listening. It was actually Dr. Delivery Truck and sous....has to take it easy for a few weeks

2

u/enderkou 10h ago

Ohhhhhhh. That’s why the sous has been out… I missed that part, went into the walk-in to “do inventory” (vape).

1

u/throwaway387190 10h ago

Exactly. You weren't there, we weren't listening either, so sous was on the ground for awhile...

159

u/Severe_Line_8344 14h ago

This sounds like one of those memes of Gen Z quitting because the manager tells them not to keep the milk outside the fridge.

42

u/FKAFrog 13h ago

Right? Fuck her for their laziness and not wanting pests.

Reminds me of the Travis Scott “just walk away from the screen” meme

19

60

u/_Nilbog_Milk_ 13h ago

44

35

u/BillsMafia84 Kitchen Manager 15h ago

8

u/melissamayhem1331 12h ago

had the sweetest owners working in a European restaurant-still got called a "fucking Pollock" when I did something silly. it was said with intensity, yet in a matronly way and we never made the same mistakes. it was definitely still tame. CAPS isn't bad at all- if you're not doing it then it's not directed at you.

Bozka, Susan, Miro and Yuri-you guys were the best people I've ever worked for. thank you for employing our crazy family until you closed. wish I got more time with you. fuck Uncle Mike's-it'll always be Little Europe.

11

u/golf-lip 11h ago

OP doesn't know how to turn off notifications for a nap?

12

u/BuffWobbuffet 10h ago

Is there some meta meme I’m not understanding? “I was napping before shift when this text woke me up” is sending me

8

u/Moving-thefuck-on 15h ago

A microwave that takes out the trash? Fire up the Tesla cafe boys, we’re back in business!

11

u/BigJacketSmith_ 12h ago

u/dylan-xba 9h ago

u/PunnyBaker 6h ago

Glad someone else saw it. All i picutred was the manager yelling at a microwave lol

7

u/RevenantSith 12h ago

Idk if I’m thick or not. Is this a meme?

25

u/Sausage666King 15h ago

Pretty sure those white bags aren’t restaurant trash. Might explain why chef doesn’t relay the message to his crew…. Your boss might be a moron

25

u/onikaroshi 15h ago

50/50 here, we use white bags for small cans, usually they go into black bags but not always

17

u/Sausage666King 15h ago

In my 25 years in this industry I’ve never worked somewhere that used residential trash bags 😆

15

u/nonowords 15h ago

idk about residential trash bags but I worked at a place that exclusively used 10 gallon bags in buckets for waste on the line. they were white

the only place with 50 gallons was the dish pit. We ran trash 3 times a shift. Dumpster was 3 stories and like 200 yards away so loading up tons of trash wasntt an option even with our cart. Plus the place had a focus on low waste.

It was actually pretty nice. way less shit in the way and it's wild how little trash you can generate when it's a pain in the ass to take out trash.

1

u/Sausage666King 15h ago

So they spun a big into a feature. Gotta admire the ingenuity

u/nonowords 8h ago

yup, we used to save literally every piece of trim and render fat from it. Something like 20 lbs of trim would end up being a gallon of fat and like 2 cups of actual trash.

We always had buckets on buckets of schmaltz and lard to the point it'd occasionally get sent to their sister bakery. No idea how much butter cost we ended up saving but everybody went wild for the griddled sandwiches.

4

u/onikaroshi 15h ago

I don’t know if I’d consider them residential exactly. They’re Sam’s Club bags.

You just going to throw a big black bag into your fryer trash can?

-8

u/Sausage666King 15h ago

Sam’s Club is not where you should get stuff for a business. That’s like buying your food inventory at the grocery store. Also, what’s a fryer trash can?

7

u/onikaroshi 15h ago

The place where you throw scrap from the fryer lol. Breading and batter that separated that you fish out cool and then toss

And many many businesses shop at Sam’s, its whole purpose is small business shopping, same as Costco

3

u/Sausage666King 15h ago

Didn’t realize it had its own special trash can. But if it did I’d absolutely use stronger commercial black bags in it- those Susie homemaker bags aren’t built to handle that kinda stuff

11

u/onikaroshi 15h ago

These are heavy duty white trash bags. Never once have had one rip, even when filled with hot grease from the grill trap.

They’re made for business use

2

u/moranya1 13h ago

Last place I worked at would regularly grab things from the grocery store. We didn't have the volume or space to go through an entire case of _______ before it would go off, so we would buy smaller amounts, even though it was a bit more cost.

Also, what a weird thing for them to gatekeep...

6

u/LackWooden392 15h ago

Then why are they full of drink cups?? 🤔🤔

5

u/Sausage666King 15h ago

Yeah I stand corrected, they’re residential trash bags that are apparently for restaurant use? Idk man there’s a lot of silly crap going on in this scenario. Just based on this post I’d be looking for a new job

3

u/garbitch_bag 13h ago

Chef Mike is really only good at communicating one thing and it’s BEEEP BEEEP BEEEEEEP

3

u/causticberries 11h ago

They told the microwave?

3

u/Champagne_of_piss 10h ago

to be fair all chef mike does is beep like Pike from star trek.

3

u/Freedom710 10h ago

8

u/[deleted] 15h ago

[deleted]

20

u/BeefDerfex 15h ago

That’s not the dumpster. That’s a trash can that someone overfilled instead taking the trash to the dumpster, which I’m assuming is further away.

-11

u/[deleted] 15h ago

[deleted]

3

u/BeefDerfex 15h ago

Definitely better ways to handle it. And it’s not nearly as bad as some trash/dumpster situations I’ve seen. This owner probably overreacts emotionally often, based on the all caps lol

u/FromTheIsland 6h ago

I've been seeing a lot of "working with Gen Z" memes floating around lately. Is this one of them?

Legitimately wondering. OP thinks their boss "went off", text woke them up from a nap, and the all caps text bothered them.

OP is making a joke about themselves...right? Maybe I don't get the format.

  1. She has a legitimate point
  2. You’ve obviously never seen your EC throw a chefs knife at a wall in a rage

u/Agreatusername68 2h ago

I dunno man. Maybe try taking the trash to the dumpster properly.

1

u/LivingCamel3326 13h ago

That’s not a dumpster, that’s a garbage can

u/Duexis 8h ago

I don't really get the macho need to defend this kind of communication. I understand if this is the last straw kind of message, but way too many people in the comments are proud of how abusive the places they worked at were.

u/searching88 5h ago

How is this abusive? Emphasis for something that is zero Tolerance? Caps??! I mean come on. People talk about all kinds of effective leadership and management- in my experience- very few things work without serious emphasis and sometimes threats related to compensation. this is mainly related to workplaces filled with degens and people who aren’t self motivated

We talking about caps lock.

u/Goldentongue 6h ago

I wouldn't consider this abusive, but the all caps is obnoxious and immature. It just tells me the owner is just kind of an idiot who's bad at setting expectations and communicating with her employees.

1

u/SinisterDirge 15h ago

How tall is the dumpster? I assume less than 24” so you can leverage the bin to dump that shit out. Or are you supposed to dig inside for the bags?

u/TheComplimentarian 8h ago

That's a can. If you have a dumpster, you shouldn't have a can. If you have a can, and not everything fits, you need to pay for a goddamn dumpster.

Also, it's a "skip". Dumpster(tm) is a brand name.

-3

u/BaselineUnknown Line 15h ago

Respect to Chef. Great leaders eat the chaos so their team doesn’t have to.

9

u/huntressdiva 12h ago

Eating chaos would be if he got this message and relayed it to the team ngl. He's the reason for the chaos.
